difference in getting it and not

what are the expectations of your program?

National championships - tom herman

i don't like putting a number on it each season is its own entity - butch jones

s&c philosophy:

"i've never heard a national champion coach say we out finessed the other team. " - herman

"your fired dave, we need to go smaller and faster aka finesse" - butch

😞

One thing I will say is that the university of Wisconsin knows how to hire head coaches.

Or perhaps they are just at a spot where there are the big brother that is set up for 9-10 wins wfert year regardless if they are well coaches or not.

This place would be running their former coach out of town this week if he was our coach.

Gang, this season was a teaser, a mirage. Each game was a tough game except for the FBS game, but even it revealed terrible flaws in the pass defense. This season could have gone much better, or much worse based on a handful of plays. The staff that is employed going forward needs to figure it out and get better regardless of whoever it ends up being, which is highly likely to be Butch next season along with 4-5 new coaches according to LWS. I tend to believe that post and most on here probably do as well.

The O did have really good Total Scoring stats, Second to Bama at 36 points per game against a tough schedule. The team also had a negative TO margin and much higher negative margin on penalties. That was a former strength of the team. The team was also #8 in the SEC in Total Offense at #51 nationally. That meant there were a lot 3 and outs to go with a lot of long fields to cover due to a lack of TO's, more penalties, and a lack of better punt/kick returns due to the loss of Cam and Evan.

Guys left the team mid season, undisciplined with TO's and penalties, undisciplined play on defensive assignments, coaches playing guys in the wrong positions and not developing talented players better - who is responsible for all of that reversal of previous trends? It starts at the top and moves to the weakest link.

My suggestions are Butch (if back) needs to simplify his system and his schemes on both sides of the ball. He needs to make it fun again. It is a game. The players need to enjoy each other's company more as well as the fan base and coaches. Work hard and have fun while remaining disciplined in all aspects of life (VFL). Butch needs to be more forthcoming with information he is legally allowed to release and cut the stupid coach speak. He comes across as monotone plastic man. Finally, the dumb game day decisions need to go away. The whole world knew to kick the FG and try and on-side at the end of the Vandy game. All he did was prove the media right for continuing to trash him.

If he is successful he will have better options for his career. If not, he will be gone after next season IMO.

TOs, penalties, and team turmoil are plenty of reason to suggest jones isn't the guy. We don't need to make stuff up like saying jones wanted to go smaller to make good points about why he won't succeed here.

Come on man jones never said "we need to go smaller"

You are reaching for goodness sakes.

Wish I was reaching. Publicly didn't say why he let Dave go but that was a big difference in philosophy moving forwards. Dave didn't want to do it. Look a the product on the field. We were the weakest team in almost every game. That was never the issue under Lawson. I have no idea why he did this in his critical money year.

Seen a national media guy say before that Wisconsin is basically still Barry Alvarez football program. He runs it from the top and just hires coaches to coach the day to day and games but they use his formula for success. Hindsight but we probably should done something somilar with Fulmer if he was even willing to do that.

After Bielema they hired Anderson and Chryst. Both are studs and I like Bielema as well.

Butch bowed to the fans insisting something was wrong with S&C LAST season. Also listened to leaders on his team calling for the same.

The difference was that Alvarez was in favor of the move and he is a brilliant football mind.

Why isn't shoop recruiting this week? He GON.

Our D line was doing Okay until the injuries-- not great, but good enough. Then our LB situation went south and every game we had different guys in there so there was not chemistry or consistency... the big problem has always been our secondary. It has progressively gotten worse. Teams literally throw at will knowing their WR will be open and will make the catch uncontested. We have 2nd and 3rd yr guys that have not gotten better since joining the team. I always hate to point to one part of a game, but even though we only scored 3 in the second half, how many times during the game was Vandy 3rd and long and simply tossed it up and made the 1st to stay on the field and keep the drive alive, ending in points? You take away just two or three of those 3rd and long passing situations and get off the field and we win. How many times did we get burned on big pass plays this game and this year?
To me that is the biggest point of improvement needed on this defense for next season. We will hopefully have guys back on the D line and LB, so the secondary is all that is left to really fix.

