I wouldn't say it's a foregone conclusion that he won't be drafted. I've seen much worse players get drafted in rounds 6-7. You're getting a proven QB, dynamic athlete, good mind. It's worth a shot even if you hope he can play WR

Someone may take a chance

My b then. I just think of all things, this isn't the worst. Not that I agree, but we have plenty of other issues

It's just annoying because he could have gotten him as an analyst, etc and hired someone with more recruiting presence at QB. Canales didn't really care what he was doing just wanted on staff. Why not take a shot at Durden? FCS OCs have quite a bit of success making the jump lately

I was thinking "meh" for Canales, too, but how about this quote?

"During his career, Canales has coached five different quarterbacks that have earned All-America recognition."

That's pretty a pretty strong statement, IMO.

It's very interesting how Butch makes great hires at every position except on offense. Rock and Warren were fantastic additions to our coaching staff. I know he had a rough season, but Shoop was one of the biggest hires last season.

I understand Butch likes to have control over the offensive scheme so I did not expect a hotshot OC, but man it would have been nice to see him step outside of his comfort zone and snag an ace QB coach. A QB coach is not going to have that much of an impact on the offensive scheme. However, their ability to develop QBs would only make it easier to run Butch's scheme and be more successful. I do not want us to waste or under develop QD and JG's talent. I also have no idea how good of a recruiter Canales would be or what he could even sell to recruits, maybe bibles or Tupperware.

It concerns me that Butch would make this decision. It implies to me that he is still not adjusting or growing as a head coach and is going to continue making the same mistakes that have plagued the program and cost us wins. I do not like to see him going "safe" or hiring buddies. Tennessee should be going after the best of the best, not giving coaches third and fourth chances to prove themselves. We will just have to wait and see. I also have no idea how much instability with the AD situation limited Butch's choices.

Where is that from? And who are the QBs?

I agree with Coach G. Scott has been a good recruiter, but as others mentioned the verdict is still out on him. Since he is about to be our OC, I guess we will find out soon enough. It may be a blessing in disguise to have Scott as OC. He might be aggressive and be the change we need to get to the next level. After all, he wants to be a HC and success as Tennessee's OC would go a long way in making that a reality. Failure may sidetrack it for years.

Too early to judge Scott imo and without him there would be no Byrd even if we misuse him.

Both great hires but that's 2 out of 5/6 offensive positions. Z next in line. Current OL coach is awful but i think Wells will be a nice upgrade there on field and off in recruiting. I hope I am wrong but likely whiffed at QB coach. We need all the top recruiters we can get right now as competition is fierce.

I'm not sure who the five AA QBs are - probably Rivers, don't know who else.

Thanks. That is promising, but other then Rivers I cannot track down 5 AA QBs either. It said at Arizona he coached the QB up to honorable mention AA. I could see the USF QB being an AA since he is the Big East career total yards leader. I do not see anybody at NT being an AA QB.

Let's call it yall. Next season is off, we already lost, our QBs are dead in the water. Butch is already drinking Jim Beam in a gutter and our administration is hiring Fulmer for AD/HC/ Football leader until his death

I don't know if you are really new here or just here under a new name, so I'm going to say this as if you are new here.

This is the RF...most of us here have been having these same conversations or similar for years now. Sometimes one side are the good guys, other times the other side are the good guys. Through all of that time, I can honestly say, I bet there aren't more than two or three (five tops) people in the RF that I wouldn't sit and have a beer with and laugh about the conversations we have here. Most here are good people and the very few that I personally deem not worthy (which makes it so) are probably better people in person than what we attribute them as being because of their ignorance on here. Then there is Catbone. He's Catbone, but he's our Catbone. He's the child we love at home, but never let walk near us in public.

Then there are the FF'ers that stumble over here from time to time. I'll not speak of them...cause they're stupid.

Probably academic all Americans lol otherwise why not name them?

Nah he had at least one kid one season at NT that he really good stats and was at least all conference.

Pretty sure one of his guys at Arizona was like freshman all American or something like that one year.

If you go back and look at his QBs, he has had some guys with good stats. It's never translated into success for his teams and he's had some bad ones too, though.

Let's change the pace. It's obvious we're not thrilled with this hire. So if you could have had anybody for QB coach who would you have picked?

You know, it really doesn't matter if we like the hire or not. If it's Canales then so be it. Gotta see how he develops our QBS, especially JG. With that talent, I hope it doesn't go to waste.

As someone that stumbles in here daily (if not hourly), I prefer "intellectually challenged". Makes me feel more important.
