And what does it say when one coach's assistants are getting hired away as HC's and power 5 coordinators, while another coach's assistants can't even get on at Georgia Southern? Anyone that wants to know why we underachieved this past year and are now looking at a "depth class" in recruiting need look no further than this. Been bringing a knife to a gunfight. Smh.

I can be a negative Nancy, but even I feel like a lot of you guys are blowing this recruiting class out of proportion.

It's not good by any means, but it's far from the disaster some are making it out to be

I tuned out for the basketball portion but the football stuff can be summarized in two words: depth class.

Basically, DM says we only need a RB and WR to play as freshmen out of this class. He stated that we have depth and talent but then made an acknowledgement that our talent level is debatable. He also said this class will have to be coached up if they're going to fill the role of a depth class. I think this is pretty much the company line that the coaches want to get out there to explain lack of star power in this class, even though anyone with internet access can see that they definitely pursued the star power and just whiffed all over the board. If they say they can compete in the SEC with what they've got, the new AD needs to hold them to their words.

Thanks, VH.

It is closer to a disaster than it is to being good?

That is laughable.

Being a bit hyperbolic. I don't think it is very good though. Add in the original hype and potential and I think it is teetering. Laugh away though. It's needed around here with our sunshine leaving us.

I agree.
SEC wasn't the greatest this season on the field but it's still the toughest recruiting conference. And no denying that we're mid-pack this year.

But that's still a top 20 class, if you didn't know that and just read the comments, you would think it was 73rd or so, in the nation.

We have to get back near the top to compete in our conference, but these kids are not a bunch of scrubs. A lot of talented guys here.

No shiz. It's the company line though, so we're going to get earful after earful of it this week and beyond. Maybe someone in state government will conduct an audit on why we need the largest recruiting budget in the conference for a depth class.

You never fail. Considering that the athletic department is self-sustaining, our state government doesn't give a flip.

Depth class really meaning we don't have holes in the roster where we need freshman to play right away. We can take more high ceiling recruits that need a couple years development before they are ready.

What recruits fit the higher ceiling mold than ones ready to play now?

You're making a lot of sense. Prepare for nega-flames!

Edit: Too late. The Contrarian has already pounced.

Aka lower rated guys, correct?

I feel like that's such a weak argument. Our roster is in such good shape that we don't need higher rated recruits that could push for immediate playing time? That's asinine.

Just call a spade a spade. This class is much weaker than expected because we failed to live up to expectations & Butch's message has gone stale.

The OL from McMinnville fits the mold of high Ceiling but not ready to play now but that's the only one I could see being a good argument saying a higher rated player wouldn't have been better.

I really am not sure your last paragraph is the case. We lost out on Higgins, Phillips, Stevens, and even Gibbs before the season started. That's concerning but had nothing to do with our season results. We weren't getting guys like Akers either. I thought wins would help, but I don't think that was the case now. We need to keep our 5 star instate players. Keep them and it's a top 5 class.

It's still clear that the staff can evaluate. Bama was considering Shamburger as a back up plan. Notre Dame took a late run at Bailey. Murphy visited Ole Miss. LSU flirted with Labruzza. Florida and others flirted with Page. These were all guys that people criticized for taking early. It's not as bad as people are suggesting.

That makes sense for those names but there are plenty of names later this process where We took much lower ranked players due to missing on the higher recruits. It's just not factual to use those in the same vain as taking them as higher ceiling guys.

Recruiting doesn't end in August though.

The entire offseason & early parts of the season people around here kept suggesting "when we're 11-1 going into Atlanta, recruits will be lining up, we'll flip some of these guys, etc etc"
