Johnny Majors - first four years:

1977 - 4-7 unranked all year
1978 - 5-5-1 unranked all year
1979 - 7-5 (peaked at #17 in polls before falling out)
1980 - 5-6 unranked all year

Only wins over ranked opponents were auburn 18 and Norte Dame 13 in that stretch.
Only made one bowl game and lost it.

He took over for Bill Battle who, despite being mediocre and not well regarded by the fans, never had a losing season.

Wasn't till the Sugar Vol season in 1985 that he finally broke through in a big way.

Majors would have been crucified long before he had the chance to do that in today's era.

You can't learn too much from a coaches first four years. Just look at where the early successes of chizik, muschamp, malzahn and sumlin has gotten them?

Lived thru all this. It was hard being a Big Orange fan back then. Wish I could like this 100 times.

Please explain why expectations would drop? You're insinuating that they should.

Simple. We are losing a lot of talent- Barnett, Kamara, Sutton, a senior QB that has started a ton of games- and leads the SEC- and these guys are difference makers. For a couple, that's an understatement.

A lot of people like to give passes because of injuries has made our defense look like crap. Ok, fair point, but the defense we've been left with is largely your two deep next year. Sure, some guys will improve, but probably not at the rate necessary to get to an above average defense. Besides, isn't the ability of the staff to develop players in question?

The QB situation should speak for itself. There are no givens how a QB will do in live action, and that's not even taking into account which QB choice the staff will make. We don't even have a QB coach! (I know, Sheridan). I can see a Mark Levine over Jamal Lewis type situation there for the first part of the season.

We will be thin in a few key areas- DT, CB, And RB. Injuries may be harder to overcome next year.

But hey, JG y'all.

I`m old enough to remember getting to the Sugar Bowl was it! I`m also old enough to remember the: Garden State Bowl and Astro Blue Bonnet Bowl. So yes I`m tickled to death after all we`ve been through the last 6-7 years to have a shot at going back to the Sugar Bowl.

ITT there are lots of people complaining about those wanting Butch fired but only one person who had actually said he should be fired.

That's because all the Butchhaters know how stupid it sounds to just admit you want him fired, so you just beat around the bush...Just go ahead and da what you mean and own it...you want him gone, so we can hurry up and get to the next future hated ex coach.

People need to stop talking about us and the Sugar Bowl... we have no business right now going against any of the teams projected-- with our current Defense situation we will get whipped and embarrassed on a huge stage and the media will run wild with it... I would rather go to a lower bowl, have a better chance of winning and finish on a good note like last year, which will help recruiting. The last thing we need is for recruits to see us get that arse whipped....

Racking up wins off the dregs of the schedule has been our program identity for a very long time...

Again, i'm not sure what period of time spoiled everyone here? Was it the brief four year stretch with Manning and then the national title?

Because you take that stretch away, and it mostly looks similar to today.
I'm not gonna entertain some notion that this is what our program is.

Read similar posts last guy.

One of the main reasons UT is able to achieve its $1B annual fundraising goal is the Anderson Family Foundation. Charlie's opinions carry a lot of weight. Millions.

There have been maybe two. You always have a couple. If we were undefeated those couple would be complaining about how we only beat KY by 20.

Some here are indifferent, I'll give you that, but is that an acknowledgement that they want Butch gone? Even though we're 8-3, with a chance at 9-3, here's the reasons why I think some are meh about the season:

Lackadaisical performances out of the gate against teams that should have been pre-season games. Overtime to beat ASU, 4 qtr game against Ohio, slow starts against VT, and FL.

Drama in the locker room with Hurd and PW.

Recruiting (at this point) underwhelming.

Not winning the east in another down year for the east, despite being the most talented teams of Jones' tenure. "If they couldn't do it this year, will they ever?"

Lack of competiveness against Bama.

Defense at close to Sunseri levels to end the season.

Butch's seemingly pettiness bickering back and forth with the fans and media. His endless clichés are wearing thin and his disconnect with the fans seems to be widening.

Vandy being anything but a sure win. Fans are legitimately concerned about Vandy (which they should be).

Because of injuries, we've seen a lot of next year's team audition and fans don't see the next Barnett, JRM and, Cam Sutton.

Now before you roast me, I'm not saying these are legitimate or valid. I realize injuries have played a significant role. You have to have something to sell, either the present or the future. The present, while is by no means bad, is not what was expected, and the future has a lot of question marks.

I have to admit that my confidence in Butch has taken a hit. I'm not sure he's the coach to take us to the next level. I'm by no means giving up on him. I have less confidence the AD would hire anyone any better and very well could be worse.

Im late, but great post
