I would think, if that were to happen, that we would get jumped by every single one of those teams except Wisconsin. But who knows when it comes to these polls.
So looking at this...
In the first week, you could have a couple of top ten teams get knocked off.
Bama could lose to USC. L
Oklahoma could lose to Houston. W
LSU could lose to Wisconsin. W
In a crazy world, FSU could get beat by Ole Miss. L
I'd be perfectly content moving up a few spots after week 1.
Assuming we climb 4 spots in that scenario as Bama, Oklahoma, LSU, and FSU all drop...that puts our highest potential at #5.
So, bottom line: if all those upsets were to happen, and we dominated App State as we should, we'd probably move from #9 to #6 in time for the Battle at Bristol.
- There's no way #20 USC rockets to #5 or better. They'd rise a lot, maybe even above Bama (polls are kinda crazy, so they might not), but not to top 5. More likely some result like they meet in the middle: Bama falls to #9 (or #8) and USC rises to #8 (or #9). So they don't leapfrog us.
- There's no way Group of 5 Houston leaps into the top 5, probably not even the top 10. There's an invisible anti-G5 force field at about the #11 spot in both polls. It's possible for a G5 team to push through it, but it takes several weeks bumping up near it, first.
- And there's no way Wisconsin goes from unranked to top 5.
- On the flip side, real good chance that Ole Miss _does_ jump past us if they beat FSU.
[having said all that, imho no way Bama or LSU lose their games...Okla and FSU, maybe]
We just need to take care of our buisness. Everything else will follow. I was personally glad about the Harbaugh hire. But don't get the instant love fest?
For a G5 team to make it into the top 5 or 10 they have to follow a specific formula. Dominate for a year and look really good in your games. Play a big name, highly ranked team in your bowl and win convincingly. Next year dominate your schedule including highly ranked P5 teams. They have done the first part by dominating FSU in a NY6 bowl. If they beat OU they will jump to 6 or 7
He has won everywhere he's been college and pro. Michigan was 5-7 in 2014. Harbaugh is hired and they go 10-3 capped with a domination of UF that Bama, LSU, and FSU weren't able to match. Also it took a complete fluke play against MSU to stop them from going 11-2. Imagine the hype in 2014 if Butch took us to 10-3 in 2013.

Butch didn't have 2 top 10 recruiting classes on campus waiting for him and a easy big 10 schedule.
Harbaugh was more the beneficiary of Brady Hoke underachieving. Same as McElwain with benefited from Muschamp underachieving.
I see your point. Since he didn't win in the SEC it doesn't count. I am also a fan of removing all the college football teams that don't play in the SEC because their players aren't good and would lose to any SEC team. That is why we beat OU the past 2 years and Oregon in 2013.
Butch didn't have that in 2013, but he did have Vandy and a 4-8 UF that he lost to. A good coach gets his talent to play as a team. Harbaugh has demonstrated that he can do that. Or if you think it's just talent then look at Mack Brown's last couple years of insane talent that played like garbage
