GA's and QC's are allowed to echo an assistant coach. They aren't allowed to coach.

I could be wrong, but I'm almost certain GA are allowed on the field to work hands on during practice, but QC are not. Thats why Jalen Hurts had barely spoken to Sarkisian all season.

I gave you no answers, I just think it's a good judge of his hires.

Here's a list, from memory, you come to your own conclusion:

Elder
Jancek
Martinez
Debord
Sheridan
Bajakian

All the current staff members.

Elder went for a better opportunity
Jancek fired, downward position
Martinez, fired no job yet
Debord, left on his own, downward position
Sheridan, left presumably on his own for full time coaching position
Bajakian, left presumably on his own for NFL, lateral type move IMO.

If you look at current staff:

Shoop has been in high demand in past
Gillespie, rumored to have been targeted by several programs
Scott rumored to have been targeted for head coaching positions
Mahoney rumored to being forced out, no one apparently wants him
Azzani rumored to have been on thin ice, can't find another job.
Thigpen, who knows?
Strip, rumored to be retiring, not heavily sought after but it could be because of his age
Warren, younger coach, seems to be well respected.

Canales, no major school has wanted him for 20 years except Butch

So reading the last 4 pages or so has been equivalent to this:

I've been looking for the news release or the video of Canales' PC but I haven't found it. Well it turns out, that he hasn't actually been hired. So basically, the b****fest that has been going on in here since last night was all based on a rumor. Wow. Y'all sure know how to make a mess. Clean up on aisle three please!

So O'Connell seems like he wants to stay in the NFL.

Weinke has potential but hasn't coached squat. Some on here want him because he is a recognizable name and has played catch with some good NFL QBs. Probably the same ones moaning about Scott not having any play calling experience. You can't have it both ways ladies.

Durden has some good experience and success at his previous stops. UTC was very successful with him as the OC/QB coach. However, he just left for Richmond with Russ Huesman so he may not want to move again so soon and he may want the full OC/QB title. If Butch is set on Scott as at least partial OC then this could be a sticking point. I personally like the Durden option the best but it may be a bridge too far if we can't give him what he wants.

Finally, we have Canales. He has many years of coaching at the college level. He has been a OC, QBC, RBC, TEC, and Interim HC. He has coached some good QBs and has had some success at several of his stops despite the assertions of some that he is a loser everywhere he goes.

Butch is going into a crucial year and could potentially be coaching for his continued tenure as the UT HC. We saw what happened when Dools tried to get fancy and make big changes on one side of the ball in a crucial year. We had one of the worst D's in UT history and we began looking for a new HC. I think that given the options listed above, it would be a smart play to go with Canales. He has enough experience that you know what you are getting. His offenses in the past have been spread type offenses that are at least in the same family of offense that we run here so his philosophy won't be a foreign one.

Weinke's coaching chops are too much of an unknown to me. He coached HS and one year in the pros on a bad team. Not his fault but I wouldn't want to bet my job on him being a knockout QB coach at the college level. What has he done to earn a P5 opportunity? He may be great and we might regret it if we don't hire him but I just don't think it would be a smart move to gamble on him. Plus if we tank next season, like many of you believe we will, he wouldn't be around long enough to let his apparent recruiting acumen come to fruition. That is his recruiting that we have ZERO evidence of.

So, I would love to have Durden but I think there are roadblocks that keep that from happening. Weinke may be great but he has very little coaching experience, none at the college level, and we have no evidence that he can recruit. O'Connell seems content to wait for an NFL opening, probably because the recruiting requirement doesn't appeal to him. So that leaves us with an experienced QB coach that has several successful QBs to point to and say I helped coach them at the college level and one has had great success in the NFL. Kids don't know who Weinke is any more that they know who Canales is. I think Canales is the overall best choice for Butch, the staff, and the development of the QBs.

I have no doubt Canales will be a good hire, he's experienced no doubt. It's just a meh hire. Cue the yawn emoji.
We felt the same about Debored, I'll play the wait and see game. I learned with some of the previous buddy hires not to get too uptight over what CBJ does, I have zero control over it, so no need to get bent about it.

No. His GA time was up. That is why most thought he would be promoted full time to QB coach last year when Elder left.

Then you guys saying he was the QB coach are completely proven wrong. Lol. They guy wasn't even on the practice field.

This is pure gold. Lol at VN

It's simple GAs are on the field coaching. QC aren't. So Sheridan wasn't the QB coach this year no matter how many times VN says he was or says he was 100% coaching the QBs. Lol

Let's say you have made your point, whether true or not, and be done with it

Lol. Oh it's true.

You see VN likes to think if something is posted enough it's true so I have to combat that with the real truth and that is Sheriden wasn't coaching QB this year because he wasn't even on the damn field. Lol

Btw, just because NCAA says QC assistants aren't supposed to be teaching the players, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Do you seriously believe Jalen Hurts had zero contact with Sarkisian all year, then has the plays being called by him for the NC game? I don't. That's what has been told to the media, so that they are in accordance with the NCAA rules.

Yep, Atlanta radio briefly mentioned the job when they reported that Fulmer was a candidate. Nothing about how long it is taking or any other candidates though. 99.99% of people down here have no idea who the Tennessee AD is or that Tennessee is getting a new one. There is no national embarrassment because no one nationally knows or cares about it.

Get out of here with that common sense. You're ruining the narrative. lol

Nobody outside of our program and fanbase gives a crap. Does that make our leadership any less dysfunctional? No. But to think anybody else really cares is overstating our importance.

I don't believe CSS was on the field during practice in Any kind of coaching capacity nope I don't. Too many cameras around. Same with Sheriden.

It's been discussed here in the past it must be true. That truly is the Volnation way. You left out that during the individual periods of practice that Debord went to check the PH levels at the aquatic center leaving the QBs to a GA.

On another note I won't be surprised at all if this 247 report that Canales is the hire is another example of them being fed bogus info.

Come on dude. You're the poster child for creating a story to fit your agenda. Surely you must know this.

I can tell you for 100% fact that during practices and the one fall scrimmage that took place at neyland he worked directly with QBs. And was the "in huddle coach" for 2nd team offense.

I get the feeling, and this is just my opinion, that Butch hates turnover. I think he sometimes settles on certain coaches because he wants continuity and not risk coaches constantly coming and going. If it were me, I want the best coach/recruiter I can get, even if I only have them for a year or two.

Johnny Majors was this way, and the list of assistant coaches he had here is astonishing. Fulmer went more with the continuity route. (Probably partially because of the way he got to be HC) That was probably his biggest downfall and played a major role in his ouster. (This is also my main reservation about him being AD, but that's another discussion entirely.)

I didn't say he was on the field. You do know it's pretty easy to video Hurts or Dobbs the entire practice, then have the player sit in the film room with Sheridan or Sarkisian, and have the QB be coached based off of the film from practice, right? You know, in a film room, where there are no cameras and no one knows of the interaction between QB and QC assistant?

I know. I about spit coffee all over my screen reading his comments. He twists and manipulates his own points more than a contortionist.