Man we have talked all year about TKJr and McDowell being too heavy and losing speed.

Butch may have said some individuals like KMac needed to "go smaller" but you are just searching for things to ridicule him for by saying he wanted the entire team to go smaller. That's ridiculous.

Lol...Bruin, you always take the opposite side of everything just so you can argue.

It's just sad seeing posters make **** up to make their points.

There are plenty of reasons to say Butch isn't the guy. You don't need to make stuff up to make good points for that.

Shoop might very well be gone. You don't need to make things up like he isn't recruiting this week to suggest he won't be back.

This place is just awful when it comes to spreading untruths. You don't need lies to make points for or against the coaches.

in butch's 1st 3 years the defense continually improved and actually excelled on 3rd down, the special teams were amazing, and the team was very disciplined as far as turnovers and penalties. those areas all suffered this year with a more talented and experienced team. i hope butch upgrades his staff and fixes the things that were strengths until this season. back to the basics.

I don't recall this being a narrative at all last season. In fact, I seem to recall that our strength on the field has been an asset since Butch has been here, up until this year.

I think you whiffed on this one. And if he did "cave" to the fans on a strength coach, that shows a lack of competency for this job that goes beyond not knowing when to kick a field goal.

The injuries last preseason camp were blamed by the Monday morning QB crowd on the S&C staff.

There were reports that the players ask Butch to make a change

I remember it being the intensity of the practices more so than any S&C program that was at issue.

And if it was the players that requested the change, let's not get into the big bad fan base screwing Butch over narrative.

If I remember correctly the whole point was to reduce injuries.

You remember correctly. That's WHY Lawson was let go...along with the team turning on him. Plenty of calls on this board for the very change they're complaining about.

I'm still angry at the loss and even more angry at Admin because they are going to eff up this AD hire just as they have the Chancellor hire. Word is she doesn't want Blackburn and apparently no one else does either- you would think after the disaster this past weekend, steady leadership from a Tennessee man would be welcomed but no we can't have that around here. I wish the Haslams and Anderson's would jump off the bridge in Knoxville take their damn money with them. We need people making decisions that care about the university and still take pride in our athletics.
I am curious to know why you think the Chancellor hire is bad? From all I have read on her it seems like a good hire. Is it because she does not appear to be interested in hiring Blackburn? I thinks its unfair to pass judgement before shes made a hire. There are lots of good AD's out there, till we see who we hire I think its a bit unfair to attack the new Chancellor.

After Gaulden,Sanders and Jackson went down BEFORE the season? This wasn't brought up? Even poked it's head when Maggitt got hurt just standing around. Catbone made it part of his regular schtick and it became a tiresome "narrative". It's funny when revisionist history backtracks on little things like this and Jancek. Everybody and their sister-in-law groused about him being an UGA reject and not a SEC level coordinator...reading lot of backtracking.
sjt is pretty well respected with your crowd. Along with attrition, he argued that S&C was a major problem that needed to be fixed. There were many that followed his lead.

This wasn't a memory I made up...so take that as a "whiff". The players turning on Lawson was brought up in The War Room...I used to have a peek in there.

I think in retrospect it was inevitable that Blackburn would be no sure thing with a new chancellor. Leaders want to make decisions on their deputies. Same logic applies to ADs wanting their own head coaches in place.

Hopefully she's a good one.

Blackburn is the only choice for AD because we need a Tennessee man who actually cares about the program leading the way. And if she is blocking him, as it has been said, she's already a witch in my book because what the hell does she care about Tennessee or football for that matter? She probably only cares about academics. Hell Vanderbilt does that and is better at sports than us- makes me sick. I hate being a Tennessee fan sometimes, it's a miserable existence. I love the team so much it hurts, but we have the stupidest people making decisions and it appears to never change. Firing Fulmer was the worst mistake that could have been made.
