Well you are not wrong. I think that given his body of work and the success that he has had lends to the possibility of being a great to elite playcaller is more probable than falling on his face but only time will tell. I certainly don't think his playcalling chops should be judged after next year good or bad.

Fair enough. I'm not there, but hopefully he's a quick study.

The first time our O-Line was hurt. I'm not saying we win but if the team would do the basics and coaches would open up the playbook we wouldn't have gotten smashed. That team never played like it was capable of. Not even in the Va.Tech game.

This. We never really showed up all year for a full game, healthy or not.

I get it, the fan base sucks and isn't patient, but the evidence that he will be an elite play caller and the evidence that we will be a catastrophic play caller is virtually the same. I'm asking without malice or guile, where do you see the potential for him to be great so strongly?

I said from the beginning that I thought this was the plan. Given they had him in the booth and probably ran over scenarios with him, they had an entire season to evaluate him and he apparently gained their confidence. That honestly seems like no bigger of a risk than trying to bring in someone else to change things up in a pivotal year. I'm okay with this.

That's fine, but as much speculation as anything.

Last several years we have been in the middle of the SEC in recruiting, we will never have a great year that way. 2015 was a slight exception but we had thirty recruits which drove up our composite. We also have to retain these guys, that only makes a good class average.

Gullickson will help mightily with the discipline. Discipline is born in the weight room.

That is why it was unsurprising to me that an area Butch's teams have been great at since he got here-- discipline-- was horrid when we lacked an S&C coach.

Yeah that's interesting to think about. I'm hoping we look back and the 2016 season was an outlier in terms of team discipline. Hopefully it's not a sign of things to come.

I agree on Gullickson. He seemed pretty impressive to me. I also think Charlton Warren in the secondary will bring some much needed discipline to that unit. Former military guy. That hire excites me a lot.

I don't think this issue will be lost on Butch going into this offseason. I bet we'll be much better in the areas we can control next year.

You would love to see our second string defensive ends get mauled playing defensive tackle? I think you guys are completely missing the point here I'm not saying I wouldn't have wanted a rematch I'm saying because of our injuries the rematch still would have been pointless.

I'm not trying to persuade your line of thinking because you will always take the negative road whether I disagree or not just saying we didn't go into 07 sec championship game thinking we're going to get geblown out like we would have this year if we made it right? Because in 2007 we all believed UT had a really good shot to compete against lsu and win

This marks the 1st time in my 7 years on Volnation that anyone has ever called me negative.

Catbone, you proud of me? :loco:

I agree but that's not my point...getting butt raped again by Alabama in the sec championship game would not have been fun. Who cares about being happy with making it there I want to put a team in there that has a chance to win it

The thing is, we would have met one of our goals, which was to win the East. And, we would not have lost to bottom-feeders, who we were supposed to beat. We would likely have been 10-4, but we might have given Oklahoma a game in the Sugar Bowl, and that would have been much, much better momentum than winning the MCB. I don't think we would have gotten run out of the stadium in the Sugar Bowl, so getting there would have been more of a positive than beating Nebraska in the MCB. I don't want to belittle that win. I enjoyed it thoroughly and I like how well the staff seems to prepare the team for a bowl game. I just have a hard time thinking it is better by not getting killed in the SECCG.

This scouting report of Dobbs proves why Debord did some good things, but he was not great. Why not more slants? 6 of 8 passes over 40 yards were touchdowns, why not more deep balls? These things and the underuse of Kamara were his major faults. These minor tweaks could go a long way. Maybe Scott will be better.

At this rate, there will not be any years where we out-recruit Bama, LSU, Georgia, or maybe Florida. They have built-in advantages that we simply don't have. Even when we have ranked ahead of UGA the last 10 years, they are literally right behind us. That starts us at 5th off the bat. Then, if Auburn and A&M have good years, we are right in the middle. The common denominator of all of those schools? They have more prospects within a 2 hour radius than we will ever have.

