The individual may not serve as a graduate assistant coach for a period of more than two years except that if the individual successfully completes 24-semester or 36-quarter hours during the initial two-year period, the individual may serve as a graduate assistant coach for a third year.

This is why Nick was able to qualify as a GA for a 3rd year.
ok Butch, that's 3 uses of individual in one comment. busted.

It makes absolutely no sense at all for Tennessee to break the rules to have a QC guy on the field. So, either he was not a QC guy (ding ding ding), or he did not coach on the field. As Hank seems to have some very specific details, I am going with his information that he was on the field and was able to remain a GA for the 3rd year. I know it was reported that he was made a QC, but maybe they found a way to keep him on the field where he was needed more. I think that the media guide was published and then they found a way to keep him as a GA and that is who coached our QB, probably with some help from Jones and Debord (very limited). In any event, I would think that Canales will be an improvement but all of that remains to be seen.

Hubbs article written 2 days ago said he was QC and qb coach, not a GA. So it sounds like we didn't have an on field qb coach other than Debord. Also, this article from last year says debord was qb coach, Sheridan officially moved to QC with focus on QB. So Sheridan did not coach QB during practice, only outside of practice.

Combined with the media guide, it's hard to argue that Sheridan was participating in practices (legally)

I would rather he fire them than take them to his grave like Fulmer did.

Staff turnover is a good thing in many cases.

I don't disagree, what I am saying is it is fair to judge him based on having to fire them, since he did hire them in the first place. I would have fired several of them before now. Better than that, I wouldn't have hired them in the first place. But that is easy for me to say from the sidelines. Butch's career hangs on his hires. Question is, does it hang him?

I'm loving seeing Georgia as the very early favorite to win the East. This means they'll lay an egg and Tennessee will sneak in because they're being picked to be 3rd

He couldn't be coaching off the field either
As QC coaches aren't allowed to coach in any way.

After reading all of this I am going to side with Hank. I don't think the media guide and other reports of him being the QC coach were accurate. Perhaps they filed some sort of appeal to get him approved for a third year. He was listed as a GA when hired at Central michigan so i am not sure anyone really knows for sure.

Thanks for the links. The Rivals article does seem to confirm that I was mistaken and I appreciate that you clarified it. Hank did seem to have some very detailed information. I don't think he was making it up. Something seems a little skewed here, but I cannot believe that we would have a QC coach on the field if he was not allowed to be there. I guess it does not matter as we are going to likely have Canales and hopefully he will be an improvement.

Vol nation rejoiced with Fulmer going against the grain and adapting to spread to combat the evil Gator empire that used same system.

2017 offseason:

Butch hires coaches that don't change what's not broken in what can be a deciding season for his career. Players have been recruited for this exact scheme.

Vol nation doesn't remember history and *****es and moans again.

Yea - AD search is a joke, Canales is a meh hire, and recruiting has fallen off

Is that better?

It is hilarious to me that you came around to believe Hank and I backed off on my assertion that he was still a GA. I do know one thing. I don't see how anybody could hope to keep up with all of these rules, loopholes and requirements. The NCAA is a bureaucracy at its very worst.

Yea honestly I don't know what to believe on the QC/GA thing but Hank made some sense. Either way Debord was the QB coach last year IMO and it doesn't matter to me how many times it's posted here he wasn't.

Thanks. Didn't know that

He does a segment on X's and O's each week and it is the only reason I watch the show. He does a very good job of breaking down plays.

Edit: Here's a one of the shows. Skip forward to the 24:20 mar. That's where his segment begins.
