85 had two ties...so throw that one out.(But I don't care if they sniffed a NC or not, still my second favorite UT squad ever) Probably with Webb don't mean squat. I will give you 89, but I don't remember being in the convo for NC that year or not, but I'll give you that one. Either way Fulmer was way ahead in terms of UT success. I'm not doggin Johnny, he laid the groundwork that Fulmer capitalized on, but the argument was about hiring asst coaches, and who's style worked out better. You have to say Fulmers did, it produced much more consistent success over many more years
SIAP - 2017 NFL Mock Draft 1.0 Round 1 - Mel Kiper
Kiper has Garrett going 1.1, Barnett all the way down at 31. Has 7 pass rushers going before him. Doesnt make sense to me.
Webb doesn't mean squat? Probably the best RB in the history of the program. He would have made that team better. They don't get beat by Bama 9-6 with Webb on the field. They just don't.
Oh deer lord that is not what I meant by that..Jeez. I think Chuck Webb is the greatest RB in UT history. My point was it doesn't matter IF Webb hadn't got injured..he did. Do you even know what the argument is about? Stay in context man.
All Tennessee teams are so frustrating this season. Lady Vols just blew a 17 point lead and now losing by 20 against a crap team, after beating 6 Notre Dame. Men Basketball is the same way, and we know how the football season went.
I see what you were saying. But, I still take issue with the statement Johnny didn't sniff a championship.
For Fulmer, you said he had more sustained success. My rebuttal would be:
1. He took over a program that was already built for title contention. Johnny most certainly did not.
2. Fulmer had way more success over the first half of his career when he had an ace recruiter (Garner) and a top notch OC (Citcliffe).
When Cut left, he thought he could promote Sanders and not skip a beat the way he did with Chavis as DC.
His recruiting went steadily on the decline, and Cut returned and masked a lot of shortcomings that were already there.

And yet, whatever coaching success Johnny had with us, Fulmer was a significant part of that, first as OL coach then OC, then the stepping-in head guy, taking it to a higher level than stubborn J. managed to do. I love Johnny, but he was not without his own imperfections, as is true for each of us.