That is just where we are in the SEC. We just can't lose to USC or Vandy on a consistent basis and have to pull out an upset against UGA or UF every so often.

Wasn't the interception against Bama out in the right flat...certainly less than 10 yards, IIRC? Or am I not remembering it correctly?

Extremely valid and unfortunate points, however in the last three years we havent come close to locking down East or Middle TN.

That is probably true for 2017, but I don't believe it to be true for 2015 and 2016. Our staff doesn't want all players in East or Middle TN, regardless of what Rivals ranks them.

In 2016, out of top 10, we probably missed on Joejuan Williams and maybe Bryce Matthews. Never really pursued the others or had a chance with Mitchell. Probably mis-evaluated Tyrell Dodson.

In 2015, we landed the top 3 in the state and missed on Van Jefferson. We were in it and know what happened. Maybe missed on McGraw, but his boy, Pruitt was at UGA, and in hindsight, it wasn't a loss. We did not pursue the others that hard.

Edit: If we had 20+ more 4 stars in East or Middle TN like some other SEC schools have, then we would get more of our share. Bigger pool to choose from.

I have erased that game from my memory

Coincidentally (as it relates to your post), I have DirecTV and have UT football and basketball set up as season recordings, and it keeps all the recordings in a folder. When I finished watching the Miss. St. game Saturday, I inadvertently told it to delete the entire folder instead of just Saturday's basketball game.

I had the VT, UF, UGA, aTm, Missouri, KY and Nebraska games still saved but, alas, they are gone now. :cray:

Hyams was just on Finebaum's show talking about the AD situation and Butch's future. He said nothing we haven't already heard on this forum. I swear sometimes I think he gets his information from this board.

He did say he thought next year was a 7 or 8 win season for us. He also believes Butch's safety number is 8 wins. Anything less than that and he's in serious trouble.

I don't understand the thought that next year is a 7 or 8 win season. Whether we want to admit it or not, we lost 4 games because we had 20 injuries. That's a fact. We don't lose to USC or Vandy if half our roster isn't sitting on the bench. That's a fact. Still could've won, but our defense being completely depleted is the main reason why we lost those games, no doubt. Yes we are losing Dobbs, Barnett and Kamara. The other losses aren't that significant because they didn't play much anyway because they were injured. Barnett is a big loss on defense, but we still have two 5 star DEs in kongbo and Phillips, as well as solid contributors in Taylor and others. They aren't Barnett, but who is? They are very good players and will be better this year. Also, what if we add Ray?We have Tuttle and Kmac back, we have John Kelly, JJ and others on offense. Our OL should be outstanding as they are talented and now experienced. Replacing Dobbs is extremely tough but how do we know how Dormady/JG will be? They could be better. Some red shirt freshmen have played and not been very good. Others have won the heisman! JG is extremely talented, most talented recruit at QB we've had in a long, long time. He could be great for us day one. Or, Dormady could dramatically improve our downfield passing game, that coupled with an improved OL, Kelly, Chandler and others running the ball, our offense could be great. If our QBs aren't ready, 7/8 wins is likely. If they are ready tho, who knows? We still have talent all over the field from that 2015 class. Don't forget, we upgraded at DB coach, possibly adding another big time DL coach, and Scott could potentially be an upgrade over Debord. I don't know what the 2017 season holds, but I don't understand people saying it's an automatic 8 win season. Heck, some of the people saying Dobbs isn't any good are now saying we can't win next season cause we have to replace him.

It's not 2017 that worries me. 2018 could be a very tough year, and the beginning of a slide back to long term mediocrity. Having big seasons could spring Kelly, Jennings, KMac, Kirkland, and/or Kongbo to declare for the draft. Now, in no way will they all have that good of a year in 2017, but the overall talent has not kept up with the downward trend in recruiting, and to some extend, the attrition. We've certainly gotten a few potential high level players in the last class and this class, but like it or not, that's just not good enough in the SEC.
