This. All of it.

I want Butch to succeed, I'm sick of the HC turnover every 3-4 years. I'd like nothing more than Butch to build upon this year for the seasons to come and turn this into a perennial top 10 program agaian.

That being said...

This IS AND SHOULD BE a school that can afford to pay the RIGHT HC 6-10 million. There's no argument anyone can provide that will sway my opinion. College football is big business and the payouts are astronomical. This is a top 10 overall program, it's time this administration acts like it...when/if the time comes.

Exactly! :salute:

Year one to two is supposed to be the biggest improvement right? Hope that's the case with Shoop.

What I gather from reading that is Debord is going to be here next year but Shoop gets to bring in his people which is good. Also, we are getting a QB coach with a OC tag I believe he said. Be interesting to see how that works if debord is still here. Was hoping for a new OC/QB to run the O. I am thinking a new O-line coach would be good.
Im really excited about shoop bringing in his guys. I always thought it was really weird that we were forcing him to work with a bunch of jancek's people but I was hoping it would work. Obviously it didn't (injuries didn't help either). I'm also interested in bringing in a new Oline coach

Frustrating to see/hear issues still coming out that should not be happening with an experienced HC with 10 plus years of coaching.

Bringing in an OC that was out of football for years, the Hurd situation, not allowing Shoop to bring in some of his own assistants on D, being so damn stubborn and not playing the best players (Kamara/Kelly and where is Warrior?) All in the past 2 years.

Just mind baffling....maddening to say the least.

It happens to many coaches, even with 10 years experience. Happened to Fulmer. Happened to Cutcliffe, and I am not referring to him possibly coming back to UT as head coach.

You also don't know what restrictions Butch had when he brought Shoop in. Some were surprised Hart even approved it with his salary. Butch was probably told he couldn't spend anymore after that. They would have had to terminate some assistants. I would think hiring Shoop alone is better than no Shoop.

You made some big blanket statements that we know nothing about. Also, most of these things are decisions that many others would make. Coaches don't like players being unpredictable on the field/court and want to trust who they put out there. Happens every day at every major level.

From the post on 247 that BO91 shared: I want to know why TN won't pay a HC $6 million, especially if it's a homerun hire? Are we saying that our program is not on the level of Bama or OSU? With all of the money that the programs are making from the SEC network, we should be able to afford that.

Btw, I'm only curious what others thoughts are...I'm not saying I want a new coach. I want Butch to be very successful here, but if things don't work out or if he chooses at some point to take a shot at the NFL, then I want to know why we won't try to make a big hire.

It's a business decision. They sell out pretty much regardless. No need to spend that extra $2M when your revenue stream is pretty much maxed out.

Raise ticket prices $5 each. That's an extra $3.5 million if we have 7 home games, which we usually do. Extra $3 million with only 6 home games. That more than covers the extra $2 million, and no one really notices the increased ticket price.

I'm not a groupie but there's no question he's an elite coach. I don't think that's debatable. He'll get his title before too long.

I'm not blind, the guy is obviously a good coach. He also obviously has a screw loose. He has not won anything to be called "elite" yet. He won't this year either.

I don't agree that all the revenue streams are maxed out. Bama found them.

That said, I am not sure that you have to pay $6 million. I have always said that we do go cheaper, but you can pay $4 million now for a good coach. There are only about 5 sure thing coaches now, and $6 million probably wouldn't get any of them.

You think Penn State is good? This is the Big 10 dude. Don't let the media hype from one year fool you. These are the same dudes who got smashed last year during bowl season. Especially by SEC teams.

Remember we smashed #13 Northwestern. Alabama smashed #3 Michigan State. Georgia let up in the end but they dominated Penn State last year in the Tax Slayer bowl. And so on.

Only Michigan outplayed an SEC opponent (Florida). And I can't say I was disappointed to see that.

The Big 10 is overrated and will get exposed in bowl season.

Ive watched enough of Penn st this season, to let me know that SC wouldnt smash them like you think. I really dont understand what you have seen this season, to give you the idea that SC would roll through Penn St like their nothing?! You act like Penn st is Div 3 school or something. Gimme a break!!

He would have won quite a few conference titles at Stanford iyam.

Big deal..he would have dominated the Pac 12 while USC was down..so what. He still wouldn't have won a NC. He ain't gonna win one at Michigan either before he implodes. He is a butthole. Saban gets away with it. He is the only one.

I should have said fixed revenue streams, ticket sales, concessions, TV revenue. Sure, if you win championships you can increase your ancillary revenue streams like appearal sales but it's not a for sure thing. Given the risk that it doesn't work out, many feel it's not worth it.

This isn't coming from me but from folks close to the AD.

You'll be saying this a ton in response to the poster you quoted.

He consistently makes terrible predictions, hence the username.

Jim Harbaugh is a great coach and will look awesome coaching the Chicago Bears in a year or two.

That's what you're gonna get by hiring him.
