Seriously, What do y'all want him to say?

"we didn't win the East. The season is lost. We aren't going to play the rest of the schedule. Sell the players, fire the coaches, put down Smokey. All is lost. I'm sorry."

For someone as social media savvy as he supposedly is, he does say some dumb things. I am sure that it important, but he is getting destroyed on Twitter right now, by his own fans. That's something you say if you're 2-10 and on your way out. You don't say it if you blew one game from playing for a championship. Good gravy.

Ya, being an out of state fan is hard enough without butch making it easy for rival fans and radio shows to mock our program.

Honest question to all.

What is your long-term expectation for this program?

I think we'd all consider any non-bowl year to be a catastrophic failure. Many think any year in which we don't win the East is a failure. A few hopped off the train as soon as we were no longer a reasonable threat to make the playoffs. So where is your line?

If we were to reach the LSU level, where we're relevant every year, but perhaps only serious title contenders about 25% of the time... would that ultimately be satisfactory to you? Or are you only content if we get to the dynastic championship-or-bust level like Alabama?

Note that these are examples and context is important with any result. I'm just interested to hear what level of long-term production and consistency would make you all think, "This is a successful program at the University of Tennessee."

National Championship every year or we fahr the coach!

How about, "it's disappointing, I hate it that we lost the division?" Is that so unrealistic to expect? Instead of stupid clichés that make our program a laughing stock to the rest of the nation?

The first thing he said at the presser was that the #1 goal each and every year was to win championships.

I'm sure the folks on here lampooning him didn't actually watch the presser though and are taking what he said out of context.

He's already said multiple times that he's never once mentioned winning championships was a goal of this program.

No I'm busy being bombarded with texts from rival fans about his stupid winning at life quote.

The game of life quote was stupid but once again it is being blown out of proportion. By our media, by our fans and immediately others are taking it and running with it.

One of the first questions he answered today by saying "the goal every year is to win a championship." He said it like 3 different times.

The game of life comment was a generic Mr. Rogers type stupid comment about the senior class. Our fanbase is full of spoiled idiots and they were waiting on something like that. That said, Butch says goofy stuff and needs to do better. He gives too much material. Gotta consider that our fanbase is filled with unrealistic morons ready to pounce on the first thing that isn't music to their ears.

He later indicated in the press conference that "winning championships" to him can also mean winning a bowl championship or winning "individual" championships as players.

Your guess is as good as mine as to what that last part means.

Arkansas and Oklahoma, unfortunately.

Ask the Ark fans how many times they've won the SECC or the SECW.

I agree that Butch makes it easy for other fans to laugh with his cheesy responses but oh well. That's his style. He's still improving our program year by year. That means a championship is coming next year. :good!:

If he got up and said something like: "I hate that we didn't win the East, that was our goal and we blew it. But we had a ton of injuries and we came up just short." You guys would all be losing your minds saying "OMG!! He thinks all he's supposed to do is win the East. he doesn't understand the expectations! He's making excuses! Fire Him!"

He's obviously made a decision that he's not going to publicly express disappointment because he doesn't want to lose the team as he knows we still have a lot to play for. He said as much today: "This team still has a lot to play for." Which we absolutely do. If he were to publicly say that the season didn't meet expectations then he runs the risk of guys checking out thinking that the season is over already. He's doing and saying exactly the right thing in this situation. He's keeping them focused on the only things they can control: Winning the Vandy game.

What would you rather have?: (a) A coach that falls on his sword for not meeting expectations and losing the East title and ends up losing to Vandy because the team has given up or (b) a coach that keeps his team focused even though they are disappointed and whips our instate rival?

That's not exactly what he said. He was talking about being 1-0 and not being able to control what Florida did when he said you didn't hear me mention it.

He could have worded it better but he didn't say that winning championships wasn't a goal of the program.

Fair enough

You quit on the season, cry like a baby on the Internet, fire everyone and start over from scratch.

Listened to Atlanta radio and they think Butch sounds like Mark Richt.

That's fine, I'd rather have him then Kirby Smart.

We also have some awful local media including too many people that were handed media positions when they're under qualified and are glorified amateur podcasters...

The viral overreaction seems a tad dramatic. I'd zoned out by then and didn't give it 2 seconds of thought. Maybe I'm immune after 4 yrs.
