Is recruiting dead right now? Haven't seen any news, no info on big players that were after other than Jeff Thomas. Anything newsworthy?

I posted updates on 5 players, in their respective threads, that 247 feels UT should keep an eye on during January while they make their final visits. Believe it was, Ray, Corker, Conliffe, Sterling, and one other (maybe Jordan).

Gotta hope Latrell Williams is healthy and can be that guy. He has the speed but does he have the hands and route running ability.

Anybody catch the radio segment Swain is referring to?

In this case, I think "no leadership" is being blown out of proportion. Hart doesn't ultimately have much of a say on who stays and who goes since he won't be here, but that doesn't mean he's sitting on his rear end at home in front of the fire because he's a lame duck. Moreover, CBJ knows what he can and cannot do. CBJ is picking who he wants for these spots, not the AD.

A poster or two have suggested that CBJ may have been grooming Scott for the OC position. If this was by chance the case, I wonder if he may have been given the opportunity to call a few plays while sitting in the booth next to DeBord?

Butch has known Debord was leaving even if he expected it to be to retire instead of Indiana OC. So I think there prob was a good chance butch had some plan going on to test internal candidates. Butch is never unprepared for a foreseen situation. The good thing about Butch is that he makes everything a group effort whether it be recruiting or game planning. So it's not just Debord installing plays for the week it's all the staff

Tyler Byrd could also transition into more of a deep threat next year. He definitely has the wheels.

He would have been this year if we used middle of field more. Dobbs hit him on a good one in AM game and Dormady hit him on a similar play. I never have understood our lack of spacing. It got better this year but still needs improvement

In addition to my post above, Callahan also noted the following:

I think it's definitely going to be a busier January than a lot of people expected in terms of visits and potential additions. These definitely are not the only five to watch. Honestly, I had a tough time picking just five. To me, though, these are five who will be pretty important in determining how Tennessee will finish its class.

By "call better plays" I assumed he meant stop being so predictable in what you are going to call. That's not an oversimplification. It's simply what needs to be done. Regardless of who the play caller is. We had a very similar problem with our last OC. He seemed to really enjoy calling jet sweeps. Other teams really enjoyed us running them all the time too, because they were ready for it.

I was never trying to convince you to differ your opinion. As I stated in my post, I was just curious as to why you felt differently. What else you thought needed to be changed besides what Newt had said, because I felt he was pretty spot on in his remark. Wasn't intended to turn in to a snarkfest. :hi:

Well, like I said, he's not wrong. To me, it was obviously a generality a step below "the next OC needs to score more points." His previous post had mentioned how people were oversimplifying changes in offensive philosophies, terminologies, etc. It struck me as ironic how he called people out (not strongly) for oversimplification of more specific points, then said that all we need to do is call better plays. Again, I'm pretty sure that's what every OC strives for, so to me, it's an oversimplification.

Guys I can hear you...

Tony B. is making me feel a little more encouraged this morning:

"Tennessee is hiring Parker Search Firm. Right now, I believe this is window dressing. David Blackburn is highly thought of within the Parker Search Firm Infrastructure. There is a school of thought that David Blackburn is currently assisting Butch Jones in assembling his coaching staff. Is this possible? Sure it is... I'm going to lay one on you here. Parker Search Firm is going to come back and recommend that UT hire David Blackburn barring the unforeseen. Then again, this is Tennessee, so expect the unforeseen to rule the day."

SIAP

That would be nice. I did a little research on the Parker Search Firm. With as many as they do, they will not always be successful, but they have caught some criticism in the last few years.

The NCAA is a client, and Emmert had used them while president of Washington. They ultimately recommended Emmert to the NCAA. They help UT land Cheek, Dooley, Martin, and Dave Hart. They had recommended Hart to at least one other school.

They are based in Atlanta and full of UGA grads. I wonder if that helped us land Dooley:ermm:

Fair enough.

And bias. LA Vol clearly knows somebody, and he is reflecting that person's opinion. May be spot on correct, but it's biased. If Bev hires the next Mike H, then heck yeah, break out the mattresses. But if she bypassed Blackburn to get someone even better, then give her credit. If LA Vol's connection is a Blackburn guy, either scenario is bad for them, but one is actually better for UT.

I personally hope it is Blackburn, but I'm going to reserve judgment until the hire is made.

I agree. I really like LAVol and his posts. He is on top of it. However, he interjected some opinions in the posts yesterday, whether they were his or someone else's.

Yeah, I don't think Parker has been a terribly successful partnership for UT. I'd be interested in knowing what the true nature of the relationship is.

Hypothetical question here - I know everybody wants someone to come in from the outside, but let's say that person was Larry Scott. Let's say he was currently at Miami (which he was), that he was a great recruiter with ties to Florida (which he is), that he has some coaching experience - head coaching even (which he does), and that players love him (which we know they do) - would we all be a lot more excited about him? To me the answer is yes...

I think the lack of playcalling experience would still be called into question.

In this hypothetical, I actually feel better about his current situation, having been here and had an impact on the current offense.

I'd never be excited about bringing in an OC who has never called plays. Hasn't even been a QB to at least call plays in the huddle.

It appears that UT has used them for a while. One article I read about them specifically mentioned these hires and how UT had used them for years. I decided to look them up, and a majority of their employees are UGA grads with business degrees. There are some former athletes and one former coach. There is one UT grad, but most are fairly young except for Parker and the President.
