I don't buy it

I don't buy this at all. For one this defense has looked different from last year and has been more risky imo

So the defense changed, regressed, but the DC had nothing to do with that. It was all butch??

My guess is the D was getting worked, giving up yards in bunches and their starterd to be real tension as CBJ is trying to keep his job and his offense has to score 50 a game to do that. CBS doesn't want his reputation completely ruined so he is looking for another landing spot hoping to have better results and this year be an outlier that everyone will overlook in time.

I remember a lot of talk say 18 months ago that 2017 would be the year. The Bowl win against NW and the preseason hype this year advanced the schedule for many but from the point of view of personnel development the initial analysis probably should still stand. Accelerate the narrative like that and one gets disappointment where before there was expectation. It's a fickle game indeed.

I see what your saying, But I kinda agree. Wanting only Tennessee people is a bit small minded.

The small-minded reference only applied to UT's candidates for AD. Many feel she just didn't want to hire Blackburn. Since she was hired as Chancellor primarily because she is a woman and UT felt it would look good to hire a woman, I find her rationale a bit disingenuous.

Concerning the end of the game management versus Vandy:

We had three timeouts with around two minutes. Most coaches would have had field goal team ready and sent them out immediately and taken the three with such a short fg attempt.
Then it would have been about 1:45 left with 3 timeouts. Then you must choose to onside kick or kick deep and use 3 timeouts on defense.
With our inability to stop Vandy, probably onside kick. Either way at least you still have a chance. As we all know, if you fail to convert on 4th down then game over.

Especially when you burn one of those timeouts before the failed play.

2016 was always the year. Everyone knew we were losing a ton after this season. Could see it even in 2014 when the foundation of team 120 was forming.

Did we not say this last year?

Meh.....I think it was actually earlier this year, like right after the bowl win, but yeah......the point still stands.

If we win the bowl game, we finish with the exact same W/L record as last year. 9-4. To some it may look ok....until you actually look at the difference in those 9-4's.

2015

Oklahoma
Florida
Arkansas
Alabama

2016

Texas A&M
Alabama
South Carolina
Vanderbilt

That's a big difference for the same record....especially when you throw in the close victories to teams we should have dominated.

Which is basically at zero percentage wise. Especially if he didn't do it with this roster.

We literally haven't upset one single team since he's been here besides USCe in 2013.

I think we have been over this, but you aren't going to upset many teams when you are the favorite in all of your games for 2 years except Alabama and at A&M.

Probably wrong to characterize it as a consensus, but at one point I do remember that sentiment being strong. I am not going to argue the point but just am raising it because I have a distinct memory of folks advancing the 2017 timeline. The shock was how close we were last year to our competition that made the play-off. This is when the narrative began to shift for many.

Again not saying you were among this group, but it was a group.

I always thought this year would be our return to relevance and 2017 and beyond we would be a complete team that would be here to stay.

The 2016 roster was always lacking the beef. Butch didn't recruit well at DT until 2015 and our O line has been behind from day 1 of his tenure because of Dools.

I knew in my heart that this season was gonna go bad, as soon as Cam fumbled that punt.

This all day.

In 2015 those losses were extremely close.

Could have won the top two easy and been 10-2.

This year we lost to 3 teams that team would have beat.

This team this year underachieved. It is easy to see.

2016 def was a year where we should have won the East, and yes we are losing some elite players (Barnett, JRM, Sutton, Dobbs, Kamara), but we are only losing 9 scholarship seniors. We will have as many as 21 scholarship seniors next year.

So, while 2016 should have been much better, 2017 should be a really big year. Have to get good QB play, and fix the DL and CB.

The sad thing is people would have complained like hell if Butch would have kicked a field goal no I'm not at 100% Butch supporter but I give him credit for going for it on fourth down because it's f****** Vanderbilt you don't kick field goals against Vanderbilt you f****** score touchdowns

Idiots would have complained if he would have kicked. He needed 11 points take the three and make sure you have time to do the work required. I would not have had as much of a problem if the call had not been for a pass behind the line of scrimmage. Throw for the end zone but at least throw to get to the sticks. Terrible play calling.

How could anyone look at next years roster & think it'll be more complete than what it was this year?

Dobbs, Kamara, Malone, Weisman, JRM, Vereen, Barnett, Sutton...and even though he quit & wasn't used properly, Hurd is a big loss as well.

and that's not counting the inevitable transfers that happen every offseason. next year is almost a given 7-5, 8-4 year.

It has to do with maturity in the trenches.

A year of experience should overcome those key losses.

Malone is huge for next year IMO

My point is we're never going to out coach a team to victory.

Butch always loses the games he's supposed to lose, most of the time wins the games he's supposed to win, but too often loses the games he's supposed to win.
