Hush YO mouth... we certainly don't need any negative mojo about our D line in any way, shape, or form!

I do agree they are looking pretty good, but our D at full health to start the season should do pretty well against that type of run... any team that doesn't primarily throw, we should handle...
I think we can all agree that even with all the injuries, departures, etc on our D line and LB spot, our biggest glaring weakness is our secondary covering the pass... we are VERY bad at the CB/DB spot and cannot cover our own shadow. If this is not addressed and fixed in the off season, it will continue to be our achilles heel and keep any team on the field on third down and allow them to gobble up the big gains on the long ball.

I'm more worried about the D line because of the secondary issues. As bad as it's been, our pass rush has helped hide it from being worse because of how effective we can be only rushing 4. If we can't get a good pass rush from the DE spots and are forced to blitz more often to get to the QB then we are gonna put a lot more pressure on our secondary to make plays.

Line play can hide a lot of weaknesses, or make them even worse and are the key to having a consistent team that can win games even if they play "off"

If he gets drafted 5th round or worse, there is no guaranteed contract(unless they changed this). If he's not a finished product and gets cut, that's it. Second contract isnt even a conversation. Look at North right now. One more year of tape can get him paid double per year and a guaranteed contract.

I'd just hate to see that happen to him.

Barnett may have only gotten 1 sack yesterday, but he was dominant. He changed the game.

He doesn't have to be North. He can 1000s of others. I hope he kills the combine and pro day and gets drafted earlier if that's his path.

By guaranteed contract, I meant in money. Bonuses and some other line items are guaranteed but you're right about overall contracts

Oregon has been top 10 in yards per game every year since Kelly left until this year, when they were 15th. Defense is what killed them this year, not Helfrich's offense.

One thing that will help us this year is that we don't have any tough back-to-backs. If we experience some growing pains against GT or Florida we have an extra week of practice and another game to work out any issues(or possible change QBs) before we have another tough game. It should help prevent any snowball effect to the season

Agreed. I don't think it's a slam dunk right decision but I don't think it will be a bad one for him.

Agreed, I just didn't include them because by the time we play them we should have any kinks on offense ironed out and we'll know what type of offense we have

Helfrich is hired for OC/QB coach, JG wins the QB job and is surrounded by play makers who are no longer handcuffed at times. Jennings shines as the #1 WR and has more yards, catches and TD's than any WR in the SEC. CMH is able to get the most out of his players and they are explosive on offense, more so than we've ever seen on the hill. The backfield of Kelly, CFA and Chandler is too much for any front 7 to handle. It's incredible to watch. The OL mauls every single DL they face on every single snap. By the start of the 4th Q defenses are so worn down you can see the quit in their eyes, their fans eyes and their coaches eyes.

Defensively Strip stays on in admin role, Hoke takes his DL position, Fair takes the CB job and Shoop's boys take a giant step forward with a fully healthy roster. Guys like Taylor, Phillips and Kongbo come alive in the absence of Barnett, Vereen and Lewis. McKenzie and Tuttle are back at 100% and DOMINATE the middle. TKjr, Gaulden, DK and McDowell are bigger, stronger and faster. T Fair gets his CB's playing out of their minds, it's a thing of beauty.

Most importantly Butch hires an NFL veteran S&C coach who makes all the difference in the world, the team is in better football shape than any other roster in the conference. No significant injuries except to our opponents bodies and minds.

Butch is given an extension and a healthy raise, the '18 recruiting class closes with a bang, six 5 stars and at #1 in the nation on all 4 recruiting sites and the '19 class already has a handful of elite players on board.

I don't think offense was the problem so much. According to NCAA.com, They finished 16th nationally in total offense despite losing a generational player at QB. They scored less than 30 in only 3 games this year, while giving up 70 in one of those games. Defensively, they finished in the bottom half or worse nationally. The argument could be made that Hoke, whom I believe was a first time DC, was Helfrich's Sunseri. That said, I would be pleased to have Hoke on staff as DL coach, especially if we are still able to keep Stripling around in some capacity.

An optimistic 9-3 if we stay healthy. I think previous recruiting classes and depth pay off next year. Guarantano comes in and balls out. Bituli becomes a star at LB. Kongbo, Taylor, and Phillips match the production of Barnett and Vereen. Kelly does what Kelly does. Evan Berry plays a bigger part on the offense, possibly out of the backfield. Our wr corp surprises people with its production.

During Helfrich's four seasons as Oregon's offensive coordinator the offense produced tremendous success,ranked highly nationally in several offensive categories and became well known for their extremely fast-paced offense built around speed. Although Chip Kelly called the plays on offense, Helfrich still played an integral role in Oregon's system.He had a large amount of involvement in the game planning, scripting, and coaching on a weekly basis while having a high amount of input in what plays are called and why they are called.

This, man. To me, as an average fan, the need for Byrd at corner seems far greater than the need for him at WR even if Malone goes pro.
