Fidel Castro Dead at 90

How many Cubans do you actually know D4H?

And not Cuban Americans, but as in born in and lived in Cuba.

Fidel declared racism illegal and then acted like that law fixed the problem. Imprisoned those who spoke out about racial inequality. D4H has zero clue.

None.

But my Uncle knew alot. He went to Cuba in the 1980s. Love it there. And especially loved the people. Interestingly, most people down there thought he was Cuban. They didn't know there were black people in America as well. LOL.

He's a large source of my knowledge and fascination with Cuba and Castro. Black people in Cuba are frustrated to a degree because they haven't seen as much change as they would like. Racism is still a big problem down there. Similar to how we have a huge racism problem here in America. But there ain't a black person down there that would trade the Castro regime for what was around before him.

Before Castro, Cuba was a JIM CROW STATE.

No. I know about that. I've repeatedly said IN THIS THREAD that racism is still a big problem in Cuba. Just like its a big problem here in America even though we passed the Civil Rights Act.

Fidel has his flaws. I never said he was perfect.

However, I will say Cuba is better off today under his rule than it was before him under the racist jim crow type rule of Batista. Black and brown Cubans are better off today under Castro than they were before Castro.

And beyond what he did in Cuba. Castro's support for black freedom movements in Africa will always endear him to black people globally. At a time when no one else in the world gave a damn about the freedom of black people in Africa. Castro and Cuba were willing to risk their own lives to help free people halfway across that globe.

Castro will always have my undying respect as a black man for what he did then. Even if he's faltered as of late.

So you are going on second hand knowledge of a family member?

I know more than a few fresh off the boats Balseros that were attempting to escape in 1994 when Castro opened the gates on those wanting to leave. And guess what?

Black and Hispanic Cubans were fleeing the island. It wasn't about color or racism or living in an equal society. It was about the freedom and opportunity in a dream called AMERICA they were risking their lives for. 30,000 Cubans ended up in Guantanamo Bay over that summer and fall and passed right by where I worked. Funny thing? We never saw any color of people. Just Cubans risking everything for a taste of freedom. And those I worked around, interacted with, provided care for and helped survive didn't see me as a white man or an oppressor. They saw me as a symbol of a nation that would welcome them in and give them a chance to live the lives they wanted. And provide a safe place for their children to grow up and achieve their dreams.

So while you can go off second hand stories and think you know about Cubans. I know for a fact who they are and what they want. And how they were treated equally by Americans during their time of need regardless of the color of their skin, their economic status or what nation they were born in.

I'd suggest you stop while you're well enough behind. But I know you're not smart enough to know when to shut up.

Without a doubt. Its really sad that Americans have been brainwashed to hate Castro and have no knowledge of the history of Cuba BEFORE Fidel Castro.

Do you know that Cuba was ruled by another dictator before Castro?

A dictator that America supported. Its funny how we hate some dictators but have no problem with others. The dictator that preceded Castro was named Batista and he was especially brutal. The biggest reason Castro was able to garner so much support for the Cuban revolution is because of how bad Batista was. He was so corrupt that he let the Mafia have free reign all over the country. This was popularized by Francis Coppola in the Godfather 2.

But beyond being a crook, Batista was also especially racist. Cuban society has always been racist. But this guy was basically Cuba's Woodrow Wilson. In a nation where black and brown people had no power or money, he went out of his way to make life even more difficult for them. Before Fidel Castro, Cuba was basically a Jim Crow type country. After Fidel it became like the US after the civil rights movement. Is life perfect for black and brown Cubans now under the Castro regime? No. Cuba still has a long way to go in terms of racial equality. Just as the US has a long way to go ourselves when it comes to racial equality. However, Cuba is in a much better place today under Castro than it was before under Batista. And that is why black and brown Cubans love and support him so much.

Yes, I know some Cuban history and Batista was a bastard and because of that Castro came to power.

I asked my question about black Cubans because I know some. The owner of a truck manufacture (industrial vacuum) is a black Cuban, as black can get along with his family. They all hated Castro, to listen to them being black in Cuba was no panacea.

You are so full of shat. Exactly how did your "uncle" go to Cuba in the 80's? I'd really like to hear the details of that.

