Dear Donald

Obama had a profoundly negative impact on race relations and anyone arguing otherwise is ignoring the objective evidence to the contrary.

To no one's surprise, I think Obama did a fantastic job in advancing race relations. The problem is that he advanced them more and at a faster rate than some people could tolerate. Obama took the nation 3 steps forward and Trump has taken the nation one step back (and counting). The end result will be what the nation as a whole is able to process. Some people just have to move more slowly than others.

This post of yours is totally laughable to bring tears to somebody's eyes. You must take that "man cave" thing way too seriously. This post sounds like you've been living in a cave or under a rock for the last 15 years without TV radio or the internet because you are completely wrong thinking that Obama did a fantastic job w/race relations. That's about as dumb as a Maxine Waters statement on anything coming from her brain.

That would be me....I'm arguing otherwise. One man's positive impact is another man's negative...I guess. I remember a lot of people arguing that desegregation had a negative impact, probably a few on here still believe that.

Well said.

Next you'll bring up slavery instead of defending O's ridiculous responses.

lol, what? u can't be serious.

Something like 60% of blacks hate whites.
Everybody hates everybody now. Part of it is due to 24 hour news coverage, talk radio, internet forums, etc. Part of it is identity politics, which divides us along racial, gender, sexual orientation, educational, and financial lines, etc.

Unfortunately, there's a lot of truth to your statement...and I'm as guilty as the next in getting caught up in the nonsense.

On what planet? I guess technology was also better, cheaper, and faster in the 70's.

no, it wasn't but I do think relations among various different folks was better. When folks of different races, creeds, religions, etc. stopped working shoulder to shoulder at middle income jobs it began to slowly worsen and has gotten to the point it is today. I think Pres Obama had something to do w/ the decline over the past 8 years, and definitely didn't try to help by actions or words, but there is blame to go around as well.

Case in point: is there racism in the US military, sure is...you can't ever stamp it completely out, but don't think its at the same level as the rest of society. There is a distinct level of respect, reliance and tolerance within the ranks - mostly due to shared burden and daily interaction.

I think the small minority that would agree would be almost exclusively white. Just guessing here, but I would bet any minority person over the age of 50 would say things are better now and Obama helped the process. (White people and minorities may have a tad bit of a different perspective on the issue)

The African Americans I speak to would disagree with you on preset race relations.

Why would only blacks get a vote?

As of July 2016, NYTimes says views on race relations are about as bad as they've been since Rodney King riots.

Ask them which they believe will be better, Obama or Trump. I know how my circle feels.

I think the Trump effect was in full force by July 2016.

As of Aug 6, 2015, whites and blacks both had the poorest view of race relations of the previous 15 years.

In July 2015, NYTimes reported that, after an initial bump for us electing a black president, views on race relations by both whites and blacks deteriorated by 2015.

July 23, 2015, CBS reported the same thing, adding that blacks are more likely than whites to report a deteriorating view of race relations in Obama's presidency.

June, '15 WP reported that both whites and blacks had moved concerns of race relations up to the nations number one problem. Thanks Trump!

In 2014, Obama admitted the poor view on Race relations, but said people were wrong to think race relations were poor... you know... because actual racial flare-ups tricked people into thinking race relations were bad.

Thanks Trump!

A 2015 poll found something incredibly interesting about Obamaa's tenure as President.

The poll found something very interesting about how Americans feel about race relations on macro and micro levels. While nearly 80% of whites and Blacks believe that race relations in the United States are either getting worse or staying the same, the vast majority of whites and Blacks believe that race relations in their own communities are generally good.

In other words, even though people generally experienced good race relations in their daily lives and immediate communities, the overarching narrative was that things were really bad. I would tend to agree with Luther that the only explanation would be Trump's race baiting. In 2015. Correct?

So... The polls have spoken and perception of race relations under Obama seem to have gotten an initial bump when America elected our first black president, but they quickly began to fall to 15 year lows under his leadership. More damning, I think, is that one poll painted the picture of actual good overall race relations, but nonetheless a divisive narrative under his leadership.

Feel free to stay within the safety of your own closed mind. - Just kidding, that's just a cop out comment used when someone realizes they have no where to go.

I would just make two quick points.
1. Any time an issue is brought to the forefront and the public is forced to recognize and try to deal with the issue, it seems to temporarily get worse. (desegregation) Doing the right thing and progressing an issue in the correct direction often has short term conflicts. Again, I would love to see a poll asking black people if they felt if Obama or Trump is better for race relations.

2. I always said minorities, not blacks. You have taken Hispanics, Muslims, LBGT, and all others out of the equation. How do you think these groups would evaluate the relations under Obama compared to the relations under Trump? Obama was inclusive, Trump is exclusive. Your view will depend largely on which group you're in...coupled with your degree of open mindedness.

Luther, a couple of helpful hints... You're not as smooth and smart as you think you are, and most people on this forum aren't as dumb as you think we are.

You made a claim that has been shown historically and patently false. Blaming it on Trump does not somehow mean that Obama improved race relations. Trying to subtly make your claims immeasurable does not mean that Obama improved race relations. Claiming that changes cause "short-term conflicts" (short term apparently meaning 8 years/two terms) actually accidentally invalidated your claims.

Please, in the future, start having these debates and discussions in an intellectually honest way, as opposed to thinking that you're smart enough--and we're dumb enough--that you can keep moving goal posts in an effort to escape the reality that you're wrong.
