Debord considering to retire (report)

Haven't been very happy with Debord, however, under the Kamara/Kelly combination, we put up enough points to win most games in the SEC and it looked like Debord eventually found a groove in those games. I'm totally mystified by Shoop. I know all about our injuries on D, but we got gashed by Appy State and Ohio when healthy and it only got worse. The young guys got enoug playing time to figure things out. Something is amiss with the scheme and/or coaching. Hell, let's give Dale Jones a shot. He stymied our offense and we shoulda run away with that game on paper.

But think about when the AK/Kelly duo started. They weren't against good teams. Talking Debord here. Against good teams it took on average a half to get going. Unacceptable.

Expect Butch to rest on his laurels that UT hasn't gone to three straight bowls since x year we should be grateful.

I'm growing tired of those too. Save me the BS and tell me Tennessee just isn't very good and neither is he or them.

3 points against Vandy in a half with a Sugar Bowl on the line should have been the referendum on DeBord. Especially that godawful pass to Kamara at the end.

The overall numbers for the season look good but stats can get padded against the Tennessee Techs of the world and we will never really know how many plays Dobbs bailed this team out on with his athleticism.

I still think he retires and opens the seat up to Azzani.

I'd be happy with:
New OC (from outside)
New OL coach (from outside)
QB coach

Not sure what to think of Shoop. Our defense stunk. I'm still not convinced its him. Several reasons - all speculation.
  • Too many defensive plays, on the field too long.
  • Enough bad players that the weaknesses are easily exploited
  • gave up

It did seem that Vandy wanted it more. That's what hurt.

Think I might rather keep an offensive coordinator that put up 36 points per game (25th nationally) and 437 yards per game (51st nationally) ....... rather than keep a defensive coordinator that gave up 29 points per game (73rd nationally) and 460 yards per game (109th nationally).

Yes Shoop had injuries (most of which returned) and they certainly hurt his defense's performance. But Debord has his share as well....pretty much everyone of his OLs were injured all throughout the season, to go along with losing his "workhorse" running back for half the season.

Not saying Debord was great and didn't make some headscratching calls at times. But Shoop was horrific all year long outside of a good second half vs Florida. Unless you want to also count him shutting down that offensive powerhouse App State in the second half as well. lol.

Agree with most if not all of this. Butch's offense is Big12ish but DeBord is not really the problem.

That godawful pass to Kamara is 100% on the Senior QB. That was a checkdown, safety valve route. He should have thrown upfield or run. Guaranteed that was not the primary read on that call....nobody throws to a back, on the short side of the field, behind the sticks, ON FOURTH DOWN.

Actually the people who comment (and at volume) are not a proportional representation of the fans...at all.

I think he's referring to the results of Board Poll posted yesterday not the volume of negative posters. But you can believe what you want about the representation.

Boro, you are absolutely correct. I don't know why I get so frustrated at people who scream at "that play call". There are several others running routes. Dobbs chose not to take a chance and even though he says he went through progressions I belieeve he scanned through awfully fast. Not a smart dump off.

I just don't understand how anybody who thinks they know football believes that it was a designed play to dump off to the tailback in the flat as a primary target.

Any ways...I'm done venting. Well said, Boro.

I gotta think Dobbs liked his chances throwing to Kamara. Vandy wasn't been able to tackle him all night. The inexplicable part is Kamara running out of bounds. 2 playmakers touched the ball on the last play and it didn't work out. Stuff happens.

Short side of the field, double covered, behind the sticks....I believe Kamara never expected to get the ball. My son is a recently done Senior HS QB....the first thing he said was, "Nobody throws that ball".

I've got to ask: hate aside what's some of your opinions on the outcome of nxt year I posted? W and L pretty close? Way off?

Well if you are correct, the stands should be empty. Skyboxes and Club seats desolate. Why should anyone purchase season tickets if that record is what most predict? I mean UMASS. Always is a big draw on the road but those other results.......

