Walt Wells Charged with DUI in 2016 (merged)

Based on the comments here I guess no one would want Jon Gruden to be named as UT's coach anymore as well. So now who can the Butch haters/Gruden lovers latch onto?

PS - If I have misunderstood the purpose or meaning of this thread, well I have had a few beers after a very long day, so disregard where needed. Cheers to all.

Boom.

Shouldn't have been able to keep his job imo. When you mentor and coach youth, you shouldn't be such a damned fool.

I'm sorry - I must have missed the details. How far over the legal limit was he? Did he fail a breathalyzer or was it a blood test? Or perhaps it was a substance other than alcohol? Why were the charges reduced?

A DUI is a major mistake. Thankfully, nobody (including himself) was hurt. Hopefully, whatever the circumstances, he learned a valuable lesson.

I'm glad the team I support believes in second chances. I'm glad they don't define a person by a single lapse in judgement.

well the "He refused a blood-alcohol test" part

doesn't that mean he is charged with a DUI ? not reduced to reckless driving ?

He accpeted a plea bargain down to reckless driving. Basicallt that means, im guilty, thanks for doing me a favor your honor.

It doesn't mean that he is accepting guilt for driving under the influence nor would I call it a 'favor' by the judge. That's a strange choice of words.

Yep. Unless I'm mistaken, the penalty for the implied consent violation (in addition to court costs and fees, probation, etc.) is automatic suspension of driver license for one year, but with a court order can get a restricted license to go to work, school, and church if they get the restricted license before their license is suspended for the year. Don't ask me how I know or which friend found this out for me.

Based on your theory we should have never hired Coach majors and Bear Bryant should have been fired at Alabama decades ago. Their alcohol issues were legend.

Well, that's what it is. Believe me, Bern in that business a long time.

I know Steve Oberman in Knoxville pretty well. He co-founded the National College of DUI defense. He is definitely one of the best DUI defense specialists in the country. I don't think he would ever refer to a plea agreement as a "favor" by the court.

Of course a lawyer wouldnt.

Nope. Some things are more important than football. Life for instance. Poor way to make your point. These men are responsible for shaping these young players. This is no way to do that. You step behind the wheel drunk, you show disregard for human life. Easy as that. 300k can buy you an Uber.

Pretty tacky to bring up something that happened a year ago. What real purpose did that serve other than to put a bad light on something that is way in the past. Leave it too some press, they never met a bad story they didn't like. GBO!!!!

So you are telling me a one year old dui arrest of a ga turned oline coach has more impact on recruiting than losses to sec bottomfeeders? Lol, yeah right.

Again did I say that strawman? You inserted the losses to South Carolina and Vanderbilt into the equation. Try staying on topic. Besides tell me what players we missed out on because of those 2 games?

The only purpose is to pull Wells down. No way is this anyone's idea of encouragement.

How he handles having to "own it", hopefully the worst thing he has ever done, will speak volumes towards his character. Right now it's a big question.

There is no defense for any DUI? If you aren't big enough to not drive, then you aren't big enough to drink.

I think what a lot of people are missing here is that he doesn't need a defense for a DUI. That's not what he was convicted of.

Sure he does. Get off DUI 101: Don't take their tests. Don't allow search(That includes their Police Dog's).

If I told you the rest you would drive around DUI without fear of consequence unless you have a crash. Then you're toast.

Get a DD, call a cab, catch a ride. Just don't drive DUI.

Most people would feel really bad if they hurt someone while being DUI. Do it for your own good, stop DUI.

No, he doesn't. He does not have a DUI on his criminal record. Plain and simple. Our system adjudicated his case on it's own individual merits and the District Attorney General's office chose not to pursue a conviction for a DUI.
