There is a lot of unwarranted Butch blaming going around, but there is one thing I think we can hold him directly responsible for: DT depth.

He knew after last season that we only had 4 capable DTs returning in Vickers, DOB, KMac and Tuttle (Picou is clearly not SEC caliber) and that 2 of them had serious issues (DOB - substance abuse, Tuttle - injury). But he only recruited one DT in last year's class, JUCO Alexis Johnson.

Then, AJ gets suspended indefinitely the second he's on campus and Butch did nothing to try and supplement the roster over the summer with DT depth (even though he took a late DE in McDaniel and RB in Lewis).

Now, not unpredictably, DOB gets in trouble again and we have a couple injuries and we have nothing but Swiss cheese left at the most important position on D in the SEC.

That's on Butch. You can't go into the spring with only 5 capable DTs in year 4, and you absolutely cannot go into the Fall with only 4 capable DTs in year 4.

In fairness to the Butch blaming, he's in year 4 so pretty much everything that happens, good or bad, is on him at this point. He's recruited and developed all these players and hired all the assistants so if any of them screw up he shares some blame. The question is just if 8-3 is good enough with this team, not whether Butch is to blame.

I realized something yesterday that's hard to fathom, if the team closes with a win over Vandy and a bowl win, that would be UT's best winning % in a season since 2004. You'd have to go back to 2001 to find a better winning %.

Then compare that to UGA and LSU who basically fired their coaches for consistently turning in 10 win seasons.

So on the one hand, it's progress, on the other hand it's not good enough for the SEC. All that assumes UT closes with 2 wins, which is far from certain.

KNS:
"Injuries deprived Florida of three of its best defensive players against LSU. Its starting quarterback and center also were out with injuries. But it somehow managed to beat a more talented LSU team on its home field.

When UT coach Butch Jones was asked about the East title that got away, he responded predictably. "We just want to be 1-0 each week," he said.

The Vols celebrate going 1-0. The Gators celebrate going to the SEC championship.
Jones delivers another catchphrase. Florida coach coach Jim McElwain delivers another divisional title."

Without even looking that is John Adams I'm guessing.

D4H is way worse

Bruin's worst quality is that he takes a single talking point and repeats it 1000x.

D4H spews verbal diarrhea in every thread.

He's trolling now. Looking to pick fights. He's on my "scroll right on by" ignore list. I used to defend himself. Thought he had reasonable views. Not any more, he's fell off his rocker.

I went in to the game yesterday expecting Mizzou to put up a lot of yards/points and it made the game much more enjoyable for me. Heck of a final performance in Neyland for Dobbs. He's such a strong runner when he gets moving and that will be missed.

That INT to start the 3rd and then the great slant route by JJ were key.

CBJ wasn't joking when he said we wouldn't win the stat battle. Hope we can find a way to keep putting up big numbers on offense because we'll need it these last 2 games.

Good decision since you might have to discuss that downfield passing game again. I mean you just can't get out of last years misery where we couldn't pass it downfield. Well last night Josh Donbs proved once again he has become an elite thrower of the deep ball.

While have chosen to go super negative, it is fair to question the scheme and the results all the way back to the beginning of the season. It's also fair to find the silver linings and positives from the season to date.

Let's just keep things rational. Should Shoop be fire no, has the defense been less than desirable yes, can he prove himself next year yes.

Agreed I don't think he should be fired but he better have that unit ready to go from the start next year.

The last two games were against the JV squads. I'm not going to get into this with you. You don't have a clue.

Those who watched the game yesterday know that Florida was supremely lucky. Did they make stops at goal line when it counted, sure. LSU botched what was basically an extra point field goal. However Florida still pulled out the win in Baton Rouge.

Bama will be the equalizer. TN enters every season with a half game disadvantage over the rest of east with Bama on schedule.

Lol

All year man. All year Malone, Dobbs, and Jennings have made plays downfield. all year but your are stuck on last years team. It's ok to admit things change.

Lol The RF says

Bob Shoop has done one hell of a job.
We love playing games where we have to score 40 to win.

Anybody that says otherwise is a troll.

No, it's just the fact that you have to say it over and over and over and over and over and over and over… Well, I think everyone gets the point. Just like this morning… The first thing you say when you pop in here is Shoop just gave up another TD. Completely unnecessary! All realistic posters can see what our defense is like right now. We sure do not need you in here continuing to do what you are doing. It's old.

Oh, hey look… Tennessee just scored again.

I finally bruin on ignore list. When a person starts posting things that are obviously said to find someone to argue with isn't productive to me. Its one thing to disagree with someone and one that just wants to keep things stirred up.

We smashed Floridas elite defense and they were healthy. We moved the ball up and down the field against A&M. We had one bad game against the best of our schedule, USCe. Our O gets a pass against Bama due to two freshmen playing at tackle...not a recipe for success against that line.

All offenses have bad games. Peyton Manning lost to Memphis.