Well, I'm at work and didn't want to get into a lengthy post of why in no way is this forum a representation. It's easy to see that there is a divide in regards to CBJ support...especially evident on this forum. But, it's a pretty big assumption to believe the 1,000s on here not posting at all have the same love/hate ratio as those that have come out in mass to vocalize their frustration.

It's similar to street protests and rallies. It's obvious to see the frustration by those attending but you can't pretend to know what those sitting at home are thinking.

This.....Dobbs has been one of the worst QBs I can ever remember as far as being able to read the field. For as smart as he is, the guy simply can't read defenses.

Fair point.

Where in Ky are you located? I see your Reds logo, are you in NKy?

Thank god..long as CZA doesn't get promoted to play calling..This won't be the only change I would bet anything but a real opportunity for Butch to upgrade the OC position and get a guy of this century that can also coach QB's..think not having a true QB Coach can hurt the QB's growth and development. My offseason wish list consists of a new OC,Oline Coach,WR Coach and Secondary Coach..Would love Terry Fair to come back home and coach the secondary. We were better a few yrs ago when he was here and would imagine he is a really good recruiter. Shouldn't be a tough decision for him to leave Colo St and come home.Wonder if Kippy Brown would want to come out of retirement and Coach WR's? Doubt Butch would even consider getting rid of his boy CZA but he absolutely needs to make a great OC,QB,OL and DB coaching hires. We will find out if Butch is willing to make the right coaching upgrades to help pull us out of mediocrity or if he will let his stubbornness be his demise at UT.

Maybe we need to find coordinators who know the kind of football that is played in the SEC. Jones is learning but his learning curve is too slow.Hear Charlie Strong is available, maybe some others as well. We almost made it this year but we cannot continue to have fourth quarter meltdowns...Get some people to make the players tough...I have been going to games for 60 years and never taken this long to get back to real Tennessee football.

Agree...I think Debord has been in a no-win situation with some fans from the moment he was hired. We had the 4th highest scoring offense in the SEC last year, and we were 2nd in scoring this year.

Shoop deserves another year, imo. The comparisons to Sunseri's Defense are understandable. However, Shoop has a proven track record of producing top 25 defenses over his career where it was obvious Sal was way out of his league. I think next year is put up or shut up time. We blew it with meeting our expectations this year, so I see next year as they either exceed expectations (9+ wins) or they are all out the door.

How much of an upgrade do you want? We scored more points in the league outside of Bama. Games without Hurd, plowing into the middle of nothing, should have been enough to show you that the offense is more than capable.

Louisville...between the Reds and Vols it's been rough being a fan for quite some time. Eventually the tide will turn.

I've seen some of your posts about your boy playing ball. We'll have to stay in touch bc I have a 6 year old who hasn't really been enthused about any sports we've signed him up for but constantly talks about wanting to play football.

Do you or have you coached?

JG loves debord. This could get ugly

He also loves Butch and Knoxville. Nothing winning the QB battle won't solve. Will be shocked if he isn't our next starting QB.cant see Debord retiring having any effect on JG. Now if Butch left this year, which I highly doubt then things could get interesting. I can't wait to see all the hype I keep hearing about JG.If everything is true then we finally have a complete QB, which we Haven't had in a long time. Just hope Butch makes the right hire based off bringing in an OC that can be creative and make in game adjustments based off the other teams adjustments and for the love of God please bring in a real QB Coach. One that has a reputation for developing them and getting the most out of them. Hell what QB coach wouldn't want to coach the #1 DT QB coming out of HS last year and 2 other guys that were 4* QB's coming out of HS. And hopefully adding another highly rated QB this class. Crossing my fingers it's the guy committed to Miss St and 2nd choice being Bubba Thompson. Either would be good pick ups. I have a feeling when/if JG is named starting QB that we possibly lose QD. Will be a fun battle to watch this spring.
