When UNT promoted Mike Canales they almost doubled their PPG the last 5 games. Then he was retained by the next head coach. That is somewhat a positive.

He's definitely not bad, but I think a proven, elite qb coach/OC like Helfrich or O'Connell is what our rivals are getting, while we're getting "under the radar" type coaches to run our offense. That's where the disgruntled feeling comes from. It's not a terrible hire who's more likely to fail than succeed, but it would be nice to just pony up for the elite coach that is almost guaranteed to succeed because he always has.

And help in recruiting. Nobody knows who Canales is except us

Last year was the year to do that. Or the year prior. This isn't the year to attract a volnation.com worthy type coach. Too many question marks about the future.

2008 offseason Fulmer hires Clawson:

Vol nation rejoiced with Fulmer going against the grain and adapting to spread to combat the evil Gator empire that used same system.

2008 season happens.....

Vol nation laments why Phil changed what wasn't broken and blames this hire for his termination.

2012 offseason Dooley hires Sunseri:

Vol nation rejoices that we broke the usual and adapted to what Bama is doing with a 3-4 scheme.

2012 season happens....

Vol nation laments what was both record breaking for both offense and defense and blames Dooley for changing what wasn't broken and ultimately cost him his job.

2017 offseason:

Butch hires coaches that don't change what's not broken in what can be a deciding season for his career. Players have been recruited for this exact scheme.

Vol nation doesn't remember history and *****es and moans again.

That should be eye opening to said "*****ers and moaners" but what experience tells us is that they will not be accepting. First step to getting help is accepting that you have a problem. Never been to AA but I think it goes something like that.

If he doesn't announce the Scott hire with the Canales hire does that mean he could still be looking for a Co-OC to go with Scott? You would think if he announces Canales that he would be set and could announce the Scott hire too.

Or they hired him with the expectation of adding a 10th assistant? If they rule change fails, they put him in some QC/Personnel type role?

No clue really, just kicking around ideas.

Could be. When do they vote on the 10th assistant rule? I remember hearing it was during the offseason this year but don't know when.

I find it odd that Sheriden was hired as a RB coach at a non power 5 job but was such a good QB coach.

It could be the Chippewas already had a QB coach. You don't think Sheridan landing at Central Michigan was purely coincidental, do ya?

Look at the uproar that the potential hiring of Canales has caused. Others harped that Weinke did not have enough experience. What would VN do if Sheridan was simply promoted? Most would clamor that he needed more experience. Landing at a non-Power 5 school is a step in the right direction and gets him coaching experience...and still at an FBS school.

Sheridan may well have been a quality QB coach, but without skins on his wall, VN would likely have gone ape****. And if Sheridan has higher aspirations somewhere down the line (I.e. an OC), then having coached multiple positions would be a plus. It's not unusual for coaches to have coached multiple positions in their careers.

I agree with Coach G. Scott has been a good recruiter, but as others mentioned the verdict is still out on him. Since he is about to be our OC, I guess we will find out soon enough.

Speaks volumes that CBJ would promote from within a guy who will be learning on the job as our OC in what could be a tipping point year for CBJ.
