Who y'all got today?

This is who I want to win, not who I think will win:

I am pulling for Western Michigan over Wisconsin, Iowa over UF (duh), USC over PSU and Auburn over Oklahoma (because Mixon and Stoops).

Wow we need to watch games together, I'm exactly the same, and my anti OU reason is the same too

I hate to say it, but if we're going to keep up with GA, Butch needs to kill it in recruiting in 2018. He has to rebuild the wall around the state and keep those top guys in. Kirby may be a mediocre coach but he is killing it in recruiting, probably better than Richt ever did. He is recruiting at a Bama level.

Agree. Our class looks like GA if we keep in state guys. My belief is in state will get easier as we have success. Kids in middle school now see TN as a winning program. Bring in a top OC like Helfrich and better DB coach and we are good to go. Next year we have top OL, DL, DBs all in state. Must get these guys going forward and I think we will.

I think Dobbs is worth a draft pick. Rounds 5-7 wouldn't surprise me. He has the tools, IMO. He doesn't have a Stafford-type arm, but it's plenty good. His accuracy and decision-making is what hurts him (going through progressions). Both issues are workable.

He'd be a great backup to Dak, but I don't think he's accurate enough or smart enough (football wise, obviously, he's made bad decision his whole career and makes decisions too slowly) to ever claim a starting job without multiple injuries in front of him.

Even if we went injury free there we were not SEC champ caliber at that position.

We have got to do better recruiting that position.

Who besides Bama is? We were as deep as anybody besides Bama at DT till we lost 3 solid to borderline great players. What other team besides Bama could absorb that much carnage at DT and still put a functioning unit out there? This season was a weird outlier that showed we couldn't go more than two deep at DT, but nobody else could either.

Yeah, but UGA had highly rated classes those years too.

It's just too easy for them to recruit there AND they've got the newness factor AND their coach has more to sell than Butch had at this point in his tenure. No matter how badly he does, he'll always be able to sell the kids he put in the NFL and the championships he won under Saban at Bama (though it is very debatable whether he deserves much credit for that or not).

I'm not sold on Smart as a coach, but I don't see recruiting falling off for them too badly unless he absolutely, horrendously bombs next season.

If they lose 5 again, I think it falls off big time, especially if UT and UF do well. Unfortunately with those 2 rb coming back, I don't see any way UGA doesn't do better next year.

Agreed. Smart guy that can make some pretty terrible decisions on the field. I don't doubt his durability, but the NFL is a different animal.

Agree. Most teams are subpar at that position losing just two guys.

How in the world do they have 2 games on at the same time today? Why not 12 2 430 730 so we can watch all of them? I'll never understand TV scheduling

Self-proving much? I'm gonna let it go, but what you are saying should be challenged. Yes there was a fall off of trajectory this year to a flat line. Maybe there is a place for harping but Butch will be back. He is a representative of the team and he has not failed miserably. Part of succeeding in this college football game is challenging instances of negative perception.

I get it. A foundation has been lain if he falls off next year. I for one am not terribly impressed with the media environment. I sort of wear it as a badge of honor that I don't buy in, but I'm not selling in the Knoxville market.

Edit: And negative speculation is well, cheap.
Well I give you +1 imaginary internet points for not buying in.

But buying in or not isn't really the relevant point. The mere fact that those things have happened and we've seen so much smoke are indicators of fan support that shouldn't just be ignored.

Whether you want to acknowledge it or not, jones is at a bit of a precipice right now. A lot of people who were full on Butch supporters a year ago are now on the fence (or completely off the fence in extreme circumstances) about whether he'll be able to take this program where it needs to go.

A lot of people have moved their opinions of Butch from "I love what he's doing here" to "he deserves a chance to rearrange his staff and show us what he can do next year." And that means something.

I really do think that if the guy was a better fit culturally in Knoxville, had a bit more character and flare to show fans at times, and conducted himself better on the sidelines during games, he'd have less people who have shifted their opinions so much on him.

Those things aren't really important to how well a coach can prepare his teams for games or recruit, but at a school like UT, fan perception matters. Once you lose the fans, it's just a matter of time before you're gone. I don't think Butch has lost the fanbase yet, but his stock has definitely taken a sizeable hit.

I really don't think it's a cultural problem. I think it is just a super frustrated, impatient fan base developing a lynch mob mentality due to unrealized expectations. We don't want legitimate reasons, or flimsy excuses..we just want to win, and stop being the butt of jokes. When you have a Coach who
really pushes the power of positive thinking cliche machine..it is a recipe for disaster. I hope for all our sake that Butch exceeds expectations, but the idiot fringe is pushing the expectations for next season into an almost impossible quest range. IMO they are doing this so they can frame the narrative, and push the Fahr Butch agenda. I don't understand why people can not have their doubts, I surely do, and still be supportive. The lynch mob mentality is purely destructive. I feel like I get criticized harshly by both sides because I am neither uber positive, nor am I fanatically negative. The idiot fringe on both sides get on my last nerve.

You get criticized because you're seemingly unable to ever give a criticism that doesn't involve slinging a childish insult like "idiot fringe" at people you disagree with or even recruits who choose not to come here.

Nah, that school recruits itself. It just has too many highly rated kids who grow up close to the school dreaming of playing there. They can go 50/50 on their top instate prospects and still pull top ten classes nationally. And their biggest in state competitor is an engineering school that runs the triple option on offense.

Not many schools have the luxury that UGA does on the recruiting trail. Their next two classes shouldn't be quite as good as this one, but I don't see them falling out of the top 10 anytime soon in recruiting.

Sure lots of choice is involved. One can be a chiseling fan or one can be a zealous fan. If Jones coached to the media likely he would lose the team fast.

Edit: Ironic that Kiffin was mentioned following your Jones for flare.

A lot of talk about the D line rotation last night-- no mention of Mixon... he's a junior, but didn't know if the suspension meant he was entirely off the team? He had some good disruption and snaps for us this season and will definitely help next season if he is back. Butcher looked pretty beefed up on crutches, who knows, maybe he can contribute along with Mosley if he stays on the D side of the ball. Spring and Summer practice for Mosley could be enough for him to learn how to plug the middle.

1. No way at all of knowing whether that's true or not.

2. Nobody wants him to "coach to the media" (whatever that means). Just for him to act like a human in front of them and to occasionally keep things real instead of defaulting to cliches as a defense mechanism.

Uh, what, I've speculated? Just trying to stay in the conversation.

Honestly at this point I'm not really holding my breath on Butcher or Mosley contributing moving forward.

We probably would have seen something out of Mosley by now if he was going to make an impact somewhere.

Butcher has had all of one healthy semester on campus since he early enrolled. He's never really played inside and hasn't been healthy enough to even practice consistently.

very important to beat fl and uga next year if we want to have any chance to have a good recruiting year. lose to both those teams then we are 3rd at best in the east until a new coach is hired imo. Butch can do it, just needs team and staff to make positive progress this offseason. A new strength coach should help tremendously. imagine what this team woud have done this year with a disciplined strength coach to keep their asses in check over the summer.
