I think some of you seriously misunderstand Butch

Not hiring a S/C coach immediately after having to replace Lawson for whatever reason. How many times did you hear it mentioned on VN this year how bad our OL was performing? It started at Appy St game. We lost Kerbyson and Crowder from team 119 and had developed Jones and Hall and with Richmond coming in there should not have been much of a drop-off in performance. Then consider a star DT who missed his senior year in HS and still waited until june to enroll and came in at least 40 lbs. overweight and way out of playing shape.
This is all very telling and the root of UT's problem. The players are not in shape, they are not motivated enough for whatever reason and they get blown off the ball on both sides at the line of scrimmage. We pay a HC a good salary IMO to notice these things or at least he and some assistants to take note and make changes. This lack of conditioning up front is what started the whole Hurd debacle and I'm certain it was a major contributor to the many injuries UT sustained. I hope I answered your question but realize this is just my opinion.

Not really a question but I think we are seeing many of the same issues. Some folks here want to blame someone under Jones as a means of defending him. When you get the same bad results for 3 years... the HC is fully responsible for not correcting or replacing his subordinate.

You're right, UT a top 10 program should just be happy with breaking records on offense and beating crappy teams in bowl games. Who needs SEC east titles or SEC titles let's just be OK with 8-9 win seasons and blowing games we have no business losing

where did i say i didn't want sec titles? i'm being realistic man. i'm 30 years old and i was a little kid when we won the title in 98. when have we been a *consistant* top 10 team in my lifetime?? can't you numbskulls realize that you can support the team AND the coach and still not be joyous about losing to usc and vandy. show me a coach right now that hasn't lost to a team he shouldn't have. it sucks, but it happens to all of them. saban has been on fire at bama but he's lost to inferior opponents at lsu and msu.

If we keep Jones, we will slide back into the Dooley days.

Someone posted a roster recently. If Jones' class this year does not improve then even if he is fired after this year his successor will have a pretty steep uphill climb trying to "rebuild" the roster.

When Dooley was fired it was common thought here that it would take 10 years to get back to Relevance. We are getting there faster than that. Why fire the head coach and start over now?

Common thought for who? I've been here through the whole thing and don't remember anyone arguing that here. There are programs all across college football that were elevated in less than 10 years that were NEVER relevant.

It simply DOES NOT take 10 year or even 5 years to "get back to relevance" if the right coach is hired.

Oh, burn. Typical of your crew to resort to personal attacks because your savior Butch Jones was questioned. Shocked.

It's all they have got at this point besides regurgitating a bunch of Jones' coach speak and wallowing in the Dooley years to try and prove how awesome their hero is.

They can't point to any titles, only have a handful of signature wins which looked more like flukes with each passing game, and bowl wins over the Big 10's equivalent of the SEC East to make their points as to how great a job Jones is doing.

welcome to volnation... where we regularly eat our own and are perpetually never happy with anything. where we have just set records on the offensive side of the ball and won our 3rd straight bowl game yet many posts on this thread alone of "butch sucks" "butch hired debord who both sucks" "will never win anything here". this idea of burning the place down every 4 years is so insane, i can't believe yall think any kind of continued success would be possible doing that. if ut keeps firing coaches like many of yall want, once the really big time hire comes around he won't touch ut with a 10ft pole. he won't because of the lack of support and loyalty shown by the administration who's trigger happy firing coaches due to delusional fans.

and then corey vereen's dad comes on here the other day and claims he's been a long time lurker of this site and just wanted to say thanks. all fine and dandy until you think of all the crap threads like this one that are just filled with so much hate and void of logic and constantly bashing players (dobbs can't hit broad side of barn) and coaches (butch sucks and will never win crap). and yall wanna tell me players and players parents aren't coming on here and seeing this sh*t? man, this site has gone full retard mode

I seldom listen to or agree with Finebaum but he summed up Jones' 6-7 years to build a program assertion correctly.

He called it absurd.

Not I was trying to show him how it felt to be insulted as he and others such as you do. Just read this thread and see who resorts to the most name calling. Buzz cut Jesus..savior?

When he stops regularly losing to teams he shouldn't lose to we'll talk.

Until then he's a career 8.7 wpy coach, who is in over his head in the SEC. The used car salesman justifications don't help his case, and just expose him as not big enough for this job.
I am driving to Tennessee to fist bump you right now

It's so much easier to tear down Coach Jones when he keeps putting his foot in his mouth but the man has IMPROVED the program since he's been here. People delight in tearing him down and while I admit we let 2 SEC east championships slip through our hand, where would we be with Dooley?

I'm just as upset as everyone else, but I will not buy into the fire Butch rhetoric, and pretend the sky is falling because each year we have progressed (except for this year with 2 bad losses) We don't have Saban, we don't have Urban, nor the idiot at Michigan, but what we do have is a man who gives his all for the orange and unlike most of the posters here, I donate 6-7k a year for my seats and tickets and he has my support.

Burn him down and make yourself feel better but let's see what your record would be as the head coach at UT given you're at the helm. EXACTLY.... F'n arm chairs. I played ball at a Div 1 AA school but my 1st love was always UT and will always be UT. As they said in the movie " born on the fourth of july" (also served in dessert storm, panama, and operation freedom) love it or leave it! Rebuttal?
Dooley is not the bar for success at UT. A lot of Butch's 'accomplishments' are amplified in light of Dooley's incompetence.

This is beyond weak.

It's a message board and it was a joke about the coach, hence the blue fonts. Wasn't a direct attack on you as I don't ever recall seeing you here but you chose to make it personal with me.

Pay me 4 million a season and I guarantee you that you'll be able to call me any name on Vol Nation you like. I'll be able to take it and I won't even feel the need to make a list of the name callers like Jones suggested he was going to do with the media earlier this season.

Well....if Butch Jones hires Helfrich giving him complete control of the offense and upgrades the OL coach, DB coach, S/C coach...it will show me he has FINALLY....

2-2 vs Vandy

1-3 vs Florida

2-2 vs Georgia

0-4 vs Bama

0-4 vs rest of West division

14-18 SEC record

Dropped in recruiting rankings

Not even in top 5 recruiting in the SEC

The writing is on the wall

Certainly W's are all that matter, but to count first two years as "normalcy" is just trying to justify an argument. If you want to say last two years are "fire-worthy", which I disagree with, then at least that's a valid argument.

Are you Jones? Did someone call you a name?

Jones signed a contract for a lot of money. Along with that contract goes the adoration or else the ire of fans. He knew it when he signed... and still signed.

Why do you get so emotional and take it so personal when someone makes up a name for Jones?

I agree....we have a very ill informed, run screaming with your hair on fire, fan base that was every created....I am constantly amused by the lack of knowledge and understand of basis fundamentals of running a D1 SEC level sports department....I mean seriously....it is mind-boggling (and I'm sure there's a great number of agitators and trollers amongst this group) that a fan base can claim to be a fan of this sport an exhibit such blatant ignorance about said sports....... and I know there's a lot of immaturity among the base as well...I get that...but...Phew...sigh....

The REAL problem is the available coaching pool is full of 8/9 win per year guys. Hiring another 8/9 wpy guy makes no sense. If Bama threw the bank at Saban perhaps we throw the bank at Swinney??

You must be part of the instant gratification generation. Sorry, but you will never be happy. I pity you.

Valid criticism after 4 years of under-performing and you are talking about instant gratification? Lucky you since you will apparently always be happy/supportive no matter how badly Butch sucks (and loses to Vandy and SCjr proved it).
