How Soon and Who?

So Just how soon do we expect to start hearing some moves? Before the upcoming recruiting rounds or wait til AD in Feb?

Seems Consensus is -

DB Coach? Only name I've read has been Fair? Or Should Shoop get to pick?
Co-OC? Helfrich? DeBord O-Line?
Longshot D-Line? Hoke?

S&C Coach is a must, and now LA Coach seems to be "more affordably available".

My hope is that it happens ASAP. My further hopes are that Shoop gets to hire whoever he damn well pleases, that Mahoney and Debord are either reassigned or retire, that Azzani gets reassigned, and that we get the best S&C coach money can buy.

My daily hope is that Butch is on the phone every day to Fulmer and to Majors about how to be a HC at Tennessee...and that they are giving him an earful.

It seems like most are in agreement that Shoop needs to stay, especially after seeing the defensive game plan come together against Nebraska.

One thing I noticed on defense is that DB dropped into zone coverage on several plays in that game. When he did, good things happened. How much of that is because of how freakish of an athlete DB is, or a sign of things to come?

I personally love when lineman drop into a zone coverage on passing plays. I think it confuses the crap out of most college qbs, results in turnovers, and can blow up screen plays before they are even started.

For what he does in the pros? Barnett stays healthy, and he will be fun to watch.

I am not a fan of linemen in zone coverage. I am for linebackers doing that, because tackles and ends need to be in the QBs face. And when a DE misses, that is always a big gain for the bad guys. And our CBs haven't been that great at minimizing those gains.

I am not saying never to do it, but I wouldn't make it a habit. Much depends on the talent of the player. But it seems more high risk than high reward.

No. For what Shoop has in store for the future.

I agree I think you have to have the athletes to do it. Both physically and mentally. I wonder if DB had the option to rush, or if he recognized pass, he could sit back in zone on some of those plays. Even when he was in zone, pressure was still getting to the qb through the design bc I think Shoop would send extra pressure and drop DB on occasion

Once the dead period is over, he won't be talking to those two. If I had it my way, Neyland would haunt his dreams.

But I doubt the number of changes you are calling for will happen. S&C for sure, but the rest you could get 2 maximum of 3. Recruiting is a relationship process, and there is only 30 days until NSD. Little time to replace and refill a class with the number of decommits you would have.

Had we missed the bowl games, there would be time to replace coaches like Derek Dooley did. But though I agree that some might need replacing, this isn't 2011.

Why would he want to talk to two coaches that UT fired? :)

It might have been better with JRM, Sutton, and Kirkland had been healthy. But while Sutton was out, the other DBs just were not effective at covering in case Barnett missed. 5 of them and none in position to help? Seems we got gashed on it at times, hard to remember right now.

Occasional? Yeah, if you got all your horses running and your ducks in a row pulling trucks. Me? I want the backers doing that. What God made them for. Just less risky for me on most downs against most teams.

S&C: ASAP
DB/OL/QB Coach/etc. will depend on if replacement has instant equity with recruits. Otherwise: a few day after National Signing Day.

True, but I doubt HCs can promise the potential hire a salary without approval by the AD.

this is true. Almost lost out on Shoop last year because Hart balked at salary. Butch finally presented Hart a deal he could live with

I would think Hart can sign off on salaries after he calls the board and gets approval. He isn't sitting in his office just to keep a seat warm.

Hart can't do anything.. if anyone needs to do anything it will be Gilbert working with DiPeitro

Disastrous? Really? If other programs are trying to hire your assistants as head coaches it means they've done their job well. How many of Saban's assistants have taken HC positions? It hasn't hurt them at all.

It's good sure but replacing virtually an entire wouldn't be doing any favors for Tennessee

That also implies that the next two years would be very good ones for the Vols. I think you are more afraid that Coach Jones will succeed.

It doesent imply anything. Scott got interviews after this season that didn't meet expectations.

Whatever you say. Main thing is just because they haven't got the long term AD in place yet, the world doesn't stop spinning while they fiddle fart around.

Never under estimate the sheer ineptitude of our Leadership at UT.

We are talking about the people who gave fulmer a five year extension then fire him and hire KIFFIN which then leads to Dooley and now Butch.

Great idea. Let's do that, and trash the 11th ranked class.

I guess if you had influence at Green Bay, McCarthy would be looking for a job, and the Pack would be outta the playoffs.

Been suspecting it for awhile, but now I am certain....you ARE a moron.

I actually love McCarthy because he won a Superbowl. When Butch wins a NC, this comparison might be valid.

Butch and co will just squander that recruiting class just like 2014.

Sounding more and more like this could drag into next month before everything is completed

Isn't a longer delay bad news for Blackburn?

If the process drags out and someone else competent is hired that the big money is willing to work with, that's fine. However, if it's Gilbert, it sounds like someone is trying to maintain the status quo.

no doesn't mean that. Just means they are checking out other candidates. Doesn't mean bad news for him. I think he gets he if its not announced until March

IMO moves need to be made sooner rather than later. Announce your staff changes and get your AD so you can let your current recruits get to know their new coaches. I mean honestly when do we believe all this is going to go down though?

This off season is going to be full of threads, rumors, wish lists and fantasies about who should be hired by our football program. All of them tend to border on ridiculous because 9 win coaches who replaced 5 win coaches don't get fired unless there's some kind of scandal or complete meltdown.

However, I realize that fantasies can be fun. But PLEASE avoid three names: Peyton Manning, Tee Martin and Jim Bob Cooter.

As to Manning, superstar players seldom make great coaches. They tend to expect their players to "get it" the way they got it. They seldom have the patience to teach and coaching requires a different skill set than playing.

Martin, seems to be a good coach but nothing since his graduation indicates any depth of feeling or abiding love for UT. Plus, he has never been a head coach, and offensive coordinator would be a lateral move away from Rodeo Drive. Makes no sense.

Finally, Jim Bob Cooter is on a career path to NFL head coach, probably sooner rather than later. Imagine making Nick Saban money without having to suck up to every high school coach and uncle/daddy/family friend in the nation. Plus the NFL recycles more than Greenpeace members. Dude is probably set for life.

Regardless of my rant, though, these names will continue to be mentioned along with Chucky every time we Vols fans get disgruntled.

It gets to be tiresome after a while.

If it's fantasy why the stipulations? Personally I'd like to Clone the General. So Robert Neyland is my choice. Or shall I say Robert Neyland II? :)

All of college and professional football teams do this and in my opinion, this is becoming the ruination of football. So Dools leaves UT in a dumpster fire and ends up at Dallas as a WR coach probably making $300k a year?!?! R U kidding me? This pattern has got to stop.
