So reading the last 4 pages or so has been equivalent to this:
I've been looking for the news release or the video of Canales' PC but I haven't found it. Well it turns out, that he hasn't actually been hired. So basically, the b****fest that has been going on in here since last night was all based on a rumor. Wow. Y'all sure know how to make a mess. Clean up on aisle three please!
So O'Connell seems like he wants to stay in the NFL.
Weinke has potential but hasn't coached squat. Some on here want him because he is a recognizable name and has played catch with some good NFL QBs. Probably the same ones moaning about Scott not having any play calling experience. You can't have it both ways ladies.
Durden has some good experience and success at his previous stops. UTC was very successful with him as the OC/QB coach. However, he just left for Richmond with Russ Huesman so he may not want to move again so soon and he may want the full OC/QB title. If Butch is set on Scott as at least partial OC then this could be a sticking point. I personally like the Durden option the best but it may be a bridge too far if we can't give him what he wants.
Finally, we have Canales. He has many years of coaching at the college level. He has been a OC, QBC, RBC, TEC, and Interim HC. He has coached some good QBs and has had some success at several of his stops despite the assertions of some that he is a loser everywhere he goes.
Butch is going into a crucial year and could potentially be coaching for his continued tenure as the UT HC. We saw what happened when Dools tried to get fancy and make big changes on one side of the ball in a crucial year. We had one of the worst D's in UT history and we began looking for a new HC. I think that given the options listed above, it would be a smart play to go with Canales. He has enough experience that you know what you are getting. His offenses in the past have been spread type offenses that are at least in the same family of offense that we run here so his philosophy won't be a foreign one.
Weinke's coaching chops are too much of an unknown to me. He coached HS and one year in the pros on a bad team. Not his fault but I wouldn't want to bet my job on him being a knockout QB coach at the college level. What has he done to earn a P5 opportunity? He may be great and we might regret it if we don't hire him but I just don't think it would be a smart move to gamble on him. Plus if we tank next season, like many of you believe we will, he wouldn't be around long enough to let his apparent recruiting acumen come to fruition. That is his recruiting that we have ZERO evidence of.
So, I would love to have Durden but I think there are roadblocks that keep that from happening. Weinke may be great but he has very little coaching experience, none at the college level, and we have no evidence that he can recruit. O'Connell seems content to wait for an NFL opening, probably because the recruiting requirement doesn't appeal to him. So that leaves us with an experienced QB coach that has several successful QBs to point to and say I helped coach them at the college level and one has had great success in the NFL. Kids don't know who Weinke is any more that they know who Canales is. I think Canales is the overall best choice for Butch, the staff, and the development of the QBs.
