A gaffe? How is it a gaffe? What was he trying to say?

He didn't clarify anything so you don't know. You have to guess at what he's talking about. If it is true that he was basing it on a FN story, here is what I think happened:

He saw a fox story about problems in Sweden. He's old, he wasn't really paying attention, and his attention to detail isn't good in the first place nor does he care about actual facts (or anything other than his ego, really).

His old, half-working mind turns a fox news story about some things that have been happening into something that happened that day.

It's not a gaffe. It's a misunderstanding of the world around him. He really thought there was a big incident.

It wasn't a slip of the words. I don't know that it's a lie, but if it's not, it's not a slip up...he really thought there was an incident.

He's not saying "I slipped up". He's saying "there was a fox story".

This is maybe even more troubling than a lie? Most politicians lie, but not many are too stupid to digest a cable news report.

He can be reckless when he speaks, but I'm pretty sure he can distinguish between an interview and a terrorist attack. It was just a sloppy use of words.

Let me say overall you have convinced me that it may have been a gaffe, but I don't find this particular point very convincing...

If something indeed happened the night before, nobody would have found his wording strange. The correct English would have been "what's happening in Germany, what happened last night in Sweden", but in terms of commonly used language, people say "what's happening in Germany, what's happening last night in Sweden."

So I don't think you can determine from the context what he meant.

He's got this thing where he speaks as if he's sitting at a bar complaining about stuff. Really wish he'd use the teleprompter more and slow down, but he lives and dies with sound bites. It's good for campaigning, but not as good an idea as President.

Somebody has to get in his face and shut down the ranting and I'm not sure that person exists.
