Debord considering to retire (report)

Here's the thing ...

Real coaches don't think like NegaVols. Real coaches want to coach great players and want an opportunity to prove themselves. While any potential OC would have concerns that the HC could get fired, most OCs are only working on 1- and 2-year stints anyway.

Right now, we have three great QB prospects on our roster, including the guy that most schools would've taken over Jalen Hurts in 2016. We have loads of talent on the roster. Other than the "hot seat" situation with Butch, this is absolutely a dream situation for a great up-and-coming OC. What's more ... if a young up-and-comer comes here and succeeds (i.e. wins SEC Championship / makes BCS Bowl), then he's almost a shoe-in for a Head Coach job somewhere.

So I would strongly disagree with this assessment that "no one wants to come here." There's some turmoil, sure, but there are very few "safe" jobs in college football right now. The only real question is whether Butch is willing to give a new OC enough control, because the best and brightest are going to want that.

He might give a new oc control on play calling but it will be the same offense. I doubt Jones would hire somebody the runs a different offense

If he's smart he will bring someone in with their own system, that way he can use that excuse for when next year goes bad..

Someone had to draw the short straw
It wasn't going to be Shoop.

Debord is out
Shoop could still bolt
And everyone else too.

Iceberg Iceburg right ahead!

Jones had Debord run his system. Debord's background was in pro style offense but Jones had him run his system. He will probably do same if he hires someone again

Think I might rather keep an offensive coordinator that put up 36 points per game (25th nationally) and 437 yards per game (51st nationally) ....... rather than keep a defensive coordinator that gave up 29 points per game (73rd nationally) and 460 yards per game (109th nationally).

Yes Shoop had injuries (most of which returned) and they certainly hurt his defense's performance. But Debord has his share as well....pretty much everyone of his OLs were injured all throughout the season, to go along with losing his "workhorse" running back for half the season.

Not saying Debord was great and didn't make some headscratching calls at times. But Shoop was horrific all year long outside of a good second half vs Florida. Unless you want to also count him shutting down that offensive powerhouse App State in the second half as well. lol.

That's the issue that I have other than the 2nd half of Florida when was the Defense good?

Personally I think we just need to start all over again. Hire Blackburn and let him hire a proven HC and give him the money to go out and get proven DC's & OC's. It can't be any worse than it is right now and this is coming from a formal big time Butch supporter.

The answer is never. Under Shoop we just go much worse fundamentally everywhere. Couldn't get get off blocks, couldn't tackle, run fits were non existent, never set the edge, couldn't cover anybody in the pass game, couldn't create turnovers.

Hate to see him go...offense definitely wasn't the problem this year. We were 2nd in scoring in the SEC

I pray that the powerbrokers and administration at Tennessee don't screw up hiring the AD.....Blackburn is the slam dunk, no brained choice IMO. I'm concerned he won't be hired.

But if by some miracle they for once make the right call, I agree with you. Get Blackburn in and let him do his job. Unfortunately, I think nothing happens, no housecleaning occurs until after 2017.

2nd place is first loser! :p

You may want to be careful posting factual information here. You are in the middle of a 72+ hour precious snowflake meltdown around here. Nobody is safe.

It's Tennessee we should be used to the we need so and so but get fill in the blank.

We deserve Blackburn but get Byrne

Hopefully the early reports are true and Blackburn is in he's just letting Dave do his curtain call. Then people get gone and the money starts to get spent.
