Walt Wells Charged with DUI in 2016 (merged)

This is also a shock piece where the tag line gets you and few people will actually read the article. He never was found guilty of DUI, only reckless driving. The article lists some incriminating statements, but I never saw a BAC or any other pertinent facts of the case. If you do not give a breathalyzer then you get charged with violation of implied consent and all the officer has to do is get a warrant for your blood. Heck most people cannot pass FSTs sober. I know the DAs in Knox County will not simply hand out reckless driving over a DUI. Also, I doubt they would show favoritism to a QC coach at Tennessee. After all they get paid based on how they prosecute DUI cases (federal highway funding).

I think it's pathetic they plaster this throughout the news again since it happened over a year ago. I am positive this is not a true reflection of Coach Wells' character and it probably was an embarrassing and stressful time in his life. There is no need to cause him more anxiety. I hate that the local news is trying to stir it up again and only put more bad press on Wells and the University. People make mistakes, I am not going to judge the guy on one incident. Lord knows I'm not perfect.

Why bring it up? I really don't blame Butch for not telling the news media in Knoxville anything. This happened over a year ago. If it happened a few days ago, it might be a story.

What makes you think he wasn't held accountable? It was said elsewhere that the charge was reduced and the DUI was dropped. It wasn't covered up either. The media is just looking for someway to take a big steaming deuce on anything positive for the football team.

Well the reason I think he wasn't held accountable is because if he was Joe Blow that worked at Walmart he's probably gonna be charged with a DUI and not get it dropped to a lesser charge. Also, most of you bozos, and I use bozos in the most loving sense, you would be pissing and moaning about Bama not holding people accountable if it was one of their coaches. Tell me I'm wrong.

I didn't realize it made press when it happened.

He was a joe blow a year ago.....also, you have no idea what his BAC was or any of those facts. They don't just drop DUIs to reckless driving.

Thats an interesting point as well. If the university didn't make this public, who let that cat out far enough that the university need to make a statement now?

Would it have been reported at the time if it was a starting linebacker? Why should a staff member be any different?

Good Lord to you, sir. You're letting a man's single mistake get your panties in a bunch.

This is a non issue. The worst that happens is reporters ask a couple of questions...oh no!!!!

It's not like we're getting a post season ban.

Odds are very much against this being "a man's single mistake". That would mean that the ONE time he had too much to drink and got behind the wheel of a car, he was pulled over. Not very likely.

It IS very likely, however, that the folks in charge have made sure there was a change in Mr Wells life as regards to drinking and driving.

Like I said elsewhere...I'm not interested in piling on Wells. The adminstration and program can't seem to get out of their own way however.

This is a non issue...to rational people. Obviously, though it is a big issue to the haters who latch onto anything negative so they can pile on,

Lane Kiffin wrecked a car while drunk with coeds with him. And left the car by the side of the road. It hasn't prevented him from getting a job.

Coaches are drew up humans just like the rest of us. Might want to think before casting those stones

I'm sure Knoxville PD does drop it for the Vols. If you don't think so you're delusional. You're right I don't know what his BAC was, but logic and using common sense tells me something was amiss otherwise he would have been charged with anything. You see I grew up in a family of alcoholics so I'm familiar with these types of instances.

You're wrong.
I never given a rat's ... what is on the driving record for any Bama (or any other team's) ga or ol coach. Oh, Wells was disciplined so your fos.

But here, let me be outraged. Grrrrrr!
Welp, I'm over it now. :)

Pretty good take. Hanging him in the downtown square is not needed. Anymore than pretending to know what he has done in the past or since then. Ive learned not to take the public perception of people (good or bad) too serious for that reason.

We didn't get wind of the Kiffin issue until much later as well. This is my point....Not to pile on, but to be consistent. It should have been reported, just like any incident that an athlete is involved in. The standard should be even higher for coaches...They get paid to represent the University.

I don't practice moral equivalence in any aspect of my life, I'm not going to start now.

So you hated Kiffin as well as Jones.

VFL you are not.

You may have it there Sherlock.:hi:

I would like to take credit, but after the VQ guys said that Mahoney was disgruntled and to expect the "anonymous coaches" stories from 247.

Now Jimmy gets the tip about the guy who took Mahoney's job.
I feel less like Sherlock and more like Homer Simpson. Even I could connect those dots lol.
