Recruiting Forum Football Talk XXXI

I'm just going on record, I don't care for this new trend of random threads being started in the RF. I really like the organization of all player info in their threads and then all other football and occasional coffee, dog fart, moran talk in the football talk thread.

Why are we straying away from what's worked for so long?

A few thoughts...

Josh Malone will absolutely have the chance to go in rounds 2-4. Talk of him being in the last couple of rounds or an UDFA is moranic. There is more tape on him than many WRs, including DGB who went in the second round. Malone is a much better WR than DGB, and although he isn't the physical freak DGB is, his measurables are very good for the NFL game. Staying be next year would be high-risk, high reward, and I hope he does.

I hate to say things like this because of recency bias and hyperbole, but I truly believe Derek Barnett is the best UT player since Peyton. I hope he goes to get paid, because he has nothing left to prove.

S&C is the key to the offseason, as well as getting a QB coach. I don't really think Debord is a problem at all. I think talk of getting Shoop his own coaches is overblown. There are a few position coaching spots that need to be upgraded, and I think they need to be elite recruiters above all else to stop the bleeding there, more so than having any connection to Shoop.

The offensive line and Kelly will be the reason for optimism next season. A lot is made of AK being a better fit than Hurd; I think Kelly is a better fit than any back Butch has had. If he stays healthy, he will be in the All SEC conversation.

I find it ironic that a lot of those who denigrate those who question Butch are predicting 0-2 losses next year. Setting those expectations with such a big talent drain is doing him no favors. Realistically I expect an 8-4 record, and not to see JG until a couple of losses occur. More importantly, 2017 needs to be a reset for recruiting. The talent level and depth of the team as a whole is not where it needs to be to make any noise if the 2017 class doesn't have a complete turnaround, if the 2016 class doesn't have more difference makers than we think, and after all the attrition from the previous classes.

If we finish 8-4, we will see Butch in 2018 because you can't pay 8 million dollars to fire an 8-4 coach.

This, man. To me, as an average fan, the need for Byrd at corner seems far greater than the need for him at WR even if Malone goes pro.

It is. A lock down corner for 50+ snaps a game or a good, not great, receiver with 6-8 targets/runs a game. No brainer.

I don't know if 8-4 gets Butch fired, 7-5 maybe.

Georgia Tech
Florida
Georgia
South Carolina
Alabama
LSU

All we be tough games.

Losing to south Carolina again and getting skull.drug by bama on top of those other four losses won't be good

Coaching Tenure of most big time SEC coaches, your 5th year should be up there with 9-10 wins. 7 wins in your 5th year I think most big time programs would fire the HC.

5-7
7-6
9-4
9-4

I'll take 8-9 wins today for 2017. Breaking in new QB is going to be rough, and the DT position is very questionable.

I'd say GT, FL, and SC should all be wins. If we can win at least 1 of the other 3, we should be in good shape. But of course that was pretty much what the situation was this year too. And we laid a couple eggs.

I think 8 regular season wins he stays if there is a good win(s) to offset the negatives like beating UF again, not losing to Vandy or UK, or a good win against LSU cancelling some negatives. That type thing along with less coach speak would buy him another season to win the east.

Not to mention that I feel better about Jennings, Smith, Calloway, and Johnson at WR than I do about Buccanon, Moseley, Osborne, and ? at corner.

I think this is wrong

9 wins is historically a good season for UT football. Look back through your history

8-4 would not be a fired type season.

Only way I see that happening is if a CKelly type hire wanted in

You could do a lot worse than CBJ and 8-4. And as a first year AD you don't pay 8 mil to fire a coach that could have 9 wins 3 years in row unless you have a homerun hire already in place

He's not getting paid $4m to be average.

The east is there for the taking in 2015, 2016 and again in 2017. If he doesn't make it to Atlanta and puts up another 8-4 he is outta here.

Disagree with this mindset. Historically, I believe that on a 12 game schedule UT averages 8.19 wins. Alabama averages 8.65 wins. That type of mentality reeks of complacency to me.

Exactly. Those 4 WR's are legitimately SEC good and there will be a couple more emerge. Byrd is not needed on O. He's needed badly on D.

Agreed, and I wouldn't expect the UT administration to make that splash hire either. It would be another case of us searching through mid level coaching ranks.

I don't believe in absolutes.

Nonetheless, I don't see how you can fire him at 8-4 when that is probably around the expectation. What if he goes 9-3 and doesn't win the east? Basically the same.
