You know, it really doesn't matter if we like the hire or not. If it's Canales then so be it. Gotta see how he develops our QBS, especially JG. With that talent, I hope it doesn't go to waste.

This is truly my stance on it. If he is the hire. Let's see what happens. The QB talent is here (or should be), let's see what he can do with it.

We hired (as some say, a swim coach) who put up what? The second best offensive numbers in UT history? Ride it out. We can always bit** about it later. Bit**ing about it now will not change anything. Give him time, he may surprise us.

There should be only one obvious answer to that question.

Peyton. Freaking. Manning.

But really, I expected everybody to say that so I contemplated putting "not named Peyton Manning" in my original post. Lol of course you would call me out on the first reply.

I'd like to have had Helfrich, Cumbie, or Yurcich. But no way those guys would have only come for QBs. Maybe Streeter from Clemson.

As someone that stumbles in here daily (if not hourly), I prefer "intellectually challenged". Makes me feel more important.

I don't consider you an FF'er. I just consider you as someone too stupid to understand where you really belong. :)

How's it going my friend?

Truth is, I read more over here.
I just say less because you guys already have it figured out. You can develop cataracts over there waiting for someone to put the pieces together.
It's like an entire room of Catbones without the humor. Morbid really.

I'm good, everything right in your world?

My choice? From a TN standpoint. The Iceman...Casey Clausen. I know, he was supposedly an ass (in college) but man, he had some skill, and no one was cooler under pressure.

If I was going to take a chance on a high school coach moving up to the college ranks...he would be on my short list. JMO of course.

Let's change the pace. It's obvious we're not thrilled with this hire. So if you could have had anybody for QB coach who would you have picked?

I'd have liked to have taken the approach of actually interviewing OC/QB coaches instead of having a sham search with the outcome predertimed.

Go ahead and interview Scott and Canales, but round out the search better like the following:

Some top level interviews like Yurcich from OSU or Cumbie at TCU

Some P5 QB coach who seems in line for a Co-OC or OC position: Maybe Streeter at Clemson

An OC at the FCS level who has had great offenses for 2-3 years and might be open to coaching QBs at UT (Durden might fit here)

An NFL guy like Weinke or O'Connel

Canales

Bring in a diverse group of guys and have a serious sit down and Xs and Os session with them. Maybe it works out, maybe it doesn't. Best case scenario is it turns out that you and a top flight guy could work really well together. Worst case scenario is you get your guy in Canales.

The fact he wouldn't interview a wider pool makes me think maybe Butch's pride couldn't handle being told no or that he's unwilling to consider that his scheme can be improved. In this case, bringing in a better group of guys is like going and talking to the hot girl at the bar who is probably out of your league: the worst thing that can happen is you're told no. And you still might come away from the situattion with a slightly different way of looking at things and grow from the experience.

Life is good. My used to be little one is in Kindergarten now. My newest little one is a year and a half old now. He's a crazy little sh**. Still getting questioned every day on how a 52 year old retired Marine is married to someone young enough to be his daughter. I tell ya brother, it's getting tiresome having to drop trou in front of everyone, just to get the point across.

For OC? He was a HR hire last year for sure, as TE coach

His best accomplishment thus far is getting us Byrd. As a TE coach, calling him a home run is hyperbole.

Croom and Wolf didn't take much of a step forward in 2016. They weren't a weakness, but most expected TE to be more of a strength for team 120 than it turned out to be.

We don't have shi* figured out over here. On any given day one or the other side is right and the other is wrong. We just understand that one little fact better.

But you earned a like for your freaky exhibitionist attitude. I salute you sir.

The Coot! Another good choice. Doubt he will ever be a college coach though. NFL is really starting to take notice of him.

As long as they can get over his name. Only reason he didn't get some interviews this go round. Dumb but I get it. I'd bet Fulmer would hire him in a heartbeat

He is going to be a HC one day, and came in with a great reputation as a recruiter and coach. We can utilize the TE better, but there were also plays to be made by Wolf that weren't at times. Pretty hard to judge based off that.

Gotcha.
She isn't very sensual and wanted someone who wouldn't hound her all the time. Hide yor pills and she's safe. Seems like a smart girl.

My boy is 10 and my girl is 7. Always thought I was the oldest dad on field trips. Thanks for making me realize I'm not :)

Can't believe your little one is a year and half already.
Sounds like everyone is doing well, good to hear.

If it's pretty hard to judge, then how is he a home run hire? The fact that he's on the path to being a HC doesn't mean anything in regards to how he's performed with our TEs.

I agree that it's too early to judge him, all things considered. I disagree when someone calls him a home run hire, though.

A home run hire at TE probably would have gotten more production out of Wolf and/or Croom (neither of whom made the most of their opportunities in 2016) and probably would've landed us a better TE than Brown (though Bumphus may have good upside there).

Maybe Wolf takes a big step forward in 2017 and some other young TE does as well and then we can say he was a home run. Right now, the most we can say is he's been solid.

No brother. I got you beat by a mile on field trips. My two oldest, by my first wife (if you recall, died of cancer), are old enough to be my younger kids parents. Son is 29 (Marine Corps also...now a disabled Vet) and daughter is 27.

I get asked daily if i'm the grandparent...then I drop trou...and get the OH....nevermind! :)

My first wife passed away 1 month before our 23rd anniversary. She is the one that grew up through the Marine Corps with me. My wife now...while she doesn't know/understand what my life/I was, understands/puts up with who I am because of it.

Two totally different women. Love them both the same for being totally different.

As far as the kid thing goes...I've changed my outlook on life on that. If only the good die young, my sorry ass is going to be here for a long ******* time. I have to spread my kids out accordingly. Self preservation and all... gotta make sure there is someone around to take care of me.

So do they have to pull out the magnifying glass since it's winter?

You did read the part where it said I'm old, right?

ok.....I do also have money...so I can see where that could throw some off.....but seriously....I'm a great guy. Honest Injun.

Because it was a very good hire to begin with. Don't see how it's that hard to understand. It was widely viewed as that last year at this time. That's my point. Could we utilize the TE position more? Of course, but we have to scheme to that. And coincidentally, the TE coach is going to be in charge of that. Wolf needs to be better for sure, as he was prematurely label a future NFL TE on here.
