What are our insiders hearing?

Until UT hires an AD, all of this is irrelevant. If UT hires an AD that believes CBJ can get it done then maybe he is willing to offer a multi year contract to a guy like Helfrich, but if UT hires someone who does not believe CBJ can get it done he or she isn't going to be very open to hiring a big name OC with a big price tag just to have to buy him out next year.

Do you think Debord could retire as rumored? Do you think it's a possibility that Helfrich would be a Co-OC/QB coach?

It's possible but I am not sure that an ex-head coach would want to be a Co-OC but you never know. I guess if he wanted the job bad enough but that all would depend upon how much UT is willing to pay imho

I can't tell you specifically one way or the other but I can tell you that Debord signed an extension very recently so unless the AD is willing to pay the buyout for a guy that had a pretty good year and replace him with another guy that could possibly be worse is just not how the UT AD has worked based on history. If Helfrich were to come here, you can all but guarantee that he would want a multi-year contract and I am not sure that UT would be interested in granting that at this time. You would have to assume that Shoop has a pretty decent buyout if he were to be fired. Logically and financially UT is not in a good position to do a ton of house cleaning at the coordinator and head coach level at this time. Maybe Debord would be willing to step down or retire? Maybe Helfrich wouldn't demand a multi-year contract? Maybe Shoop would be willing to negotiate a smaller buyout or leave on his own? It's possible but not likely imho.

MAYBE DeBord moves OVER to Co-OC running game coordinator/OL coach and Helfrich steps in as Co-OC passing game coordinator/QBs coach? DeBord still has input in the design and implementation of gameplanning and Helfrich calls the plays. Both to each's strengths and solves a few position coach quandaries.

Shoops buyout if he's fired is what's remaining on his 3yr contract, but that would be offset by any money he makes in a new job.

Maybe? But the chances of that happening are pretty remote imo but I would love to be surprised

That's closer. Maybe I'm wording it poorly.

UT not being good, doesn't make Nebraska a better football team. In a general sense. "They are who we thought they were"

I know you are replying to someone else, but I got what you were saying when you replayed to me.

Let me ask you this, do you think Nebraska is better than Vandy? And I dont mean all the bs we use to determine which team is better, I mean, if Nebraska were playing Vandy, who would win?

I think its Nebraska, which leads me to my fear for the bowl game. When Vandy beat us they didnt trick us and barely won. They straight up executed plays and out toughed us. Had Vandy tackled in the first half we lose by 25-30. Nebraska is known to be a hard nosed team, and I think they roll Tennessee. I could be wrong, based on the past performance of UT in last few bowls. But this one feels different. Not judging the character of any players, but I think Barnett and Kamara will not go full steam because of their shifting focus on the nfl. Dobbs will still do Dobbs things. But our D is not only not good, but they are extremely weak.

I don't know what our chances are at ANYTHING right now. This time last year, if someone had predicted Shoop would be our DC they would have been laughed off the board...with a huge consensus of NEVER HAPPEN. :w00t:

Nebraska is probably the better team. Mason has Vandy plying pretty well but I'd prolly go with Nebraska in a close one.

That doesn't make Nebraska good and I'm not sure my opinion changes too much with the bowl game. Neither team has proven to be good.

Huge difference between an NFL OC and a college OC, it's a much different game these days. Very few teams run a pro-style offense in college.

Probably but Debord isn't in jeopardy of losing his job like Jancek was and there were other factors at play with Jancek. Jancek had some personal issues that needed to be addressed.

agreed. i think if i'm nebraska though, i look at it and say we are a more complete team....their offense isn't as good as ours, their defense can't be but better, and they don't tend to make as many mistakes as we do with turnovers and penalties.

when Nebraska got beat, they got beat because they weren't good enough to compete. when we got beat, we generally helped the other team's cause. save Bama.

which is why im having a hard time deciding what i think will happen. if we show up and it's the same old same old, i can see Nebraska winning. if we show up having cleaned up a lot of the mental errors in regards to penalties and turnovers, i can see us walking away from them in the 2nd half.

CBJ has already said he isn't firing DeBord. So if CBJ brings in a top OC to act as co-OC, UT will be paying three coordinator salaries, which would be around $3M or more. Even if DeBord assumes Mahoney's role, we'll need to bankroll a hefty salary for a respected S&C coach and a few more staff upgrades. We're going to have one of the highest paid coaching staffs in the country.

Pretty much where I am.

That would be correct and I just don't see that happening imo nor has that ever been UT's style.

Yes but all kinds of factors are all over the place currently. :scare: Vegas wouldn't touch this place.

LSU just forked out 2 mil to KEEP their DC...and they haven't hired their OC yet. We got a ways to catch up.
