As for the lame duck definition I'd encourage you to buy a new dictionary. But I'll agree that we shouldn't use the term lame duck as it is typically in reference to a political office rather than a head coach position. Buy for the sake of argument, lame duck is convenient and demonstrates the point.

Many assumptions and opinion in your post which is fine, that is what a message board is for. I would suggest you look up the origin of lame duck as it suggests one is crippled or hindered in some way from making decisions or controlling their own outcome. My opinion is that is not the case with CBJ.

Has to be Kelly to CAL right? And probably a real reason why Helfrich fell through. It's a no brainer for both sides. He doesn't like heavy media presence and just wants to coach. He can take a lower pay for him and Hef due to buyout for first few years while he makes them money to catch up and pay him on backend

What money they need? Kelly has 18 millions coming his way and Helfrich 11 million all in buyouts. They can load up an back loaded contract easily for that combo.

Chip Kelly has active buyouts from two NFL teams. Of course there will be some offset between the two and any new gig, but I don't think Chip will starve if he coaches for free the next couple of years.

You don't necessarily make the hire mid season. It just moves up your timeline. Instead of firing the first week of December, you fire in the middle of the season and start vetting and interviewing. Saves a month.

I think you are assuming that their agents will just let them coach for nothing. I would expect both of them combined to request 5-7 mill a year or what the going rate is, their is always more money to be made in this profession now. I just don't see them being philanthropic, but I could be wrong.

Just depends. If they are indeed a package deal and want to coach in 2017, this may be their only shot.

Just don't see how they afford him unless they've got some new boosters. He could have any open job in the country next year, but it sure looks like they'll try, firing their coach so long after the season.

You are still looking at coaches that currently have gigs at that point...

Depending on how the buyouts are structured, they could essentially cap his income. For an easy example that is probably nowhere near factual, if he was to get the NFL buyout-not taking into account it is across two teams- of 5 million per year, and Cal paid him 2 million, he would still get 5 million- 2 from Cal and 3 from the NFL teams. Where the money comes from probably makes no difference to him. So Nash is right, he could take it now and worry about getting a better job or more income from Cal in 2-3 years without having given up a cent.

Likely a lot more moving parts than that though.

Ya, coaches receiving buyouts just don't take a paycut, at least not historically. I'd love for Kelly to go to Cal but I think they'll need to pony up his full market value; so he sits out this year IMO, then has his pick of openings next year. This close to NSD it would be rough starting a new college gig coming from the pros where you don't have any connections to recruits.

Something I just noticed that may have already been discussed. Shannon Reid is not only an EE but he's also over 19 years old already. Crosby is also almost 19 too.

That's why Helfrich and holdovers from Oregon would make a ton of sense to join him there- probably similar recruiting circles as Oregon.

That said, I'd rather Chip be available if a move is made next year too.

You missed my point. I never said Georgia was a powerhouse. But I think Alabama, Ohio St, Georgia, Florida, and a few other schools out there have admins that really care about football more than our admin does. Why else would Georgia let a coach with zero recruiting problems, and an excellent status in the coaching community go? He averaged close to ten wins a season. How many coaches are doing that? There fans and admin wanted more. They deserved more SEC east crowns then they got with the talent they had. Yes Georgia is no powerhouse but hey deserve to be on this list. There is no way in the world our admin fires a coach or ask him to move on if he had the record of CMR.

How bad cal fans going to feel if chips only reason for not going is they just switched from Nike to under armour? I would be furious already at the move already let alone costing you a top 10 coach.

Bama, LSU and one of UGA/UF. Go to Citrus bowl and win to go 10-3. Solid yr, good enough for Butch to get another yr since we play most of the yr with a TD QB.
