A lower level program isn't gonna pay his buyout for him to leave.

At 6-6 the outcry for him to be fired will be overwhelming. Ticket sales dropping would easily be foreseen. I think he has to win the east or he's gone most likely. If he somehow goes 10-2 without winning the east I think he may stay. 9-3 and no east I think the admin would be hoping he can find a new home without firing him.

Hart was looking to kick the can down the road. He was brought in to fix our finances and clean up the AD. Firing Dooley would have put us further in the red. Our finances are in much better shape at this point.

Jones is gonna sink or swim in 2017.

And I think the majority would love to see him swim and keep swimming to championships.

Guess not. Not sure how else to take "starting to feel like Florida did last year." Maybe convey your meaning better?

Nope first time in a long time but it's beginning to feel like how I felt about Florida. We won't beat them until we beat them... Oh yeah we beat Florida this year didn't we?

There! Now we can all be friends! :huggy:

Read the sentence after that one

So your guts actual prediction isn't "I'm starting to think we beat Alabama" and "Felt the same way about Florida" but "we won't beat them till we beat them?"

You might need to take some Pepto Bismol.

If we don't have a mobile QB that can make the throws when necessary, you just may be right.

I can't believe people think it's crazy to say that a team losing its starting QB, RB, WR, best DE in 30+ years, LB and CB - on top of many depth players - is going to be one game worse than the previous year.

FWIW I said 7-5 a month ago for that very reason. The loss of Wiesman is also important since he could play both C and G at a good level as well as Vereen and Lewis at DE. Nothing has happened to change my mind to this point. But we don't know who the new staff will be. If Shoop is able to Shoop, it could be better.

If we are fihr Butch right? Its all his fault!

The OL will be better. I'm worried the DL will take a step back though, which is scary considering where they were.

Heading into Year 5 there are really no excuses left. It's a tough conference. Finishing mid pack in recruiting leads to what we have seen.

Yep, but apparently I'm crazy for thinking that at this point we should have legitimate depth to step up into these vacant spots. I'm not really worried about any of the offensive position groups, but I feel the exact opposite about all levels of the defense.

The team regressed this year. Much more undisciplined and lacluster than last year. There were times when they looked lost on the field. Take at least 6 years? Ok 2017 is year 5 and here you are saying that 8-4 is perfectly acceptable. Its this type of thinking thats just sad. So, 8-4 is acceptable? Lets explore that a little. Alabama is a given loss, we know that. I think LSU beats us as well. That leaves 2 more losses. Now lets say this year goes like 2016, we find a miracle to beat UGA and UF in the same season. Yet lose 2 to either UK, Mizzou or SC and Vandy again, would that be acceptable? Would you be fine with losses to Alabama, LSU, SOuth Carolina and Vandy?

We are losing players yes, but every other team is as well. If Butch is a good coach and has done his job, then we shouldnt see that much, if any drop off. Nobody with a functioning brain is expecting NCs with Tennessee iunder Butch Jones. But playing for and winning the East title should be expected. But that hasnt happened.
There were definitely times when the team looked disorganized and lackluster. I laid much of that to injuries, and the team having to play with 3rd and 4th string players. And there was definitely a coaching problem with the defense. The secondary was a mess. That being said, winning the East was a realistic expectation and that was a failure. Winning the SEC was not nor was it ever a realistic expectation.

Was I disappointed in the season? Definitely. But I think the coaching staff can and will be rebuilt. Then we will see if the program can move forward under CBJ. If he picks a staff that can't get the job done, then he should be fired. However, any firing should be based on not realizing acheiving expectations.

While making predictions for next season, seems like some are assuming that, not only will UT have a worse year on the field, but other teams will improve. JMO, but there are way to many variables that are yet TBD for most UT opponents in 2017.

Butch should absolutely be judged based on the product on the field not recruiting classes and especially when the East is as weak as it is.

Also, I'm not buying the lame duck hire garbage is leading to the beginning of the end for Butch for several reasons.

The roster we have can win the east next year if one our QB's turns out as good as we hope.

I agree. The post I was responding to was implying that we shouldn't blame Butch if we take a step back. I was just saying that player turnover doesn't give a head coach a free pass in a disappointing year because it's his job to build depth.
