No clue. Contrary to those who have cast me into the "it'll all work out" pumper role, I'm not making predictions, I'm just pushing back against the illogical hand wringing that says she can't get it right because she would like to see UT become academically relevant. She may well stink it up and she may well be completely out of her depth, but up to this point, I don't think there is enough established truth to make that call.

There are those is business who believe in "hire slowly, fire quickly". If you do the prior, you tend to do less of the latter. Last time I checked, we actually still had an AD, so we are trying to fill a position that isn't actually open yet.

And for the record: Pessimists are the "half empty" guys and optimists are the "half full", right? Well, I'm an engineer, and engineers are generally neither. We're more the "glass is twice the size it needs to be" group. I refer to them as pragmatists, and I happen to be a positive leaning, forward thinking, pragmatist. Is that a pumper? Compared to some of the "glass is half empty, cracked, and leaking through a hole in the bottom" crowd, then perhaps. I've just lived long enough to realize that it costs me nothing to focus on the more positive outcome, and it makes me happier to do so.

I understand your point. We don't know yet how she will turn out so no sense in worrying about it yet. It's hard to separate rumor, from fact, from conjecture on message boards.

I almost always lean to the positive side, always optimistic. I guess the last few years I have completely lost any faith I had that the higher ups in the university would make good decisions, or are even capable of making good decisions. I always get my hopes up for a "best case scenario" and more often than not we've been getting the opposite of that. Very frustrating.

Offense will be fine. JG, Jennings and Kelly will be great, young receivers will be fine. We need a deep threat to replace Malone tho. Not sure if JJ is a deep route guy like Malone was. Maybe Brandon Johnson will be that guy

I read a couple of posts the other day from Tony and immediately thought to myself that it was someone else typing under Tony's account. It was all typed in standard size black font and made sense. In no way sounded like a 12 year old was trying to sound grown up.

Well according to some, Vol74 is two different people, so nothing would surprise me.

More important than OC is QB coach and OL coach. That will decide the direction of our offense under guarantano. That and bringing in shoop's guys should be the only things we really worry about

And we'll see more deep balls. In the little playing time Dormady saw, he threw a deep ball almost immediately. I'm not convinced that Debord was the reason for few deep balls.

Reminds of stark difference when Sims was benched for Bray. You would think there were two completely different OCs. I think Bray actually completed fewer passes, but they were mostly downfield. Went from around 35% third down conversions to about 60% third down conversions because Bray could complete a pass beyond the line of scrimmage, whereas Simms would frequently end up checking down to a 2 yard gain when we needed 7.

Jordan Murphy will be our deep threat...but will he catch fire his first year or his second?

And bias. LA Vol clearly knows somebody, and he is reflecting that person's opinion. May be spot on correct, but it's biased. If Bev hires the next Mike H, then heck yeah, break out the mattresses. But if she bypassed Blackburn to get someone even better, then give her credit. If LA Vol's connection is a Blackburn guy, either scenario is bad for them, but one is actually better for UT.

I personally hope it is Blackburn, but I'm going to reserve judgment until the hire is made.

Tried entering the OC discussion over on the FF and its like swimming in a swimming pool full of Baby Ruths...if they weren't really Baby Ruths.

A poster or two have suggested that CBJ may have been grooming Scott for the OC position. If this was by chance the case, I wonder if he may have been given the opportunity to call a few plays while sitting in the booth next to DeBord?

I stepped over there yesterday and most of them seemed more interested in bashing Butch than having a real discussion about possible OC's.

If 2017 is anything like 2016, it will be the defense that could cost CBJ his job, not the offense.

First and foremost, you have to stop the run. DT's have to stay healthy. LB's have to make plays.

Love Kirkland, but if we were to ever run a conventional 4-3, he should be on the outside. Most of his tackles at the line of scrimmage were on the outside. He has great pursuit. However, most of his tackles when the ball was run between the tackles were 8-10 yards down the field. We need an inside LB who can step into the gaps and make the plays at or near the line of scrimmage.

That, and of course, we all know the DB play MUST improve.

Pretty sure DK will be fine inside and any of his struggles stemmed from the ankle injury. He looked light years better in the bowl game.

If you are a good leader you groom the person below you to take your job. I hope that Debo and Butch were grooming all of their assistant coaches to move up.

I feel like there was so much talk about Callaway during last spring and summer that he was already the best on the team at tracking the long ball. Of course, that could have just been VQ doing their annual offseason praise for every player on the team. But hopefully he can step in and make some plays down the field. Johnson seems more like a sure-handed possession receiver, IMO.

Anybody catch the radio segment Swain is referring to?

@SwainEvent: Great segment of radio with @TonyBasilio and @JohnBrice247. Tons of info. Tons of honest truth. Tons of passion.

@JohnBrice247: Thanks much, man. This fan base deserves better than CBJ out making critical moves w/o no clear leadership map.

@SwainEvent: Absolutely! Not fair to him. Not fair to fanbase and more importantly not fair to the players.

Many on here want Butch the bring in a new guy and allow him to run a new offense because they seem to think that Butch's isn't cutting it. I was pointing out that there are four guys that are in the top 10 in points scored at UT. I think we just need someone to make minor tweaks and keep running Butch's offense. I'm much more interested to see the QB coach and the changes to the defensive staff. Especially DBs. Our DBs were awful this year. It seemed like they were coached to not turn their heads because it almost seemed that they refused to do it. It was awful.

This! I will be happy when we find out about what positions will be changed on the defensive side, this is where we can gain the most towards being an elite team. Offense, I think anyway, will be fine..

These are excellent points. Play calling could have been more aggressive than we realize.

I wondered the same thing. I hope so. Even though I like coach Scott and wouldn't hate the hire, it sure does make me nervous to think someone who has never called plays is taking over.

I'm pretty much with you on this.

As for the bolded...something has got to change there. I mean it's not like this simple fact can be hidden or explained away. It could be seen by anyone watching that our DB's were not turning their heads. How do you explain that without making yourself look bad? You can't. Either you recruited idiots that can't be coached to do it or the coaches either 1. coached them to do that or 2. didn't coach them at all. I say "at all", because it would seem that one of the most basic/fundamental parts of coaching a DB would be to teach them to turn their head.

Is recruiting dead right now? Haven't seen any news, no info on big players that were after other than Jeff Thomas. Anything newsworthy?

Its all about the visits baby. No one has a list up yet so I guess we will have to take it week by week
