Coffin...nail...done.
Debord threw Butch a lifeline by leaving, but he decided to tread water instead.
exactly.Anyone thinking he's going to hire someone to run a completely different offense is being ridiculous. It's what the HC knows and what he's recruited for
Don't know about you, but being in the shotgun on every single play drove me nuts. Even on the one yard line. Hope new OC has a few new wrinkles, and not the old man kind (even if he is an old man).
"Former Oregon coach Mark Helfrich visited Tennessee during a bowl practice, spawning rumors he might be the next OC at UT. But Helfrich was in Nashville to visit his former Oregon quarterback, Marcus Mariota, and is not considered a candidate for the UT vacancy."
Perhaps all of this Helfrich talk is simply pure BS ......
This entire thread is filled with NegaVol Eeyoredom.
"We'll never get a good Offensive Coordinator. No one wants to coach at Tennessee. Why would anyone want to come here? We're going to lose next season. No reason to bother."
I'm not a huge fan of Butchs style of offense but 2017 is make or break. It would be stupid to do a full overhaul of the offense at this point and the offense does work well if executed properly.
Odd thing is the O broke the records this season so perhaps ol Butchie's system is not so bad. Perhaps the problem was that Debord was not able to make proper in game adjustments to that system to make it even better when it was required? If so, CBJ may be correct that his basic system is fine but he needs better execution of it?

Exactly!
That's my take on it, as well. I don't understand why people are so down on "the scheme." Our problem for most of the season was execution, penalties, mental errors, big mistakes, etc. "The scheme" worked fine and we have the right talent to run it. It's utterly bizarre to me how everyone now hates Butch and all offensive problems are "Butch's fault", but somehow, the OC who came in to run his offense to mixed success, is the designer of "a record setting offense."
Helfrich would be the perfect person to run this offense. He's an innovator and was one of the major reasons for Chip Kelly's successful run at Oregon. Helfrich continued to do well at Oregon for a few years, but he's just not a good "CEO" type. In modern college football, a Head Coach needs to be a great CEO, whereas OCs and DCs are more like Managers. Helfrich doesn't have a lot of the "CEO-like" skills; he's more like a Manager. He knows Offense extraordinarily well, he's good with strategy and innovation, managing others, and mentoring people.
I'm really hoping we land Helfrich, because he'd be a home-run hire.
