Practice #5 Updates 8.6.16

Part of the problem in past seasons might have been the fact we had too much talent at the WR position. When you have Smith, Malone, VP, North, Pig (before he was dismissed), P-Will and others, it's hard to pick a set line up out of that group. Add in the talent at the TE position we had and you have a situation where it's hard to have a breakaway receiver like other schools. And even harder for a QB to get into a rhythm with all of them.

As much as I like having a lot of talented receivers on the roster, I'd almost prefer having one or two go to play makers in tune with Dobbs with a supporting cast of solid players backing them up.

I think rotating WRs in and out constantly might be part of Butch's offensive philosophy. Seems like he was asked about it last year.

I appreciate the optimism, but that takes a few pairs of orange-tinted glasses.

Many teams have had dominant WRs while having much deeper rosters than we have had over the past few years. Our problem wasn't too much talent. Our problem was lacking healthy, elite, developed talent at WR.

You are 100% correct, there will be no Dormandy on the roster next year

Highly doubt it.

Butch will say it's an open competition going into fall camp. After Jarrett wins the job, Dormady will serve as the backup so we can redshirt CJ Lewis.

Dormady will leave the roster in 2018.

Believe he was making a joke about the name misspelling. Way to pick it up.

Malone really looks to be coming into his 5* ability. A healthy PWilly is just what we all thought he would be. Great news on the QB's as well. With all these things together this should be a good season. Lets keep up the good health and enjoy the ride. Thank you HardKnox. I been looking foward to your post today. Good stuff. :rock2:

Sitting in the media room. Some observations:

-Preston Williams is looking like the 5 star he was coming out of high school. From the passing drills today, he was on point in sideline catches and getting his feet in bounds. Didn't miss a single catch. Malone also looked pretty good out there as well. From what I saw, the only drops came at the hands of the quarterbacks either throwing slightly behind or ahead. Jeff George had an easy over the shoulder TD grab wide open....and dropped it. He's the only one so far that I haven't been too impressed with. Still not sold on him.

-Malone and Sutton went head on in a one on one drill from the 5 yd line to endzone. Sutton had him shutdown in the corner endzone and Malone still managed to hop over him and grab the ball for the score. Both Malone and Williams are just on another level compared to last year.

-From some DL vs OL one on ones, it was pretty much 50/50. Vereen and Richmond keep going at it and each time the other wins. Both groups are playing very tough and are being very competitive, which is really good to see.

-Guarantano had some really nice passes, including a very nice over the shoulder 30 yd pass to Josh Smith. Laid it in perfectly. Then the next time, he overthrew the guy (walk on receiver) but if it was a starter, they would've sped up to catch it. Dobbs looked very sharp on sideline throws. Also had good velocity on some throws which was good to see. JD, JG, and QD had solid reps throwing with good velocity, tough, and tight spirals.

-Overall, from the 4 periods we got, the team looked to be sharp and focused. Gonna be a fun year I think.

Wasn't George the one making all the cool catches during the O&W game earlier this year. I was hoping he would be able to step up and provide a threat for us.

Was hoping we would start seeing some of KMac dominating O-line again.....I know it's still really early but I hope his weight loss hasn't effected him

I'm personally glad our OL aren't getting thrown around like rag dolls.

Just from what I could see on snapchat: One snap of Darrell Taylor against Tatum. His explosiveness is awesome (Taylor), he's so fast off of the ball. Looks like Taylor won the rep. Only other snap I could make out was a one on one of Gaulden and Callaway. Meant to be an offensive drill obviously, but Gaulden stuffed him so bad at the line he didn't even get to his route. Over the megaphone Butch yelled "Looks like this has become a defensive drill" lol Gaulden's hungryyyy. Shy didn't suit up today, was at practice in just his jersey., most likely a rest day today. I'll try to upload some pics.

Interesting comment about Taylor. A lot of people seem to be taking notice of his speed.

I made a comment on him doing drills sometime before Fall camp, that he seemed to be going at a different speed...expected negative comment...wasn't disappointed. :glare: Even doing generic walk through stuff, he's a click ahead. Really corded muscle makes it look effortless. I see him being the real chosen one out of this already impressive bunch after his career is completed.
