I think you're forgetting, Bruin. People were pretty upset that we hired a retired swim coach.

You know darn well this board wasn't upset over the first few days when Debords name first surfaced. The entire process took so long that shortly after his name was mentioned the rationalization begin with "he is just here to groom CZA for a few years".

That narrative 100% was accepted here.

Not a single poster embraced the DeBord hire. It was generally, "What the....?" Followed by either despair, insults at a swim coach, or in the best case scenario, rationalizing he had coached Tom Brady and had some success at Michigan

How long did that last?

It lasted a few days after his name surfaced. By the time the hire which was weeks later was officially made he was accepted here under the rationalization I have posted.

I was probably one of the ones trying to rationalize it at the time. But now that we've seen it, I think we could have done a lot better.

I would more or less call it accepting the inevitable. My attitude was, well he hired Debord, so time to get onboard and support him.

I'll have the same reaction if he goes with an internal hire, who has no real OC experience.

For me, this OC hire is probably one of the most challenging I've see in a while. There are just no "no-brainer" options out there. The ones who fit the QB development role don't have play calling experience. The ones who fit both roles well, as just not viable candidates. For example, Tee Martin is just not ever coming to the Vols. In fact, I would be shocked if he ever left California because of his wife's career. Jim Bob Cooter would be perfect, but he is already being mentioned as a future NFL head coach. Just don't believe that college coaching is an option for him unless it is as a head coach. Helfrich just doesn't seem to be a good fit for the range of needs for the job, specifically play calling. Kelly is not one I would ever consider. My preferred candidate, LaFleur doesn't have play calling experience. On the surface, this hire would seem, but there are so many complicating factors. Throw on top that Jones wants to keep his basic offense in tack with some enhancements, finding the right candidate is tough.

I have a bad feeling that this OC hire is going to turn into the clusteryouknowwhat that leads Butch to the guillotine.

You know darn well this is an outright lie. There was a literal meltdown when he was hired, followed by an eventual acceptance that what is done is done.

Just because you proposed it doesn't mean it was accepted, Bruin.

Probably means the opposite.

Butch is a good coach, but if he hires someone internally with no OC experience (1 year at WKU doesn't count) it will be more evidence that this is too big of a job for him, and that we've hit our ceiling.

Yep. When his name was first floated it was "WTF?" as time drug on and it became apparent he was the guy, there was a solid period of a half a week or so of meltdown and despair followed by most people giving in, reading all the comforting puff pieces from the media, and saying "oh well, he's our guy now, so we should support him and give him a fair shake"

Caught violating team rules on location last week, Dimarya Mixon was sent home as 247Sports first reported and neither dressed nor was allowed inside Nissan Stadium for the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl.

Mixon’s future with the program is, at best, murky.

Yikes. Could lose 5 DE's from our depth chart this year with Lewis & Vereen out of eligibility, Barnett going pro, plus McDaniel and now Mixon "murky". Looks like we need some more DE's in this class than we thought originally!

It doesn't really matter when Debord was accepted here but he was and the reasoning given was it was to groom CZA.

Now the question is if Jones hires within is it going to cza or scott.

He has no equity left. I support him, but I'm not all on on him anymore. If he makes a crap hire, and the offense struggles next year. He will be fired.

Yeah. Bruin might have made his move to Fantasyland a permanent thing. The Poolboy/Swim Coach comments flowed like the salmon of Capistrano.

Sucks too because Mixon could add depth at DT in a pinch as well.

Edit: and we know there will be snaps to be had for the taking in the Spring at both spots.

Yes posters quickly gave in to Debord just like they gave in to Butch after the Vandy game. This board is always going to give in to the company line and that is ok. The same will happen here if Scott or Azzanni is hired

Like the idea of adding the NC State guy over Fair, TBH. Longer track record and probably more comfort working with Shoop. Gotta let him choose the guys he wants to work with if we want him to have success.

As much as I would love Terry fair, I have to agree with this part. We NEED Shoop to find HIS guys, not VFL's. I want VFLs just as much as the next fan but I want Shoop to have full control of the Defensive side of the ball.