Castro never wanted to free anyone, he wanted to install brutal dictatorships mirroring his own within Africa. His support of revolutionaries was not in the pursuit of freedom.

I'll answer for him since his answer will likely be BS anyway. The way you could go was to travel to Canada first and then on to Cuba during those times. I was stationed with a Cuban girl at my first assignment that did it several times.

She never held a security clearance though. But did go to visit her extended family without reprecussions.

Anyway, it was limited on how you could get there, but you could get there.

While the United States government was supporting RACIST WHITE colonialist regimes in Africa, Fidel Castro and Cuba were supporting the black freedom movements in those countries. There is a reason Cuba was the first country Nelson Mandela visited after he became President of South Africa. There is a reason he called Fidel Castro his brother.

Fidel and Cuba are loved all around Africa for their support of Africans during the struggles against WHITE COLONIALISM. White people in the West have tried to hide this part of history because they were on the wrong side of history and Fidel was on the right side.

Fidel Castro sent Cuban troops to Angola to fight alongside black Africans against white colonial Europeans. Just think about that? Fidel and Cuba were willing to sacrifice their own peoples lives to help free another across the globe.

That is why black people around the world ADORE Fidel Castro.

He is the embodiment of a HERO.

Get some help dude

That's simply your opinion as a non-black person. As a black person, I can find alot that was praiseworthy about Fidel Castro. The most significant being his support for anti-colonial movements in Africa.

While our government in the United States was supporting the RACIST APARTHEID government of South Africa, Fidel was supporting the African National Congress and Nelson Mandela. While our government was the supporting the European Colonialists of Africa, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara were sending Cuban troops to Angola to fight alongside black Africans against their white oppressors.

You can read about Fidel Castro's significance to the fight for freedom of black people in Africa here: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/nov/30/africa-fidel-castro-nelson-mandela-cuba

You may not find something praiseworthy about Fidel. But don't act like your opinion is somehow the absolute truth. There are many reasons for people other than you to praise and love Fidel Castro. The most significant being black people in Africa.

Leftists hold brutal dictators in high esteem. Your comments don't surprise me at all.

He was such a benevolent dictator that he didn't let Cubans leave. It must have been awesome living under the thumb of Castro!!!

Reported for speaking unkindly about the revolutions or its "benevolent" leader? A trip to the firing squad for you sans any due process!

Perhaps one day you'll be forunate enough to live under the rule of just such a benevolent dictator.

Never forget Fidel's MARIEL BOATLIFT in 1980, when he emptied his prisons and provided boats for the Cuban criminals to come to Florida.

D4h, I know dozens of black Cubans that were born in Cuba that would smack your ignorance from your small brain. You have zero clue what you're talking about. Per usual.

You're a damn idiot. I guess if Hitler supported anti colonialism, you'd support him. This is how twisted your logic has become. A murderer and tyrant and that's not opinion.

"President Obama was a no-show at Margaret Thatcher's funeral despite being invited to attend and thus snubbing England's invitation as a representative of the American people. Joe Biden also refused, as did Hillary Clinton. (By the way, former Secretary of State George Schultz went to the funeral). The British took note of the fact that the Obama administration chose not to send a single senior member of the Cabinet. In fact, no actively serving, elected Democrat attended Lady Thatcher's funeral. The Obama Administration did, however, send a formal delegation, of 14, to the funeral of Socialist Dictator Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Do you NOT see a trend? WAKE THE (EXPLETIVE DELETED) UP AMERICA!! "

Disgusting POS leaving office soon, THANK GOD!!

Did you ask them which was better...Cuba under Castro vs when Batista ruled?

If you've followed my posts here in the politics forum, you've heard me rail against the state of black people in modern America. Most of the white posters around here think I hate America so much that they keep asking me why I haven't left.

I said all that to say that even though I am critical of 2016 America, it's still alot better than 1960 America. And I'm thankful for people like Dr. Martin Luther King for the sacrifices he made to make life better for us.

The same is true in Cuba. White supremacy is still rampant down there. And life is still unfair for black folks. However, Cuba under Castro is world's better for black people than Cuba under Batista. That is all I'm saying.

So you're calling Nelson Mandela a "brutal dictator"?

Cause that is one of the leaders he supported while our government was supporting the apartheid government of white South Africa.
