TIFWIW, but I heard Weinke's interview was pretty much a disaster.

He had the gall to try to suggest some tweaks to the current approach with QBs and never once said "Yes sir, whatever you say, boss!"

"Bro, I ran 6 training sessions with Cam Newton in the Lock out year, i won the heisman. I know what I'm doing!"

Just feels like Butch hired a slam dunk on defense then turned around and hired a giant dud on offense. Much better options available and he went with an old friend

CAnales is the experienced choice and the safe one.

I want a coach that has a higher ceiling as Canales experience shows little success but maybe it works out.

Debord was old friend.

Statistically one of best offenes in UT history.

Of course, this is Butch Jones offense anyway. Scott plays a more important role than QB coach.

But you gloomed on the "RB coach" narrative, huh? :) Also ASSISTANT HC at his alma mater and would have expanded his role no doubt...no need for apologies, no one's hanging on your judgement. :hi:

Well, that was a joke. But AHC titles mean next to nothing.

But hey, here we are again. Very little regard for each other, and a post full of emojis. All is right with the world despite Canales.

Yes, but most of these anecdotes are from children disrespecting adults. That is not something to be proud of. Even, if they are blatantly incompetent (which they often are).

I have always respected authority and this guy gave our point guard a tech with a game tied prior to this when we had come back from an eleven point deficit and only 7 seconds left and we had the ball and called timeout. Then he proceeded to talk to our guard and other player about them to quit talking so much to each other. Our guy said i will stop if he does and the ref called the tech on him and decided the game. After the game he let the other team beat the heck out of us with punches ect..........and I got the double techs by him, it was reviewed and he was removed from ever calling one of our games again. He did not deserve respect. Other refs we had, we had a great relationship with. They were funny and called the game fair and knew how to do their job.

This will not be straw ...
there are way bigger issues than QB coach hire in year 4

I probably should have worded better. I mean these changes as a whole work, or it doesn't matter. Scott, Canales, Warren, even Shoop from last year.

To clarify I prefer O'Connell.

I'd have preferred he interviewed a pool of guys consisting of more than one FCS guy, a few NFL guys with enough years of experience to count on one hand, and then the guy he was obviously going to hire the whole time.

THIS is why we needed to hire Blackburn in before the end of 2016. Butch was never going to consider any move other than Scott/Canales. His offensive staff search this year has been one of the most disingenuous things I've ever seen.

I don't mind him bringing in his own guys, really. I get it's a vital year for him and a huge shakeup on offense is probably not a great idea. But by conducting this coaching search the way he has, without interviewing any heralded P5 OCs or QB coaches, Butch has done himself and his players a great disservice.

At least bring in some real candidates to go along with your guy instead of a bunch of guys with little real interest/experience in CFB coaching.

I agree Debord was fine, solid B hire. Could have been much better tho

Matt Canada really wanted to coach here. Now he's getting paid 1.5 million per year at LSU. We could've had him for a bargain. And in a year where Butch still had enough equity with fans to spend a half season or so going through the growing pains of a new offense.

That's one thing that kills me with Butch and his offensive staff hires. He can usually identify a safe B option. But he doesn't seem to have the instinct to pull the trigger on A or A+ guys (seemingly out of fear of taking a few steps back before moving forward or simply not wanting to adjust his scheme).

See:

Mahoney and Pittman (though Mahoney is probably worse than a B)
Azzani and Tee
Debord and Canada

You do realize that an actual full time QB coach is more than we had previously. I'm also pretty sure you were a Sheridan fan in the past....

No was not a Sheridan fan. He was ok. I don't really see the upgrade from him here to be honest besides that Canales worked with Scott. Ole miss about to be on NCAA probation and can hire better offensive coaches than we can. Butch has known Debord retiring for awhile and he can only come up with this.

My b then. I just think of all things, this isn't the worst. Not that I agree, but we have plenty of other issues

Dude won't be drafted...because of his passing..I love Dobbs but its true

I wouldn't say it's a foregone conclusion that he won't be drafted. I've seen much worse players get drafted in rounds 6-7. You're getting a proven QB, dynamic athlete, good mind. It's worth a shot even if you hope he can play WR

Let's call it yall. Next season is off, we already lost, our QBs are dead in the water. Butch is already drinking Jim Beam in a gutter and our administration is hiring Fulmer for AD/HC/ Football leader until his death
