Agreed, and I wouldn't expect the UT administration to make that splash hire either. It would be another case of us searching through mid level coaching ranks.

Yep. I agree they would be unlikely to do a splash hire

And personally I'm not sure the next mid level coach we would hire would be an upgrade. Honestly Savannah is the only current SEC coach I would say is an obvious upgrade over CBJ

A few thoughts...

Josh Malone will absolutely have the chance to go in rounds 2-4. Talk of him being in the last couple of rounds or an UDFA is moranic. There is more tape on him than many WRs, including DGB who went in the second round. Malone is a much better WR than DGB, and although he isn't the physical freak DGB is, his measurables are very good for the NFL game. Staying be next year would be high-risk, high reward, and I hope he does.

I hate to say things like this because of recency bias and hyperbole, but I truly believe Derek Barnett is the best UT player since Peyton. I hope he goes to get paid, because he has nothing left to prove.

S&C is the key to the offseason, as well as getting a QB coach. I don't really think Debord is a problem at all. I think talk of getting Shoop his own coaches is overblown. There are a few position coaching spots that need to be upgraded, and I think they need to be elite recruiters above all else to stop the bleeding there, more so than having any connection to Shoop.

The offensive line and Kelly will be the reason for optimism next season. A lot is made of AK being a better fit than Hurd; I think Kelly is a better fit than any back Butch has had. If he stays healthy, he will be in the All SEC conversation.

I find it ironic that a lot of those who denigrate those who question Butch are predicting 0-2 losses next year. Setting those expectations with such a big talent drain is doing him no favors. Realistically I expect an 8-4 record, and not to see JG until a couple of losses occur. More importantly, 2017 needs to be a reset for recruiting. The talent level and depth of the team as a whole is not where it needs to be to make any noise if the 2017 class doesn't have a complete turnaround, if the 2016 class doesn't have more difference makers than we think, and after all the attrition from the previous classes.

If we finish 8-4, we will see Butch in 2018 because you can't pay 8 million dollars to fire an 8-4 coach.

Next year with our oline and Kelly, CFA, and Chandler we should be able to control games. With new QB, deep game should open up. Good run game could and should help defense next year.

I don't believe in absolutes.

Nonetheless, I don't see how you can fire him at 8-4 when that is probably around the expectation. What if he goes 9-3 and doesn't win the east? Basically the same.

Agree on absolutes but imo it's hard to imagine a scenario where he's 8-4 and loses the east and we retain him.

He burned up his equity in 2015 (OU, UF) and 2016 (SC, VU). He is being given 2016 to get it done. This will be his first team with 100% his players and the senior class is the 2014 class.

I want to preface, this isn't me being negative.

But I just can't see how on earth we can expect to be better next year

I think 2017 is a clear rebuilding year.

may not get fired at 8-4, but recruiting will stall again and we will have another weak class... 2-3 of those in a row and we are back to Dooley ball against other teams in the SEC....

I think 2017 is a clear rebuilding year.

2016 10-2 does not equal 2017 10-2

2016 schedule was setup with a brutal stretch of games and injuries mounted because of that stretch and lack of luck.

2017 is more spread out and manageable.

Offensive line will determine whether we are better or not. We should be able to control games with our run game. I was disappointed yesterday that we did not even attempt to run between the tackles. Kelly should have a big year.

If the D can be what a norm CBS D has been. We don't have massive injuries. I could see it

Also don't see any great teams in the east next year and ha tech isn't a hard OOC matchup

We have a lot returning. East is still not strong. It is there for the taking.

We have a lot leaving too.

The things people are counting on are complete unknowns IMO

I understand optimism, but I think people are letting optimism cloud judgement and analysis.

Saying things like JG or QD will come in and be good are complete conjecture. Nobody knows.

We don't know what our staff will look like

Etc..

Theoretically, that should have happened THIS year.

No, our line started the year with too many injuries and very little depth. Hall and Thomas both hurt to start season. Dooley's failure to sign a single olineman in his last year (we should have had at least 2 5th year senior olinemen this year) and our staff's misses with Blair, Raulerson, etc gave us no depth for this year.
2017 should be a very good year for oline. We have the most depth that we have had in about 12 years.

Dooley never got the type of players that Butch has gotten in "down" years. Trey Smith and Ty Chandler are dynamic players that Dooley couldn't get after year one. I will also continue to say that this staff can evaluate talent.
