Bye bye Butch - Purdue bound (message board rumor)

Interesting how this story keeps its legs. Not saying true one way or the other but reputable national sources reporting it puts another "brick" in the wall.

From what I gather, (hearing him actual say it) it was more stating what had happened and not that it was ongoing.

I ve heard it from enough people to not need his stamp on it either way.

Do I believe Purdue wants him? Maybe. He spurned four years ago, but now that IU is going to be searching for a coach...definitely, maybe. However, I can't believe his ego would let him take the Purdue job...just his agent angling for a raise. Which is dumb since there is no AD to give him one.

He's not at the top of their list.

Dodd said that on Nashville radio this morning.

Edit. I heard the comment. He didn't imply that they were still going on.

Yep. Heard the same thing.

I'm fully convinced that Butch has been engaged in conversations with Purdue. To what extent and are they still going on? Who knows?

Yeah, he just reiterated what many have already heard.

Purdue is looking elsewhere right now.

People may be disapointed in CBJ but think about if he leaves and we hire another Butch Jones type. We could lose a lot of good players and be in a worse spot. I don't have complete faith in the athletic department to hire the right man.

I don't have full faith in them either, but I'm really damn sure we don't have the right guy right now. We're treading water and it's not looking too good.

Hell if we had a good coach right now just the instate talent would make a great class. However, that's all being exported to other programs.

The athletic department is fixing to be under new management.

Some of the previous ones I would agree with you 100%.

So butch wants an extension and more money YET is looking for another job?

I wish sports writers would write the whole story. This was nothing more than an agent, reaching out to another school (happens quite often), in order to solicit a market to compel UT into giving him an extension or raise.

So you don't think she will go through an official interview process will all the candidates that apply and will just rubber stamp a suggestion? If that is the case, then she wasn't the right hire.

I really don't care who is hired for AD - just want someone who is able to do the job the right way and doesn't let the whims of the fans/boosters drive them to bad decisions.

But I do have a problem if someone rubber stamps a hire when it is their job to interview and hire the best candidate.

I suspect that most chancellors accept the recommendation of their search committees. Probably makes her over all job much easier to take a recommendation of a bunch of people that she is going to be working closely with going forward.

I think he is looking for the latter.

Exactly. Those wheels have been in motion for awhile now with some very prominent people being involved with the process. Some of which have not been as active in previous times.

Im over Butch and his snake oil pitch. I also get that until we have an AD in place, we're (UT higher ups) aren't going to make a change even if they wanted to. But if JAV's info is true and Butch "kicked the tires" at Purdue, only to realize his best opportunity is the one he has and now he's committed more than ever, HOW IN THE WORLD ARE PEOPLE OKAY WITH THIS??? He's looking for another wife while still married because his current beautiful, loving wife expects him to get a job and support his family while the other homely, bland sweater vest wearing, homeroom mom only cares if he has male genitalia. It's not the looking around that bothers me because everyone does it. It's the fact he thinks he's a real catch and we should be so lucky to have him. <rant over>

Pathetic. It's like auctioning off the fat kid in dodgeball. No takers.

CBJ has 10 years experience as a head coach. I think there's enough history on him that everyone knows what they would get.

It's not that he's an awful coach. I wouldn't even say he's a bad coach. If you put all of the D1 coaches in three buckets, I'd say he's somewhere at the top of the middle third or bottom of the top third.

And anyone who knows anything about college football knows that. That's a tough sell for a lot of people. In truth, he may do just fine at Purdue, but I don't think, at this point in his career, he's going to rally the fanbase and sell tickets, which is certainly part of what the Purdue A.D. is looking for. There's just no narrative that can explain the transition from a program like Tennessee to Purdue.

"I was about to get fired so I bailed" or "I didn't have the emotional toughness for the SEC" are not really exciting explanations for a fanbase. There's no way to spin it that works.

Plus, at Tennessee, he's been exposed. There just wouldn't be much stomach for listening to him cycle through his canned rhetoric all over again.
