Down 11 with about 1:40 left and you are in the redzone, it's 4th and 3. You know you need two scores. Butch elected to call timeout, go for the first down and the score.

On the radio today (and I'm sure it's been on the board as well) fans are going off about that being a mismanagement of the game.

To me, it's not. If you feel like you can score quickly there, then you go for it and you go for 2. You've still got to recover the onside kick and get another score. But now you know whether you need a fg to tie or a td to win.

Someone tell me where I'm wrong.

Agree. Also remember that Medley had just clanged his previous attempt, I'm sure Butch wasn't confident in him at that moment.

It's not a black and white call. I did not mind going for it, then. The play call after the timeout was lacking, but they must have seen something, just not sure what it was.

Keep in mind the kicker already doinked one. Not sure what you mean by the gameplan not working out. We had driven all the way down to the red zone. We were moving the ball.

If you feel like you can score quickly there, then you give yourself a better shot at winning in my book.

If you kick the field goal you extend the game and stay alive longer, but you're just kicking the can down the road. You've still got to put together another drive to score a TD after you passed up a chance to get the TD you needed by kicking a chip shot field goal with a minute and a half left.

OK....the game plan stopped working. Basically by going for the field goal, you give yourself the best chance at more coin flip situations. At that point in the game that's all you really have anyway.

I have a whole lot less problem with what he did there (even though I don't agree with it) than I do with what got us to that point. I don't care how well Vandy played, we should have never have lost that game and it definitely should have never come down to even being put in the situation where the HC should even have to make that call.

I agree. I didn't mind the decision as much as that awful call. And Dobbs has to see that 2 guys are waiting on Kamara right there. You can't just throw it to him anyway because that was the play call. Tuck it and run of no one is open.

Yeah, I try not to pick apart play calls. I understand that a lot goes into them. It's mostly about execution. Giving the ball to AK in space seems like a pretty good way to get 3 yards to me. I don't mind the call.

Bottom line is when fans gripe about calls it comes down to "did it work or not" and if it works then you don't hear squat and if it doesn't then they b!+c# and moan. If we had thrown an 8 yard incomplete pass to a WR or a TE then fans would have griped.

I want one of two players making a play for me right there. Josh Dobbs on a keeper or get it to AK and let him try to get the yards.

Yes, but Medley missing on the previous attempt at that point doesn't matter. Chances are that he is going to have to attempt another one to win the game anyway.

Let's be real and admit that game was lost because of an all time pathetic defensive performance. 34 points should be more than enough to beat Vandy.

What's been the common denominator between last season's defensive failures and this season's? The secondary? I guess it is hard to stop the run when you only have DEs up the middle.

Thanks to all for the civil conversation in here. Shows that even while disagreeing, it can be done with class and a bit of humor. :hi:

I think I want Bob Shoop fired.

Damn as hard as I have been on him I don't want him fired. His resume is too deep to me fired. Deserves another year or as I said after the Mizzu game, 4 games next year.
If it isn't better by then can him midseason

Coordinator firings on the cusp of a make or break season always go so well. Maybe we can find one who wants to immediately switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4.
