Dubya gets a bad rap. Everyone thinks he's a complete idiot, then you hear from his advisers that he's smarter than them. Pretty good painter too. Would love to have a beer with that man.

I will vehemently disagree with abolishing it.

I like that it keeps a few huge urban population centers from selecting the leader for the government of the entire country.

I am someone that values the states over the federal government anyhow. It's another check on the system to me.
I feel like a better way of doing it would just be to tally the votes by who takes each HOR district and then give the 2 senatorial votes to the winner of that state.

not funny at all

that is a stupid thing to say in any setting :the_finger:

Sorry if you feel the joke was in bad taste.

Your dad is either blinded by party hyperbole or is misremembereding "stagflation" by comparing the Obama economy to the Carter economy. It's not similar by any economic measurable.

This! All of the blue collars that voted for him because he cares about the little guy are in for a jolt, only thing Trump cares about is Trump. He is a salesman and said what he needed to say to get elected, period. He may do some good things economy wise, have no idea but foreign policy, I am scared of what he's going to do in this area.

I know I'm in the minority on this board on Trump but for the ones that like him, do you not have any pause that on his first day after inauguration he gets in a piss fight over the size of the crowds? I honestly think he gets impeached for some underhanded acts before his term is finished.

I know I'm about to get flamed so I think I will check out for a while..lol
Conservatives will have a majority on the Supreme Court for the next couple of decades. Existing immigration laws will be enforced. Free trade will be redefined to apply only to good produced on a relatively even playing field. The rest is just eye candy.

Since the joke was directed towards me I will reply. Yes that joke was in horrible taste. I don't expect you to know this, but multiple people in my family have died from some form of dementia. Recently my grandmother. This joke is getting to the point of joking about rape or abortion. I understand you feel "smarter" or "adding to the conversation", but when you tell jokes like that you're just showing that you're a jack*** and no one should take you seriously with any you say afterwards.

I think it would be worth looking at.

Surely someone has done a study to see how the last 10 elections or so would have turned out under an arrangement like that.

And here I thought liberals were the overly sensitive type.

My father had Alzheimer's the last 4 years of his life. It's horrible, stressful and extremely heartbreaking.

I liked what you said, you bout lost me on the salesman end. Evert politician that ive ever known was a salesman to some degree...save maybe Fred Thompson, why be bowed out so early. Those who think Trump is a right winged at heart need to do some research. The man contributed to both Bill and Hillary's campaigns...at any rate. I disagree with him on many fronts, mainly not being a ****ing ******* to other human beings...but thats not for this board.

The dems can point to his amateurish behaviour re: tweeting, and not taking this role seriously. But we all knew there were cincerns about his behaviour. The greatest predictor of the future is the past. This country made its bed now we get to lay in it.

moving on.

True dat on the salesman part! The reason I used that is I'm a salesman. People buy from people they like. As a salesman, you find out what interests your prospective client has and gear your pitch accordingly, even if what you're saying you don't really believe, anything to build rapport.
This is what Trump did in my opinion. Before deciding to run, he had always been friends with Bill and Hillary. He's on record saying in 2008 that he believed she would make a great president. His new found conservatism will begin to deteriorate soon in my opinion.
I understand the want for change, I just disagree with the candidate who is charged with obtaining the change.

I hope I'm 100% wrong..

The bottom line is that the salt of the earth middle of the country voted for a born into money spoiled egomaniac New Yorker who could not care less about anything past E. 60th street unless it has a craps table or 18 holes thinking he will bring them change.

Hey we need less serial killers around, lets vote for Ted Bundy!

Its equal parts tragedy and comedy.

I would really like to see the EC abolished, I have a place in Al and Ms, so I could have been registered to vote in either state but it would not have mattered because I could have voted a thousand times and it would not change anything in either state. Only way every person is assured his vote counts is to go on popular vote.
Second time in 16 yrs where popular vote lost. Maybe it would have come out the same way if we went with popular vote but we will never know..

I guess you soul love to see a few Megalopolises on the coasts monopolize power. That is a recipe for civil war.

Big time amen..

The concept of "one person, one vote" is the trump card to me. It is irrelevant where they live.

It is absolutely not irrelevant. But like I've said, go ahead and disenfranchise 75-80% of the country and see what happens. Eventually the hinterlands get sick of it and revolt.

If by "revolt" you mean get out and vote? That would be awesome. We may get better than 50% voter participation if people actually believed their vote counted the same.

This idea that candidates would campaign in 10 urban cities and ignore the rest of the country is a falsehood.

The electoral college helps ensure that the less populace states are relevant in the presidential election. If we went with a popular vote, New York, Chicago, LA, Boston, Philly, Atlanta, and other large population bases would elect the president making all the voters in the fly over states irrelevant. Popular vote is scary because many people are easily swayed by lies or can simply be bought because they have no morals. Switching to a popular vote would signal the beginning of the end of our way of governing IMO. And no I am not sensationalizing.

The Electoral College was created as a check against foreign influence in our elections.

Your argument is basically people in "flyover" states are somehow wiser and better morals than those in urban areas?

No. My argument is that the people in the flyover states matter just as much and those in the urban areas. The large majority of welfare recipients live in urban areas and can be "bought" with the promise of more government assistance and programs. How about this, we go to a popular vote but if you are on welfare you give up your right to vote. Just like Congress shouldn't be allowed to vote them selves a pay raise, you shouldn't be allowed to vote if you stand to benefit without providing equal benefit in exchange.

Falsehood? Hillary almost won by doing exactly that. Did you see how many actual counties she won? What I said is true. Do you not see the map and wonder why? Explain it away by calling all those states ignorant provincial rubes, and that only fuels the anger, and you don't even understand, or care why.

Except it is not. We are a republic per the Constitution. Which makes where you live foundational to the union of states when it comes to voting. Change it and watch how fast the union dissolves.
