I've been in the camp that I don't think the 2017 team will be as bad as most think if we can find our quarterback early on. There's plenty of talent on this roster, which includes two top ten recruiting classes, to be in the hunt for Atlanta

Or the same depth that beat Florida and Georgia. The Vandy crap has to be corrected, though. There's absolutely no excuse for losing to those guys twice. That's the biggest black mark on Butch's resume, in my opinion.

Nor does your interpretation of past evidence predict the future. As they say on the brokerage commercials, past performance is not necessarily indicative of future results.

However, if you don't know where you've been, how do you know where you are going?
History does repeat itself in some cases.

I don't agree. I think in today's landscape there's plenty of room for two featured backs, unlike a position such as quarterback where it's typically all in on one guy.

Agree about the line.

Examples Ga and Bama

One good thing about last year is we went deep in the rotation. A lot of developing and experience. I expect that to pay off this season.

Thanks for joining the discourse, @Freak. Though I cannot cite facts to prove this, I do believe these past few pages included a greater semblance to reasoned debate than much of the FF to date in 2017. :hi:

7. Two highly rated QB's one with zero college playing time, and one with very little college playing time. I wouldn't consider trying to break either of them in a positive indicator for the 2017 season.

I don't think QB play will be an issue. Cases in point - how many seasons has Bama played in NC games with a first time starter?

How many first time starting QB's have gashed the Vols? The SC game comes to mind quickly, but there have been many others. Dormady and Guarantano have been on campus long enough to make me think we won't have a problem at QB.

Jalen Hurts, as a Freshman, was not the best QB that Alabama has fielded. However, if you take a young or subpar QB, and surround him with 5* upperclass, linemen, runningbacks, and receivers, you can compensate for many of his deficiencies, which Kiffin did.

We currently don't have that option, especially when it comes to offensive line, which will make or break your QB performance. If Josh Dobbs didn't have "spidey sense" level scrambling, it's Worley getting sacked every other play all over again.

This is the year we finally have depth and experience at both offensive and defensive lines. The linebackers have experience. As long as we can keep JJ off the wackie we have leadership in the receiving corps and they are STACKED. We have experience and a leader as well as talent in the QB situation. We have Kelly as a leader in the backs. Fellas, we are deep. The 2 deep doesn't have a lot of experience but at some point during this season they will become experienced.

You started this thread with this in your first post:

We are inexperienced at key positions.. true, but we are deep with inexperience. We can rotate inexperience all day long now.

How are we deep with inexperience, and experienced and stacked at the same time?

UT is "better" if the D turns the corner in year 2 with Shoop, the OC hire was much better than most expect, and the S&C program does a 180 in player development and injury prevention.

That... is a lot of ifs.... and it doesn't get UT to a level where they compete for championships. They need more elite players to do that.

Outside of Jennings... are you talking about when you say "stacked"? Byrd had 209 yds and is the only WR besides JJ returning with over 100 yds or more than 10 receptions on the year.... and that's before you consider that Byrd probably needs to be a CB both for the sake of the team and his future.

As to your last paragraph, I think there's legitimate debate to be had Freak as to whether or not team 120 improved from the previous season. I honestly thought we were an overall better, better coached and certainly a much more disciplined team in 2015 over 2016 despite the identical record. I think the trend of having his teams improve year to year was broken last season. Here's to hoping he starts a new one with team 121 this year.
It's a fair point KB and I don't disagree. We did have a record number of injuries, though. But either way, I don't think one season makes or breaks a trend.

And really my point wasn't about the trend. Rather I was trying to give an example that not every bit of evidence points to a 5-7 record next year, like some are suggesting. Butch has generally improved his teams from year to year, in previous stops and here at Tennessee.

Reasons for optimism do exist. A top five and top ten class on the roster -- that's another positive that folks could use to support optimism if they so chose.

And, one more thing I think it's important to say here. Lets all remind ourselves that Coach Jones didn't just pick these guys out of a hat o.k., he has been forming relationships with some of these kids since grade school. CJ is close with their families at this point. he KNOWS what he is getting himself into with these young men. Also, whoever does the scouting on these young men obviously knows what he's doing. He consistently picks out under recruited kids that turn out to be 5 star talent. he does it way above what he should be able to do. The guy is VERY good at it.
I think I picked the wrong thread to take a stance that reasons do exist for optimism. Folks might think I'm agreeing with you, when I'm pretty sure you're simply trolling at this point.

Yep. I've said before, and I absolutely believe we're not gonna be as bad as some think. I'm not saying we won't lose, but I bet with a bowl we win 10 games.

As much as I hate to see Dobbs leave, I'm excited about the upcoming quarterback battle. It should make for a fun spring.

I like to jump into the fray and get my hands dirty once in a while. Lol.

I think the discussions are fun when folks are civil and looking to actually converse rather than spewing an agenda. There are great points made on all sides.

I still wonder how much or if it would have made a difference if we actually had a real S&C coach last year

This ain't hard folks. We have a lot of returning guys, we are just young in our depth.

If you would like to count the receivers, it's eye popping

I too look forward to the competition and hope that the quality of play makes the decision on a starter difficult. Yes, I'd like three QBs seeing the field, making good decisions, throwing lasers to receives in the flats and beautiful arches to WRs sprinting down the sidelines. IMHO, the best problem to have would be all QBs on the roster ready to start, even if it means someone transfers before their eligibility is up.

Admittedly, for me, the long off-season is a time for revery, orange Nehi-fueled dreams of over achievement and future grid-iron glory. Oh well, Spring training should give us a glimpse of reality soon enough.

Are you trying to be facetious? There are 7 returning scholarship WR's if you count Byrd and only one, Jennings, has done anything in the SEC. Then... UT adds 3 3* WR's... and that is "eye popping"?

I wouldn't discount Josh Smith. He's a solid wideout.

All right I'm somewhere were I can do this real quick for you guys.
