John Currie of K State Hired as AD

"Prolonged" is where you tumbled out of the boxcar. :) 24,21 and 20 wins in the Big 10? In the Southern Conference that lands you the VCU job.

21 wins got them to the NIT. Yes, going from 37-2 to spending six straight years on the NCAA/NIT borderline or worse is a pretty obvious downward trend.

Either way, there were a lot of people, myself included, who thought the Weber hire was a massive downgrade and wouldn't work out, and that's exactly what happened. So if you want to act now like 1) this was a surprising and unexpected outcome or 2) Currie had no other choice, I'm not buying it. Let's just call a bad hire what it is. Hopefully he learned from it.

I was a DW fan and still am, but I see no reason to bury the guy who wound up with the job. I mean, Currie didn't take the job in order to piss some of you guys off. He left a P5 school of decent reputation to take our job, whereas in recent years we've had similar situations come to naught when candidates said no thanks. And when you consider how our men finished 12th in the SEC all-sports race last year... heck, I hope he hits the ground running. Go get'em. Your my guy until your not.. ..

You must still be hung up on Wade or something, because you seem to be missing the point that Brad Underwood was an assistant within the program when Currie hired Weber instead.

This all started with your "Currie hired everybody wrong while Blackburn hired everybody right" narrative. Wade is one one side of that so I need to keep you focused. :)
Doesn't seem that Martin's poor man's Bobby Knight act did his valued assistants any favors. Shame for Underwood, whom I'm a big fan of. Would've loved him for Tennessee when we hired Barnes.

It is no secret that my name was mentioned as a possible candidate, but I didnt interview w/ the new chancellor or the committee - Blackburn

This is why I can't get behind this hire. Giving all the candidates an interview and not choosing them is one thing but snubbing them is bs.

So, even if he ends up being a good hire the process made you not accept it?

Quote where I posted "Currie had no other choice". It's revisionist genius second guessers trying to roost that begs my response. I'm glad that you have all this extra time to gather with others with said extra time to ponder another program in Kansas's chances of success with a hire. Have a nephew and his brother's wife as Illini grads, and they haven't built up this conviction for Weber. Remember them appreciating his work in Champaign and thinking that he'd do well in Manahattan...barely a part of idle chitchat. :)

FEATURED The inside story: Complex picture in Tennessee’s hiring of John Currie
By Jimmy Hyams

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — As rumors fly as to what did or didn’t happen during the Tennessee athletic director’s search, here are a couple of things we have been told.

* Tennessee’s AD search committee did interview John Currie, though not all members of committee were there.

* New UT chancellor Beverly Davenport also interviewed Currie, flying to Kansas to do so.

* Phillip Fulmer moved his scheduled search committee interview from this Friday to this past Sunday.

* Fulmer got a call from a search committee member Monday morning, leading Fulmer to believe he had the job.

* Davenport didn’t want Fulmer because he didn’t have AD experience; she wanted someone with experience from a Power Five Conference.

* The search committee member that pushed for Currie was Jimmy Haslam.

* The search committee recommended Currie to Davenport, although the vote was not unanimous.

* Not all members of the search committee were aware that Currie was instrumental in having Fulmer fired in 2008 and didn’t know Currie and Fulmer have a strained relationship.

* Currie reached out to Fulmer through a phone message but Fulmer has not yet responded.

* One reason Fulmer pushed for the AD job is he didn’t want Currie to get it.

* Fulmer might have been the only candidate interviewed by both the search firm, Turnkey, and the UT search committee. UT Chattanooga AD David Blackburn interviewed with Turnkey the same day as Fulmer but wasn’t interviewed by the UT search committee.

While Currie’s hiring has been praised by some, mostly on the national scene, many closer to UT object to the hiring. Currie had a tenuous relationship with some UT coaches and boosters when he was an assistant athletic director at Tennessee.

Blackburn made his program better and Currie's main hire was a bad one. That doesn't mean I think Wade should be at K-State.

Currie could have gambled too, but went with the "safe" guy. That can work, but if you look up and the safe guy is Bruce Weber, you should be willing to adapt your strategy.

Meh. I probably said it on here at the time. Weber is in the Paul Hewitt/Larry Coker category. He can put your job in jeopardy even if he seems safe

So, there was Turnkey, the UT Search Committee, and Davenport conducting interviews. Not all members of both committees were present at all interviews. Davenport goes rogue and flies to Kansas to interview Currie on her own. Also, nobody flushed out Currie's tenuous relationships with former UT and Kansas St. coaches/boosters in the interview process.

What a freaking clusterf#$%

I cringe everytime I read "she wanted someone with P5 experience" or "he has P5 experience." Is Kansas State a p5 school, yes but it's Kansas State.

As for the article, it's the definition of two monkeys _______ a football.

I'd bet a Rooster and a Chili Cheese Dog from the ol' Smokey Mtn Market that Fulmer was never seriously considered.

Chili Cheese Dog from Smokey Mtn Market??? Man, what a walk down memory lane that is. Some of the very best late-night food in Knoxville back in the early to mid-60's. Many thanks, Volador.

Yep. It stinks. Seems like a bad way to handle it.

Currie could have gambled too, but went with the "safe" guy. That can work, but if you look up and the safe guy is Bruce Weber, you should be willing to adapt your strategy.

All successful AD's make good and bad hires. Part of BECOMING a successful AD. Dickey hired Fulmer after hiring Wade Houston. He then made a string of mediocre to bad basketball hires. Currie has had a little more time than Blackburn but on a bigger stage. He hired a candidate with a proven track record and wasn't afforded the gift of revisionist backtracking that we fans enjoy. For every gamble on an unproven assistant that becomes a coaching superstar you have several tales of passing on a proven HC that has forgotten more about coaching than a new hire will ever learn...delicate balance and I just don't see a bad process in his data justifying the Weber hire.

Too bad you're irrelevant...like me. :)

It is concerning that the search committee did not even interview Blackburn? It seems like they would have at least done so themselves if they were seriously ever considering or advocating for him.
