There is a lot of unwarranted Butch blaming going around, but there is one thing I think we can hold him directly responsible for: DT depth.
He knew after last season that we only had 4 capable DTs returning in Vickers, DOB, KMac and Tuttle (Picou is clearly not SEC caliber) and that 2 of them had serious issues (DOB - substance abuse, Tuttle - injury). But he only recruited one DT in last year's class, JUCO Alexis Johnson.
Then, AJ gets suspended indefinitely the second he's on campus and Butch did nothing to try and supplement the roster over the summer with DT depth (even though he took a late DE in McDaniel and RB in Lewis).
Now, not unpredictably, DOB gets in trouble again and we have a couple injuries and we have nothing but Swiss cheese left at the most important position on D in the SEC.
That's on Butch. You can't go into the spring with only 5 capable DTs in year 4, and you absolutely cannot go into the Fall with only 4 capable DTs in year 4.
In fairness to the Butch blaming, he's in year 4 so pretty much everything that happens, good or bad, is on him at this point. He's recruited and developed all these players and hired all the assistants so if any of them screw up he shares some blame. The question is just if 8-3 is good enough with this team, not whether Butch is to blame.
I realized something yesterday that's hard to fathom, if the team closes with a win over Vandy and a bowl win, that would be UT's best winning % in a season since 2004. You'd have to go back to 2001 to find a better winning %.
Then compare that to UGA and LSU who basically fired their coaches for consistently turning in 10 win seasons.
So on the one hand, it's progress, on the other hand it's not good enough for the SEC. All that assumes UT closes with 2 wins, which is far from certain.
