Y'all thinking Butch is here just one more year is wrong IMO. Barring a total collapse next year where we miss a bowl, he gets at least one more year. Remember this is about money and the university will not pay a buyout until it is blatantly obvious that they'll lose more money in revenue than the buyout. 6-6 he's here in 2018.

I could be wrong but I don't think his buyout matters as much as we think. I remember LWS saying just that not too long ago.

New chancellor, new AD coming in, I think Butch has to win the East this fall to be around any longer, it's year 5. 10 reg season wins but somehow miss ATL and he's back but less than 9 wins and he's gone no doubt.

8-4 or 7-5 in year 5 would bring too much heat from fans and press and the program/roster is in good enough shape now to attract elite coaches.

Calling CBJ a lame duck at this point is absolutely ridiculous. He has every opportunity to extend his tenure next year by having a good season and winning the east. He has the talent to compete, and the upcoming coaching changes could make this staff stronger, especially on the defensive side. The players still seem to be playing hard for their coach, and I think they will next year as well.

Year 5 says hi?

6-6 he can't find a job to buy him out. Just like this year at 8-4. Couldn't find a suitor. He's gonna get fired or he's gonna win enough to get an extension.

Dooley begged Hart to fire him after the KY loss and he refused. Dooley had already quit and Hart kept him. Also, remember what I said, it's a money decision. If Butch were to go 3-9 and people still bought tickets, they'd keep him until people stopped. Same with Dooley, 60k in the stands.

Also, remember the old adage, it's easier to get a job when you have a job. He may not get that P5 offer but I'm sure a lower level program would take a chance on him.

I think we do slightly better next season than 6-6 but I see no way he's not here in 2018.

While hiring Scott as OC does not give me a warm fuzzy feeling, I am sure Jones will not allow anyone to make very many tweaks to his offensive system. If Scott did have a bit of input this year he may be as good as it is going to get.

Canales scares me. He has coached QBs a lot, and at several different locations. This lends the experience that Jones will be looking for. I feel like he very well may be the hire for QB coach. When you see though that the North Texas AD told him he could not come back there in any capacity it raises a red flag for me. At one point the players there loved him and lobbied on his behalf for North Texas to keep him earlier in his tenure there. Why has his career seemed to spiral downward? Why is he now at the school he played for? Are they one of the few that want him now? If North Texas told him he could not come back does Tennessee want to be the path back to a better job? This is so Tennessee.

He was an interim HC of a team that had fallen apart. He didn't get the permanent spot and the new coach didn't keep him. About the extent of the science here. :boredom:

Yall are giving up on Uncle Rico too soon. He's a dark horse I know, but he used to be able to throw a football a quarter mile!

Should team up well with our new S&C coach:

Notice the responses above mine. They weren't really bad mouthing him. Could be they are newer members, can't see on mobile.

Gotcha. I think most respect Matt for what he brings. Good or bad.

Agreed. The lame duck bs is foolish talk.

Do we know what the buyout drops to next season?

A lower level program isn't gonna pay his buyout for him to leave.

At 6-6 the outcry for him to be fired will be overwhelming. Ticket sales dropping would easily be foreseen. I think he has to win the east or he's gone most likely. If he somehow goes 10-2 without winning the east I think he may stay. 9-3 and no east I think the admin would be hoping he can find a new home without firing him.

Hart was looking to kick the can down the road. He was brought in to fix our finances and clean up the AD. Firing Dooley would have put us further in the red. Our finances are in much better shape at this point.

Jones is gonna sink or swim in 2017.

Truth. 9 wins will be the problem. If he only wins 9 and does not win the East? I think he is kept at that point, unless he makes an obvious gaff to lose another game to Vanderbilt. Many fans will not be happy though if he only wins 9 and fails to win the East. Maybe wins over Florida 2 years in a row could save him. He just has not had that one great year that lets you know he could be the guy. And what makes it worse is he did have his chances to have that great year 2 years in a row now.

You could be right, Ron but I don't think the administration looks at athletics the same as they used to. It's a necessary evil to them. They want to see profits and that's the bottom line. Until the Butch's performance affects the bottom line significantly, he's not going anywhere. Even then there will be a delay from when that happens to if/when he is fired.

I can very well see a scenario where we win 6 or 7 games and Guarantano starts coming into his own and the fans say, "Next year is the year". Meanwhile GA is surging and will most likely be looking down at us and FL for the foreseeable future.

Hypothetically, Butch doesn't want to be here, the AD doesn't want him here, buyouts get negotiated.

At 6-6 he's getting fired. Nobody negotiates a buyout to hire away a 6-6 guy.

Also, to an earlier point you made...how many fans do you think are gonna be in the stands when a 6 win Tennessee team is taking on Vandy at 9pm on the SECN in late November?

Tennessee is not what it used to be. As a fan how can we support this type of admin? Empty seats two years in a row? Would that get their attention? It is sad that fan apathy has to set in to get them to care. We are no longer like Georgia, Alabama, LSU, etc. Sports does not matter here. There used to be an all sports trophy and if Tennessee didn't win it we were at least near the top in the standings. In the last ten years I bet we would not be in the top half of the SEC. That tells us all we need to know about how much admin at Tennessee cares about sports.

If he goes 6-6 in 2017, ticket sales will be terrible in 2018. They'd have to let him go

We are coming off our best back to back seasons in a decade.
Butch is anything but a lame duck coach.
A lame duck coach is one who IS going to be fired or HAS been fired.
Butch needs to take the next step, yes. Could he be fired, of course.
The are really only a very few coaches in today's college football world that are truly safe from any type bad season. So if Butch is a lame duck then so are every other SEC coach save ONE.

I think recruiting has got to factor in as well. 9-3 and no east, but a top 5 class and he's good to go. Less than 9 wins and a another class like the current one and things are getting warmer.
