Yes we did. But after 6 years of a dumpster fire followed by two middle of the road (for UT) seasons, it was still the "right" decision according to many.

The OP makes a thoughtful point about University leadership. Remember, it's a State government controlled institution. Therefore, you can expect leeches to flood leadership positions and squat themselves there. If it's in a similar state of disarray, as witnessed from 2008 forward. Maybe "staying put" with a 9-4 staff aint' so bad. At least until we have some competence in charge of the zoo.

I don't like it either. But a wise and seasoned institutional investor once said about stocks ... "Don't kid yourself, it can go to zero"!

This offseason is going to be soooo looong.

I sure wish it was mid August already.

1 simple FACT that everyone better LEARN fast is this...

buTch simply IS about as good as we're going to get simply because of the UT Admin.

UT Admin will NEVER ever go out and spend the kind of $$$$ it will take to get a nick saTan kind of coach and recruiter even if a coach like that is even on the planet!

Get rid of buTch and the ONLY thing we'll get is another cheap $$$ mid level coach to hope and pray we somehow hit the jackpot.

If we hit the jackpot the UT Admin then will NOT pay him the top $$$ to keep him so some other school will buy him away from us.

The same useless UT Admin that probably WILL completely screw up our new AD hire so don't be surprised when it happens.

I really HATE to try to explain facts here on VN because it makes me act like a negative minded moron and I'm always a optomist.

It took Dabo 15 years to build up Clemson to where they finally are now but in this instant gratification world we live in now we'll never see our beloved Vols make it to the National Championship game like Clemson has because no good coach will get paid enough $$$ to come here and sure doesn't want a 4 or 5 year short rope to destroy his coaching career.

Be VERY careful what you hope for, you just might get it.

Most of the same people whining now are the same people that helped Fulmer get kicked out and now it's almost a decade of misery and barely making any Bowl games.

Constant coaching changes normally leads to constant bottom tier wins and Bowls.

I think AD Hart gave buTch a longer contract and a BIG $$$$ buyout just so it would force us to give him 2 or 3 more years to try to get us built back up if possible.

I also think AD Hart is retiring because he's sick and tired of the constant bi*ching and whining of our Tennessee fanbase that is mostly NOT well educated on anything it really takes to build up a solid sports program.

Idiots think it's easy to build up a Championship level football Team but the professional coaches will tell you it's hard, VERY hard and it takes time and LOTS of $$$ to get it done the 1st time and much harder to remain at that level consistently.

Another fact is that exactly nobody really knows for certain if buTch is the guy that can keep building us up like Dabo did at Clemson or not but everyone sure likes to give their UNprofessionsl opinions which normally smell like a (_)_)!

What's a done deal now? I've not predicted anything. I've given my opinion....Which is much different than what happened four-plus years ago.

Things changed behind the scenes from what I was told by a name you, and everybody else here would know. I had no control over it. I apologized, stayed off the board for over a year, and yet, ocassionaly, a blowhard like you still loves to bring it up...typically because you've got nothing else of value to say.

Move on little man....I did. Or at least make sure you are NEVER-EVER wrong.

Old people are capable of whining too.

If the program is producing quality young men, e.g. Dobbs, then more power to them. That is MUCH more important than wins. Sure you won't feel as big bragging to your friends about TN winning the SEC East but it is a lot better for the "student" athletes.

And some realized early issues that wouldn't and didn't hold up through the a season where UT had complete control of the east after GA. That got confused in some cases and the bat signal was sent out by several.

You can be happy with 5-0 and realize issues that have to be fixed. I would imagine (and hope) that the staff had some of the same questions and concerns when they were breaking down the tape while being glad they were able to dodge those to an early 5-0 record.

Football is not what it used to be. Better players leave earlier, you can't build a program (I know Bama gets all 5* recruits going to the NFL). The number of quality players nationwide has increased dramatically. If you play in the SEC you WILL have losses and injuries (do you want to be Western Michigan?). Coaches change every two years. The same idiots wanted Fulmer gone (ten years of misery). Once great teams flounder, ND, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Auburn, USC, OK, Michigan, Texas, on and on.

How did it take Dabo 15 years to build up Clemson? He's been there 9 years. He also won 10 regular season games in year 4.

Everyone keeps bringing up Chip Kelley's name but he HATES recruiting. I live in the PNW and it was a poorly kept secret that he was a great coach but didn't like to do recruit. UofO didn't have highly rated classes (top 10) but did a lot with their guys and that is the difference, I believe, he brings and something we need to improve on.

Yeah... those with "football IQ" are folks like you... willing to watch an underperforming coach continue underperforming because you're afraid of making changes.... like every other top tier football program has done en route to becoming successful.

Here's some "football IQ" for you. UT stank it up early in the season even before the injuries. If Dobbs had not bailed the Vols out with individual effort on broken plays... It is likely UT would have dropped a couple more games including ASU. The OL in year 4 of Jones' tenure still does not consistently perform at an SEC level. Injuries have been a 3 year problem and Jones has until now pretended it was nothing more than "bad luck".

Recruiting has been a struggle in '17 and NOT because of negative fans. Jones came in making implicit and explicit promises.... that didn't come true. Recruits have taken notice. Now UT is competing with WKU for 2* players rather than Bama for 5* players.

The "poison" to the program is LOSING... and especially games like Vandy and USCe that SHOULD HAVE BEEN BLOWOUT WINS. the "poison" is Jones failed promises and underperformance over the past 4 years. Negativity amongst fans is a result... not a cause.
