He's definitely not bad, but I think a proven, elite qb coach/OC like Helfrich or O'Connell is what our rivals are getting, while we're getting "under the radar" type coaches to run our offense. That's where the disgruntled feeling comes from. It's not a terrible hire who's more likely to fail than succeed, but it would be nice to just pony up for the elite coach that is almost guaranteed to succeed because he always has.
As much as I don't care for Canales hire, at least we could be upgrading at other positions to over come that.
Willie couldn't find any takers so we finally had to move on before Warren was no longer an option. Warren appears to be a nice upgrade on field and potentially in recruiting. Plus he is a guy people want and not some reject.
Mahoney can't find any takers. Wells gets better interviews than him. From all indications, Wells will be a upgrade in recruiting especially in midstate. Coaching TBd but he has some nice accolades from his Western Ky days. Seen some say that he took Richmond under his wing after his demotion and was a key to his late season improvement.
Rock is huge upgrade of Sczerson and prob the one with the biggest impact next season outside of Warren.
Strip for Hoke. I'm not sure what I think there. Hoke is more relentless in recruiting trail but Strip is no slouch when in front of the kids. What would be really cool here is if we do get to have a 10th assistant to go Hoke and Strip as DE/DT coaches with whoever is better at each one.
I get the feeling, and this is just my opinion, that Butch hates turnover. I think he sometimes settles on certain coaches because he wants continuity and not risk coaches constantly coming and going. If it were me, I want the best coach/recruiter I can get, even if I only have them for a year or two.
Johnny Majors was this way, and the list of assistant coaches he had here is astonishing. Fulmer went more with the continuity route. (Probably partially because of the way he got to be HC) That was probably his biggest downfall and played a major role in his ouster. (This is also my main reservation about him being AD, but that's another discussion entirely.)
It sounds like those guys aren't attainable. Helfrich can pick his job, and it appears O'Connell wants to stay in the NFL.
LSU's QB coach is Steve Ensminger, UGA is Jim Chaney, USC is Kurt Roper, Auburn's just went to UConn, A&M is Noel Mazzone, Ole Miss was Dan Werner, MSU is Brian Johnson (who is very young)...how many of these would you trade for? The funny thing is 2 have been at UT and were criticized while here.
The only one that is a definite is probably Doug Nussmeier at UF and maybe now Sarkisian.
