Down 11 with about 1:40 left and you are in the redzone, it's 4th and 3. You know you need two scores. Butch elected to call timeout, go for the first down and the score.

On the radio today (and I'm sure it's been on the board as well) fans are going off about that being a mismanagement of the game.

To me, it's not. If you feel like you can score quickly there, then you go for it and you go for 2. You've still got to recover the onside kick and get another score. But now you know whether you need a fg to tie or a td to win.

Someone tell me where I'm wrong.

I'd imagine it's because by kicking there you are still in it. Tough to recover the onside kick if you never get to do it.

Kick a fg, go for onside, if you dont get it you still have 3 timeouts and can get ball back. By calling timeout you pigeon hole yourself to need the onside kick for any chance. Its just simply being game and time aware.

Anything more than 4th and 3 you kick it for sure but I say it's 50/50 at that distance

I agree that the real sin is wasting the time out. Once you get into FG range you have the FG unit ready to run out and kick. The ability to stop the clock an extra time is worth the 15 or so seconds there. Instead, you blow a TO and call a dud of a play.

i agreed with it as well, you're pretty close to the endzone, if you succeed then u only need to get into fg range with very little time on the clock

Oh if Trey Smith commits then the Vols had 3 Mr Footballs also. Knoxville media has some competition on here.

Sweet, an out of state school that has never made all that much noise in TN has just as many elite prospects committed as the home state school.

Screw the Vandy game, I'd rather have THAT win.

Amen. Why any receiver was not at or beyond first down yardage blows my mind.

Getting the ball in the hands of AK in space is not a dud of a call.

Like Bruin has been saying, we don't need to invent reasons to be pissed.

We were gonna stop them for a 3 and out? No way. We were going for the onside kick there. Time out or not.

Butch made the right call in my book.

Not saying you are wrong (although I do disagree with you), but i'll give it a shot.

You know you need two scores. In this particular instance the game plan hasn't worked out. Thus the reason for 4th and 3. Take the field goal and hope for the best on the on-side kick. If the on-side kick works you get fresh downs and hopefully your plan works next time.

Basically....by not kicking the field goal....he concedes the game right there. We either make the 4th and 3 or you win. Not good game management.

JMO of course.

On 4th and 3 with the game on the absolute line, anything not at the sticks or beyond is a dud of a play. We will just have to agree to disagree on this.

So the brass of the boosters wants to hire a bigger name, instead of someone who is very qualified and bleeds orange, yet we will not go out and hire a bigger name as our head football coach? Makes absolutely zero sense.

Finally caught up in here! I've seen comments both ways on the press conference ordeal after the game. I can understand the logic of saying that he showed up, answered questions, and was under no obligation to wait for other reporters to arrive. However, 2 years ago when we won the game, he showed up later (when all the reporters had time to get to the press room from their press box location which, apparently, takes longer than it does at other stadiums) and there was no issue.

What Jones did Saturday was the move of a coward. I have no respect for him. I gave Dooley the benefit of the doubt far longer than I should have. I feel like I'm completely on the other end of that spectrum now. I'm firmly in the camp hoping that Butch leaves and expects, if Jones is back for 2017, it will delay any chance for Tennessee to return to an elite level by 2-3 years. Next season simply becomes a placeholder, a season in which, at BEST, we can only hope for no further damage...no expectation of the program progressing.

The timeouts still give a bit of a margin of error if you don't recover the onside kick. We all know how unlikely that is.

Keep in mind the kicker already doinked one. Not sure what you mean by the gameplan not working out. We had driven all the way down to the red zone. We were moving the ball.

If you feel like you can score quickly there, then you give yourself a better shot at winning in my book.

If you kick the field goal you extend the game and stay alive longer, but you're just kicking the can down the road. You've still got to put together another drive to score a TD after you passed up a chance to get the TD you needed by kicking a chip shot field goal with a minute and a half left.

He was supposedly bringing his mistress around to team functions while his wife was in substance abuse rehab. Made Butch extremely uncomfortable, as it happened in front of recruits and their families.

I don't think he would have fired Jancek if that hadn't happened.

His son was on the team?... bold move by dad if true.

Either way, you have to get two scores, and you are right--we would know what we needed to do. I thought he did the right thing.

I understand that good teams get upset (Louisville vs. Kentucky for example) My problem with Butch is that all we had to do was beat inferior South Carolina. Then we got another chance and all we had to do was beat Vandy.

Why?
