Coaching Changes Post Signing Day

Still shaking my head that Butch brought in Mahoney and cut Pittman loose when he got here.

I agree but those who know more about schematics say he wasn't a fit for our offense. However you see UGA runni g a variation of pistol and spread quite a bit their not really lining up in I form anymore just my observation

I'm betting we have at least 3 coaches go. Mahoney is obvious just I think Thingpen gets let go and someone steals Coach G.

I'm ok on Mahoney and Thigpen.
But, on Coach G.....no, no,no.....he must stay....open the Pilot Oil piggy bank, if needed.

I must be the only one that thinks Thigpen has done a poor job of developing players, and it seems like the more time he has to work with them the more they regress. They were exposed when we lost our best 3 DT by being out of position and unable to shed a block and just seemed to be on their heals waiting instead of attacking the LOS. Could this be a product of him not being able to grasp Shoop's Defensive or not being able to coach or a combination of both? Forget about any perceived greatness in recruiting ability. I believe we added some good players in this recruiting class at the position and would like to see them reach their potential.

2014
Bates 4* .9536
Mcdowell 4* .9235 moved from S
Bryant 4* .8976
Berry 3* .8528

2015
Kirkland Jr 4* .9271
Sapp 4*.9077
Smith 3* .8631 moved to DE

2016
Bituli 4* .9147
Blakley 3* .8639

"Super Walk-On"
Jumper

Seems to be enough talent. Again raises the question of why a HC doesn't recognize a problem before year 5.

Florida made some changes today too. Hired WVU running backs coach. Also, it said their OL replacement is imminent.

It seems football scoop was referring to LSU and Florida. I wonder if there is a timeline for any additional Tennessee staff changes.

Sadly any changes that may be made won't be an upgrade at any position. Have any of you watched how CBJ has handled hiring, especially on the offensive side. He will bring in some under qualified puppet that knows they are lucky to get a P5 job and will kiss CBJ rearend while doing nothing to develop our players.
If there are changes on D it certainly won't be a big name, just hope it's someone Shoop can work with.

One can only hope he did but he could have been hampered in trying to replace his staff by the athletic department since it has been unsettled for a few years now. Get better assistants in here and actually coach them up.

I'm just trying to look at it objectively in terms of building a program and we are at a juncture where we have improved our depth and have to improve our coaching to take the next step. CBJ has some deficiency as a HC in regards to offensive philosophy so I would like for him to learn and adapt to what it takes to be a great SEC coach. Great well coached players with offensive and defensive philosophies that win ballgames is what I want from him.

I definitely think we will see some changes. If not certain guys would have already gotten contract extensions.

However, I did find it interesting that Butch mentioned he interviewed 10 coaches for the QB position, 5 NFL and 5 NCAA. He stated he knew it was Canales from the beginning but wanted him to prove himself to everybody. It seems nobody else really got a fair shot if he already "knew" it was Canales.

the old buddy system at work again, sans Mike De bord.

Jumper went from being the worst backer I've ever seen wear a UT Jersey to a serviceable player. Not to mention, we had multiple injuries at the LB position as well. I'd say your judgment of Thigpen should be reevaluated.

Pittman’s OL sucked this year. He had essentially an all pro college talent when he was here. They graduated and he had very good talent at UArk but still did now win the rushing title. We gained more yards they and scored more points than his teams the last two years. I don’t miss him at all.

If your goal is to beat middling Big 10 opponents... then that's probably pretty comforting.

I sure as hell don’t want to lose to Big Ten teams. They were rated higher than we were so it was a good win. If we had lost, you guys would have ape sh—.

Mahoney's contract will not be renewed. Wells will be promoted to OL coach. Strip is safe, but if he retires or moves over to the administrative side, Hoke is a possibility, but far from a sure thing. Unless someone hires him away, ZA stays put until next season. Next year, he probably looks around after being passed over for OC twice. His goal is to rise through the coaching system. He's gone as far as he's going to here.
The only problem with Hoke is he will follow wherever Kelly and Helfrich end up.

As a collective the LBs did not preform well all year IMO. A walk on Jumper was 4th on team in tackles behind TKjr, Abernathy, and Gaulden. You cant say they were a bright spot when runners get past them and into the secondary considering we seem to have recruited well at the position. Using Jumper as an example is not setting the bar high enough of what we could be achieving.
