Coaching Changes Post Signing Day

As a collective the LBs did not preform well all year IMO. A walk on Jumper was 4th on team in tackles behind TKjr, Abernathy, and Gaulden. You cant say they were a bright spot when runners get past them and into the secondary considering we seem to have recruited well at the position. Using Jumper as an example is not setting the bar high enough of what we could be achieving.
LB play goes hand-in-hand with DL play. That is where I thought we were sub par both before and after injuries.

An elite coach would. CBJ has not evolved to that point.

Coach Jones is a relatively young head coach with lots of things to still learn! He has progressed every year while with us and next year will tell the story of whether he's learned anything and/or whether he's willing to adjust. He has proven that he'll cut ties with friends, for the better of the program.

The DT position specifically in the last half of the season. When they went down, we went down. Have to give props to the production we had on the outside from the defensive line though.

Did you ever think that production was because of no JRM and basically no DK Jr (after the VaTech game)?

I'm looking at cumulative of 4 years with decent recruiting of the position. I know plagued with injuries but there were some not injured highly regarded recruits that weren't even serviceable.

I hope none of these mighty 3*s jump somewhere else, due to any Post National Signing Day Coaching changes...

Once you sign, you jave to be released by the university. Doubt any will bail. Its just the CBJ haters with the tar and feathers plotting his demise and making things up. Alternative answers.

Any update on the Hoke/Strip situation??

Is it a far gone conclusion that Wells replaces Mahoney? I personally hope we hire a proven guy...

If D.Craig is available I'd go get him. He's an elite recruiter and LSU WRs have been pretty good.

I must be the only one that thinks Thigpen has done a poor job of developing players, and it seems like the more time he has to work with them the more they regress. They were exposed when we lost our best 3 DT by being out of position and unable to shed a block and just seemed to be on their heals waiting instead of attacking the LOS. Could this be a product of him not being able to grasp Shoop's Defensive or not being able to coach or a combination of both? Forget about any perceived greatness in recruiting ability. I believe we added some good players in this recruiting class at the position and would like to see them reach their potential.

2014
Bates 4* .9536
Mcdowell 4* .9235 moved from S
Bryant 4* .8976
Berry 3* .8528

2015
Kirkland Jr 4* .9271
Sapp 4*.9077
Smith 3* .8631 moved to DE

2016
Bituli 4* .9147
Blakley 3* .8639

"Super Walk-On"
Jumper

It is impossible to play the LB position behind a DL that does not exist. In past years or LB play has been solid.

I've heard nothing but good about Craig as far as coaching and recruiting. Wasn't he a QB though?

Yes, he played QB for Auburn. In fact, he took Auburn to the SEC championship game against Peyton and the Vols in 1997. Hell of a competitor, remember him slapping one of his OL in the butt for back to back penalties in that same game

So It's not too hard to imagine that Thig is not on the same page with the new DC and that is part of the problem with our LB production.
If anyone can point to a LB he coached to the NFL I will adjust my opinion accordingly.

I sure as hell don’t want to lose to Big Ten teams. They were rated higher than we were so it was a good win. If we had lost, you guys would have ape sh—.

Again, if that's what satisfies you... then we just have different standards. I would argue that losses during each of the last 3 seasons put UT in bowl games against inferior opponents. If Jones had beaten one of the worst UF teams in recent memory in '14 then the Vols probably face a better opponent. If he wins even one of OU, UF, or Ark then UT plays someone better. If he had just beaten Vandy this past year... he probably gets a NYD-6 bowl against a top opponent.

Some wins are just more meaningful than others.

Very few coaches "evolve" like that. Even fewer do it after they've been a HC for 10 years. Almost none do it without a job change and serious self assessment.

You call losing to a reasonably good Vandy team in year one with less talent then 3 years later losing to a really bad Vandy team with much more talent progress?

At best, he hasn't changed at all. He may have regressed.

Anyone think that CBJ is playing his staff cards close to the vest? Declined to answer because he has talks/negotiations in play? If that's the case, wouldn't silence be prudent?

I'm all for canning Mahoney but why replace him with a GA? Butch is so freaking small minded.

Nick Saban did it with Sarkisian...a WEEK before the championship game! How big is that noggin? :)

Swain tweeted this a few minutes ago.....

"Brady Hoke to Tennessee has been in the making for weeks. Let's see what he can do this time"

I asked him if it was official yet. His reply....

"All these schools have been just waiting on NSD to make staff changes. It's not official yet. Canales-Scott Hire was known for weeks too"

My guess, Butch goes all-in, and keeps the current staff as it is now. He's ride or die for Don Mahoney.

If accurate...I'm thinking Butch/Mahoney start a new fall tv show plotting a couple of ex coaches who share a dwelling, buds who won't quit on each other floating through life just showing up. entitled ''Our crazy 5 star all in for life lives''
